      I just found your Channel, watching for the past 2 days I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Thank you for doing this❤ I'm not cooking with Jack but I do just mix stuff together. My little brother is a self-made chef and I pretty much make his brain explodes every time I tell him what I put in something but then he taste it and says it's pretty good which is good coming from him.     What I love about Jack is that he has the super equipment. He has a good cutting board, lots of knives of all kinds, from Santoku to Chef's, he uses good raw materials. But somehow, EVEN WITH ALL THAT, his dishes are horrible to look at.

      I think his ingredients are gross. everything he makes has canned stuff or processed food as ingredients. like he made a different stew and it had a can of soup as an ingredient?? pls no its bizarre. good cooking starts w good quality fresh ingredients, meat, fish, vegetables, herbs, spices. mixing processed food outve cans and heating it up w a kilo of horrible cheese on top isnt cooking.

    In reference to the moment Jack opened the can of pork and beans, you mentioned how dirty the cans are.
    Back in the day, I used to live in the Caribbean and in the tropics, two things are true: it is hotter than a mofo and with tropical heat, there are ugly creep crawlies to match. I had to get my house sprayed every six months to make sure I wasn't overrun with cockroaches. My exterminator had a biology degree and when I tell you the look of absolute elation and joy he had on his face when he would talk about how to get rid of termites would border on "mad scientist" levels, it would be selling it short. He once told me, however, that you should always wash soda cans before opening them because rats would get into warehouses and pantries and would urinate on them. Someone he knew got incredibly sick from the subsequent infection after drinking from a dirty can.
    Didn't need anymore details than that to start washing all my cans and have been doing it ever since.

      That's common knowledge where I live - don't trust cans to be clean, that's a good path to the hospital. I wouldn't worry too much if you'll cook the canned food in question, but those beans went straight to the fridge. Jack barely dodged the ER there.

      Theoretically, you should be washing ALL of your ingredients before use. Rat droppings are literally an FDA allowed thing up to a certain amount, because it is literally impossible to insure that rats and mice aren't present at all stages of packaging. You think the farms that grow the produce/livestock, the trucks shipping them to the packing plant, AND the plants have zero mice? It's pretty much guaranteed that rodents and bugs have gotten access to ALL of your food at some stage of the pipeline, and it is literally impossible to 100% avoid and be certain of it.

Koreans in particular have a tasty dish called budae jjigae (army stew) that incorporates instant noodles, hot dogs, canned beans and Spam, e.g., all ingredients that they could scrounge from American military bases after the Korean War. In fact, you could easily argue that budae jjigae is a true "garbage" stew refined over the years into a popular recipe.

    I've used a slap chop before. They do actually work. The problem is you already have to partially chop an onion to even fit it into the slap chop in the first place, and they're a bitch to clean, so it's one of those specialty kitchen tools that honestly just make things more complicated in the end. Just learn how to dice an onion.
    I've worked at restaurants that use special tools for cutting onions, tomatoes, or cutting potatoes for french fries, etc, and those tools are also a giant bitch to clean, but the difference is that it's worth the extra effort to clean when you're making 50 pounds of french fries or slicing 50 pounds of onions. You wouldn't bother with the effort for cooking a meal for one person.

      To be fair, I think the Slap Chop is more for people with dexterity issues who maybe can't handle a knife all that well to be able to successfully dice an onion.

      @@SeanStrife That's a good point, but it's much better to just get a food processor. A cheap one is the same price or cheaper than a slap chop, easier to clean, and it's more versatile and easier to use. And if you shell out for an expensive one you could do whole vegetables and tons of other stuff. Pie dough, hummus, sauces.

      @@joyceneal6169 I think you can get by with relatively amateur knife skills if you have a better sense of flavor profiles and how to cook food to an internal safe temperature. My knife skills basically suck, but I know how to use a good recipe, a thermometer and am willing to wait however long it actually takes for the food to cook properly. I had to stop my mother in law from lifting the lid of my crockpot earlier today because she would have lowered the temperature of my stew and dinner wouldn't have been done in time. She DID wait, and after a few hours, got to see what it was like. Delayed gratification is challenging for some people, especially hungry people. But it's better to be a little hungry than food poisoned and dead 👌😎.

    The guy is making what is also known as a “kitchen sink” stew. For people who are not overly skilled with basic cooking, this is an easy dish. He is also following his recipe as if he was still using his crockpot.

      Number one thing I learned today after making a stew, maybe brown your onions (and garlic) in butter or oil with whatever fat soluble aromatics you're using first. It's just better.

      We have a recipie my grandma started making during the depression...hot dog soup. Hot dogs, potatoes, onions, water and some spices. There.'s a trick to cooking it but it's cheap and actually pretty good if it's made right. Even at today's prices you can make a big pot of it for about 10 bucks. Feed a family of 4 for 2 or three meals.

      Agreed. One of the things I also like about these videos is that we get the perspective from a professional chef who’s worked in both Asian and European style kitchens, so he’s able to add extra info to compare and contrast that from Western cooking.

    Hotdogs in stews can be really good. Armybase stew(Budae Jjigae) with kimchi, teok(rice cake), ramyun, spam, hotdogs and american cheese is amazing.

    The best meal my grandmother use to make was what she called garbage soup and it used leftovers, (Nothing like this mess) but it always tasted the same. She always added stewed tomatoes, celery and some macaroni noodle to it. I was a fussy eater back then and soups were never something I liked except this soup.

    Would love to see a reaction to some of the cooking on Max Miller's Tasting History channel. He attempts recreate historical dishes, sometimes with very bare bones "recipes" using historical sources and art to fill in the gaps. Some standouts I can recall were an ancient Roman recipe for "Parthian chicken," several Victorian era desserts, and many cocktails and drinks as well. Each one is served up with a side of history discussing either the dish itself or the culture that made it.

    Yeah half the Coleslaw and Potato Salads at the market use Miracle whip to mark it Vegetarian/Vegan... The other half use bad quality Mayo.
    Potato Salad, Pasta Salad, Cole Slaw, Broccoli Slaw all easy to make fresh exactly the way you like.
    Have it your way, Spicy and raw like Jack, Or boiled for an hour for Kay's sensitive stomach, in the end you're the only one who has to eat it.

    Mayonnaise in salad can be delicious! One of my absolute favorite salads is Piémontaise, which is basically just potatoes, cubed ham, pickles, hard boiled eggs and tomatoes, mixed with a nice homemade mayo. Works well in a tuna salad also, IMO.
    Would def not put mayo anywhere near canned beans though, that sounds... really fucking nasty.

    In regards to the (literal)garbage stew, with those ingredients, I feel like you could make something that's very Brunswick stew-esque. It'd be absolutely delicious, especially with a piece of freshly made cornbread served alongside it.
    I feel like Jack could be a pretty good cook; it's just a matter of someone getting in the kitchen with him and teaching him some proper techniques.

    I've combined two foods... like beans and roast chicken or pork, or even three things, like a Calzone or Meatlover's pizza if I had the right components...
    Nobody told Jack that one rotten Apple spoils the bunch, better off throwing away some leftovers then mixing them all into an inedible mess and tossing them all out.

    I'm with Brian on premade combined salads. I will not eat or buy prebought salad, you can't save that garbage. Seriously, how can you trust a potato or macaroni salad where one of the first ingredients listed is SUGAR?!!

    10:54 in Polish cuisine, they do have something similar, they don't use hotdogs like soft frankfurters, but they do use kielbasa sausage (which is a lot firmer and meaty) in some some soups and it's actually good.

    I've heard of garbage platters served in some places. I don't know what it traditionally is, but from what I saw, the term garbage is in reference to series of food items on a single plate even if they don't exactly go together. The idea can work, just depends on how people handle the idea.

    I would love a redo attempt to see what you can make. Being able to stretch out scraps on a budget is really helpful and it's good to take a positive 'what can I actually do to make this as good as I can and still use this up' take.

    I feel like "there was so much opportunity here" sums up a lot of Jack's videos pretty well. In terms of ingredients and flavor combinations, a lot of the recipes he uses seem like they're pretty solid on paper. Not all of them of course (I don't know if anything could save his party cheese salad), but plenty of them. And there have been plenty of times where I've used leftovers that I don't think will last much longer to scrape something together, so I definitely don't fault him for that. It's just his method and lack of anything resembling kitchen safety/hygiene that tends to bring his results down.
    Seriously, just because you're using the things you want to get rid of before they go bad doesn't mean you have to make the stew equivalent of prison loaf.

    Yo! Kimchi stew with hot dogs! You rock. I was thinking I was a trash bandit for doing this. First time I had it with hot dogs was from a vendor.
    RIGHT NOW I have leftovers of this that I made sitting in my fridge!
    (BTW, I made a double recipe of Maangchi's kimchi and canned it so I can have kimchi jiggae anytime.) I do prefer it with pork belly, though.

      Hey… At least she made cupcakes that actually seemed safe for consumption. This guy’s food is ALL dangerous.
      Actually on the Kay part, I think I figured her out since I know someone who she reminds me of. I think when people give her recipes they have to be as specific as possible down to minuscule details, because I think she takes the recipe as literal when she reads it. The person I know who we do this for is a friend of my mom’s and she honestly tries and it breaks her heart when she messes up. So we take her recipes and write them in FULL detail with every minuscule step broken down. She has made some phenomenal meals since we began doing that. So I think Kay just needs that, because in the cupcake video the recipe was broken down a lot for her.

    Ok, so the concept is fine.
    I call it "leftovers soup" or "leftovers stew" depending on the consistancy i want.
    Just go through the veggies and various leftovers meals in your fridge to see what you can do. Its a challenge, ot hones your skill of adjusting on the fly, and it saves a ton of money.
    My favorite i made was we had leftover boneless wings and pizza from a few days before, made a mirepoix, red wine to deglaze and reduce with the veggies. Leftover storebought chicken stock, then added in the finely diced wings and pizza. Saved the crusts until close to the end and threw a fee finely chopped pieces in to thinken it. One of the best meals ive ever made, required plenty of dry seasonings and sauces to adjust it properly. But it ended up feeding me for a few days and was virtually free, since most of the leftovers were my room mate's that he forgot about.
    So like i said, the concept is sound, but the execution was horrifying.

    I would be interested in seeing how you could make those same ingredients into something decent. The technique to turn left overs into something good is something we don't often get to see, despite it being an important skill. Some side by side comparisons of your version and his would be interesting.

    You're not being too hard on him. This is a guy that has been making cooking videos for like 10 years and has not learned a single thing about cooking. It's actually kind of amazing. Even the dumbest of people will learn something after that much repetition. I can't imagine where his confidence comes from considering every video comment section is just trashing him. Maybe he doesn't know how to read? Would explain why he can't follow a recipe.

    I can't speak for other regions, but mayonnaise salads are so widespread and popular in Central Europe that we simply call them "salads" (without mentioning mayonnaise). Nowadays, many people try to eat healthier, so they "dilute" the dressing with sour cream or even yoghurt, but still... My English friends once asked me what our traditional Christmas dishes were. When they heard that one of those was "fish with potato salad", they were surprised and impressed, how healthy our cuisine is. Until I explained to them that the fish is deepfried in flour, eggs and breadcrumbs coating and the salad besides boiled potatoes, carrots, peas and pickles contains a megaton of mayonnaise 🤣🤣🤣

    I often use leftover roast in the wintertime, THE NEXT DAY, to make a good rich soup, fresh veggies etc. We also went to Minnesota this summer, so I have wild rice to use this winter in those soups…

    As funny as watching you and Uncle Roger roast this video is, I know there are people who eat some pretty nasty food just because they don’t have a ton of money and don’t know how to combine the ingredients they do have. Would love to see a video about how a chef like you could take these types of ingredients and make something better with them.

      My parents and in laws cook stews like that; throw it all in and boil the hell out of it for a while. My mom is slightly better than my mother in law with some soups and stews, but not by much. They all have money BTW. For them it's more like they genuinely believe soup and stew is just cooked that way. I'm not sure if my grandma cooked stew like that? I'd like to think not but idk. Maybe it's because my mom and mother in law did many stews and soups in a crockpot and they were just "dump and go" kinda meals? I love a good crockpot meal, but my soups and stews in the dutch oven are superior because of the methods I use. If you actually brown your aromatics and spices in fat before adding the soup or stew ingredients and boiling and then simmering, it's way better. More hands on though. I think a lot of people just want a shortcut. And I think probably an InstantPot, especially with the saute function, is the only shortcut 🤷‍♀️.

    My favorite summer salad is a pasta salad with no mayonnaise and as many different salad veggies as I can manage. Tomatoes, bell peppers, scallions, olives, and so on. Also some kind of meat such as cooked chicken, shrimp, or something like that - smoked or canned salmon is also good - and a couple of hard boiled eggs diced. I use olive oil and cider vinegar for a dressing. There are probably more ingredients I’ve forgotten, and I also season it with several herbs, pepper, and garlic. It usually comes out pretty tasty.

    About the Fritzl reference: Josef Fritzl is an austrian guy (the country with the mustache guy, not Australia) who…lets say…alabamaed his daughter while keeping her locked up in the basement of his family home for 24 years, producing some offspring in the process and „adopting“ most of these kids while fabricating a story that the daughter ran away, got into shady circles and regularily dropped off the kids at his and his wifes house.
