He’s a mini cockatoo. That’s all. Moody, stubborn, and generally unpredictable. But also adorable, cute and generally lovable. ❤️Honestly, out of all the birds I’ve had experience with, ‘tiels are my fav of choice.
This is just the reality of having a cockatiel. They can be crazy loving and super spicy. They are stubborn little buggers but worth perseverance. Ozzy is 2 next week and super hormonal with spring. Don't feel like you're failing, they can take a very long time to trust especially if they have been mistreated or clipped. Don't forget they are also mini cockatoos
cockatiels are notorious gaslighters. mine bows his head to say "scritch me" so I give in and love him then he has a hissy fit that I even dared to touch him. like dude you invited me. but when you get that love.. you know it ❤ love these birds!! and all their bipolar traits.
Not getting the love and feeling like I'm not making any progress feels so relatable, but then suddenly when you least expect it they allow you to give them scratches for the first time after months of interactions and suddenly it's all been worth it :)
My cockatiel Eddie goes from loving to (gently) biting every day for 21 years! I don’t know what’s so bad about it. He’s expressing his emotions. Telling us what he likes and doesn’t like. He’s not a robot.
Regarding their shower time, I've learned from my cockatiels that they need time adjusting to spraying. I start by lightly spraying over their head (not directly on them to avoid them feeling pressed) and help them get in the mood. This may take a couple of minutes. When they finally fluff up their feathers then I start spraying them directly. If they don't seem to loosen up I stop and try again another time. Also some cockatiels like to bathe only in a bowl. As for the diet conversion, they didn't touch the seed mix you propose until I started sprouting the seeds. Now they love it and also started to reject the store seed mix! That's a huge win! Don't give up on him he just needs time. Thank you so much for all the helpful tips!
Does Clyde have any interaction with other birds? Cockatiels are very social birds? The new environment and change in food at the same time are to stressful for him. I would let him have his normal seed mix while he is adapting to his new surroundings. Then you could give him a mix of your food and his normal seed mix and adjust from there. I noticed in the video that he was definitely eating his normal seed mix more aggressively than your mix. He seemed very hungry. If he is happy with what he is eating he will adjust to the environment with less stress. Cockatiels will starve themselves if they are unhappy with the food and stressed. At least he is eating some of your mix and not completely ignoring it which tells me that he will convert at some point. He seemed very hungry when eating his normal seed mix. It is going to take time for him to fully convert and get use to his new environment. Cockatiels want to do things on their own terms and timing. They are extremely lovable. His hormones are most likely playing a role in his moodiness. Project Clyde is going to take time, patience, realistic expectations and lots of scritches. He is so adorable. How old is he and how much does he weigh?
Of all the birds you’ve had or trained, Clyde if the toughest. Someone should have told you, cockatiels are TOTALLY different from other birds. They can be stubborn or obstinate in a very different way, than other birds; but are they also very sensitive, as compared to other birds. Maybe stop the training for a week or a while then go back to it. Clyde will come around in his own time❤️
My two parakeets are so lovable don’t get me wrong but sometimes they are so difficult especially when Gus calls Shawn back to the cage after he was enjoying sitting on my arm and on my shoulder (and vice versa). Thank you for showing us the struggles as well as the victory’s.
Same noise my lorikeet makes when I leave the room & he wants me back too (pretty sure my lorikeet previously lived with a cockatiel, cause most of his vocalising is cockatiel sounds). The video specific ones I definitely recognise as being the calling for social interaction from my bird too though, he has a range of cockatiel sounds, but these are the "where are you?" ones
From my experience of my little tiel, an adopted adult male, I say cockatiels generally take more time and observation before they start to trust an individual, the environment, an equipment, a new routine, etc. They are stubborn and sensitive birds even AMONG PARROTS & PARROTLETS so it seems quite natural to fail in early days. However, after you win there trust, you get to see how they can also become forgiving, considerate and SOOO kind (even if random tantrums and anger is also ongoing😂)
I had a difficult lutino cockatiel too when it came to diet. I tried multiple things but what I noticed worked best was the progression of the type of seeds to pellets. I switched him to those balled seeds which I mean aren't the healthiest but better than the cheap seed mix his past owners had him on. Then through that I slowly switched him to Zupreem colored pellets and then eventually got him into organic pellets. However, if I notice he's not eating as much, I throw in a few of those balled seeds again in the organic pellet mix. In the end, it was mainly organic pellets and about 2-3 balled seeds a day. Far better than what he was eating at first. You win some, you lose some. Making him eat vegetables was a pain in the butt but I noticed he liked leafy greens vs hard vegetables so I just went with what I knew he'd eat.
My guy only seeds the tiny seeds and oat groats. Won't eat stick millet or anything else. I keep trying. But he literally refuses. Now he's depressed, non-vocal, non-active.. he steps up.. not afraid of hands.. but the food thing is frustrating!
I have a Parrotlett that I was away from for 2 days. It was back to square one. She bit me. It took awhile for her to "remember" that it's fun hanging out with me. She's ok now but it hurts your feelings for sure.
Omg he is doing exactly what my conure did!!! When I brought him home he was eating a lot of seeds and I learned from you to feed fresh. When I switched his diet thats when he started switching up on me too and biting. He was def mad I was trying to replace his food with healthy. He is so much better now. So happy you post this, helped my understanding.
My budgies do that too. Where they don’t care about their pellets when the pellets are in the food bowl, but they do eat it when I hold it up to them. It’s not that the food bowls are too down low, it’s just that they like the interaction and think that it makes us feel good to see them eat, so they end up overeating from that. Lol
I legitimately loved my Cockateil, but he was extremely difficult. I got him for my 6th birthday, and he lived for 15 years. Beautiful whistles and chirps then would go into a very random type of tantrum. I was a kid and I'm sure didn't know how to bond and care for a bird. I now have a Sun Conure whom is 18 in May 2023 and a Jenday that just turned 1. I would take them any day screaming and occasionally biting over a Cockateil. Something about Cockateils. Just like the video, she mentions the anger they get. In hindsight this is very accurate. His name was Snickers and was a good bird, but the bites and random anger were difficult for 15 years. I will never get another Cockateil. Just my 2 cents. One more thing. Diet conversation was heck for Snickers. I could never get him off of seed mix. I'm sure this contributed to his untimely demise. From what I understand it was fatty liver disease due to the bad diet of seed mix.
I had a cockatiel that wouldn't eat unless the food and water was up as high as he was. The former owner put his food that way. I had gotten new dishes and everything and he just would not go down to the bottom to eat or drink. Cockatiels are so stubborn.
I have some ideas on the training session from my experience from tiel; First, I think the sudden aggression around 3:30 was quite expectable, since my tiel also hates when the fingers other than the “perch” finger moves suddenly under him. I believe it kind of freaks him out. Second, I was thinking if you could actually try some UNNECESSARY BUT FUN training for him. My tiel HATES it when he sees that I am persuading him to endure something uncomfortable. From years of tiel experience, I see that they are very sensitive to societal pressure. So if you repeatedly make him endure something they feel too much pressure. It has been way better with my tiel after I started training fun tricks and games and then link this kind of fun stuff with the desensitization goal.
just adopted a cockatiel that needed to be rehomed yesterday. he’s my first bird in about 4-5 years and he’s pretty scared and grumpy so this video i totally understand. Got him to get a foot on one of my fingers today and that’s huge for him! I have a feeling this is going to take a while lol
Thank you so much for doing more work with cockatiels. Specifically diet conversion. It took me about 4 months to get mine to like fresh veggies but we are still struggling with liking pellets. We are approaching the two year mark and she will still eat around them. She is just now willing to crumble one up if I hand them to her one at a time. I totally understand your frustration. Definitely excited to see more cockatiel content!!
I agree with some of the other comments, is Clyde getting access to natural light? Also, we are getting into spring so hormones might be playing a part in the bites (being territorial of his playstand) which is why you get better results on the scale. Maybe try Zupreem natural pellets? I know they are far from the best but I managed to convert my older female cockatiel from an all seed diet to Zupreem, and then to your organic pellets.
I don't think he gets the "spring" feeling because the day length isn't natural here, it stays the same I believe. And as mentioned, she wants him to eat better seed mix at first. I think the setup he is rn is meant to be the best for correcting his bity behavior at first. Also probably making sure he isn't distracted by other birds. I wonder why they don't try to give him vegies in different shape as well. Maybe he could at least play with it as toys. But it doesn't seem that's what they practice in general with their feeding system. After all, if they success with changing the diet, he will start eating really healthy :3
My green-cheeked conure is exactly like this and I’m really not sure why. He was found on the street with absolutely hacked at wings and he was filthy, that may be part of the reason. He gets all the toys he needs, has a huge cage and I get him the most premium food I can get him plus fruits and veggies which he loves. He’s just always moody and tries to bite us.
omg .. its uncanny how this is my cockatiel.. he goes from asking for scratches to biting me in 5 sec ..... dont know what i do wong but it seems if there is something that makes him uncomfortable, he will bite.... he heeds to feel safe ... safe is the key .. it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to get used to new things,,,then he relaxes ...
I've had my tiel for 3 years. She's a hissy grumpy little bird. She is out of the cage 24/7. She goes in when she wants to. Her cage is right next to my recliner so if I'm napping she naps on a perch right beside my chair. She also loves to check out what I'm eating. But to try to get her to step up I get hissed at and lunged at. 🤷♀️
I love how the internet has collectively decided Cockatiels have their own messed up dialect. A few things strike me as odd. Is Clyde spending the entire day in a office without natural light? And why aren't you offering chunks of vegetables ? Even if he just dismantles them it will still get some nutrients in his system.
maybe even worse, one of my lorikeets sounds EXACTLY like this! I assume he must have lived with cockatiels in one of his past homes, especially given his love of seeing & hearing them on video. It's rather weird though to have a lorikeet that sounds like a cockatiel instead of a lorikeet lol I agree on the light/view & veggies too. My other lorikeet learnt to shred on carrots & for a minute I was worried about her, cause her poo was orange, so clearly she was eating at least some of it while shredding. Neither of mine will touch chopped up veggies, but they devour whole ones on mass! Seem to eat about their body weight in greens when just given the whole veggies. Asian greens are their favourite, I keep little bowls of water in their cage with the greens in them, water keeping their roots fresh till they're finished & they love munching when bored
I’m pretty sure it’s because he won’t eat it, as in he doesn’t recognize it as food right now They had him on pure millet, then she transferred him to her healthy seeds where he ignored it and then only picked out the millet. He now seems to be eating all of the seeds. I’m sure chop and pellets are the next step. 😊
In another video she mentions that he's in the studio because he needed a quiet environment to be in. I doubt he's in this room 24 hours a day with no other interactions. This is just a little snippet of their day.
I'm going through diet conversion with my parakeets as well, and while I've had some success getting them to eat things like the sweet potato balls rolled in seed, the birdie bread, etc, nothing excites them as much as millet. I'm making seed mix from things I buy at the store (oats, quinoa, brown rice, millet, etc), but even then it feels like they're just picking out the millet. And they go nuts for the store-bought seed whenever I bring it out to make sure they're getting enough to eat. It's just going to be a very long process, I think...it sucks to go through, but it's nice to see that even a professional can struggle with this process.
There’s something about holding a bowl up to them that brings out a totally different appetite! It’s like getting breakfast in bed 🤣. That’s my budgie - will help himself to the SFS but only for a short time but will chow down if I hold it up to him on his favorite perch.
He is very unhappy about that rope. He knows that he is more stable on the other stands. That tail is so awful! He gets hurt because his tail is so messed up, poor baby! Maybe put him somewhere he can get around without having to fly, or climb.
Tiels Love to forage for food, and they are usually messy eaters. Mine eat better if I hold a chunk of avicake or other food I want him to eat. They are also very affectionate and need some undivided time with you. They really enjoy music; one of my cockatiels learned Jingle Bells at Christmas all on his own.
Maybe it's because I've only had tiels, but the insistence on stepping up without any beak contact strikes me as odd. I've always just ignored the sassy chomps and eventually they stopped trying to actually bite hard unless they really truly meant it. Or maybe I just got so used to it that it no longer bothered me lol. I guess that kinda came in handy working at a big box pet store having to occasionally handle untamed budgies. Those little beaks pack a punch, and most of my coworkers were scared to get bit. Anyway, we all have our methods and reasons! I hope you have better days with Clyde soon!
Yeah, I got use to mine nibbling around. After the first few months he stopped biting, but always used his beak. He would sit on my shoulder and nibble on my hair or earrings(never touched the ear. I just figured that they are a 'mouthy' bird.
Hi from the UK , proud owner of Galah 🎉called Jasper owned 22 years, seemed happy content, very loving. We also have parrolett they both brighten up the home. What complete feds would you recommend?
Like a toddler throwing a tantrum, this bird knows that you will eventually give in and give him his junk food. I would seriously stick with fresh food mixed with sweet potato and your seed mix for training. He WILL eat. He's not going to let himself starve. The more you give him his old food the more he will resist the transition.
Cockatiels are extremely stubborn. I was never able to convert mine. And millet was always his favorite. He would refuse to eat for days, which is not good.
@@gailwatts4811 I had the same experience. And mine didn't like spray millet, only loose millet. I tried everything in the book to get him to try new food, from sprinkling the seeds on other food, to not feeding him seeds until late in the day. I got him hand-tamed, but never changed his diet.
My Cockatiel seems to really eat when I hand it to him or I'm standing right there. I walk away and he loses interest in his food. After while though I will catch him in his bowl, but he does best if I'm right there. Soon as I walk away he's chirping for me to come back. Also...might try stick some broccoli or parsley with alligator clip near by or hand it to him see if he will eat it. Those two veggies just discovering he really likes. The occasional carrot pieces as well😊
How frustrating it must be. Seems the more effort and thought you put into the training the less interested he seems. One of my Green cheek conure is like it the more I put into it I lose her focus and like she can't be bothered but if we just do it for the sake of it and both in a good mood she respond better as I'm not putting the pressure on myself thinking we got this. I swear they can pick up on our moods better then we can some times
Wow Clyde has really been a testing bird but your hard work & dedication shines through, can see lots of improvement 😍 Was wondering when training Berry was the clicker used or was millet enough motivation for a budgie? My 11yr old son who has autism watches your videos & wants to train our baby budgie & I’m hoping he doesn’t just give up cause it’s not going happen overnight
She has an entire course dedicated to budgies- totally worth the purchase. From what I understand, the clicker marks the exact moment the bird performs the wanted behavior and teaches the bird that a reward is coming. She used one to train Berry and we did the same with our budgie and it worked really well! Budgies are super smart!
Yea I’ve watched most of Birdtricks video’s over the last 8yrs just can’t afford to buy for the extra info I try to pick up as much info from UA-cam!! I love the Zippos Circus TV video of the older man & his budgies performance at what look like a circus from back in the day 😍 It’s amazing the bond he has with them all & how clever & funny they are 🐦
My tiel becomes extremely angry & attacks me if I wear a shirt with a logo on it. It took me a while to realize he was triggered by logo-shirts as it otherwise just seemed like random "bad mood today"
My tiel refuses to eat anything else but millet and sunflower seeds and Nuts, I believe that’s what the breeder weaned her on. I’ve tried to get her to eat healthy foods but she will starve herself smh I’m still trying.
Hahaha… he reminds me of my daughter when she was younger. My daughter did not eat. Then I freaked out. You freak out too because he does not eat. Silly parents. 🦜🐦
I wonder, had the vet checked his fatness by touching and looking on his chest area (the place where you check the bird's fat index)? How do you know his "healthy" weight? Their weight might be more than average because of lipoma, larger than normal liver, all of these things happening in birds with age and not so healthy diet. At home, of course, you are weighting him and trying to keep his healthy weight. But the weight itself is very individual from bird to bird. Sometimes weight going up might be a signal of things going wrong inside their bodies. For example, the bird normally might be smaller and weight less than average, but then the weight goes up and it looks "normal" for the species, but in fact in this particular bird it's the result of tumors growing bigger. I would like to see a video about it! Because I personally with my budgies were always mostly focused on loosing weight because of these reasons.
A project bird where she takes the bird that needs the most ‘help’ from Ronnies for the love of birds (a parrot rescue) and then will get to find a forever home😊
See how he reacts with your budgies he might be lonely he might learn how to go down to the food by watching the budgies they can get depressed by not having other Birds to interact with my two has to be in the same room with me all the time you might need to get him to bond with you first and then start doing any introductions in training and one is by self find a UA-cam channel that produces flock noise companionship is a strong trade with these birds
He’s a mini cockatoo. That’s all. Moody, stubborn, and generally unpredictable. But also adorable, cute and generally lovable. ❤️Honestly, out of all the birds I’ve had experience with, ‘tiels are my fav of choice.
Cockatiels are soooooo stubborn!!! It makes me feel better about my struggles seeing that you experience the same frustration.
Cockatiels are VERY stubborn, but increasingly you manage to gain their trust and affection, they love their people with a fierceness ❤😊
@rocketgirl8823 I disagree Cockatiels...are VERY smart, they're just very selective with following directions
Trueeeeee❤

Sounds like my cat when he says "rub my tummy" but actually *means* "I will maul your hand!"
Exactly the same as mine! They are honestly expressing their feelings which happen to change from second to second 🤣
My neighbour has cockatiels. Like pet, like owner seems to be true in his case then lol. You're describing my human neighbour perfectly!
Trueeee love emmm ❤
Not getting the love and feeling like I'm not making any progress feels so relatable, but then suddenly when you least expect it they allow you to give them scratches for the first time after months of interactions and suddenly it's all been worth it :)
Happy to see progress with Clyde. Hope you can get him converted, heck I know you can!
We all have those days.🙄💜🐦

Sameeee
It will be so rewarding when you crack da Clyde code!!! 😊
Lol you have to remember cockatiels are cockatoos and we all know how that goes for you ❤
I have found they like to eat and drink with you at least all mine have done this .
Why is it always the cockatiels that evil people, for some reason, want to chop off their IMPORTANT, NECESSARY tails?!?! Infuriating!
Bless him!
❤️🐦❤️

I mean cockatiels are genetically similar to cockatoos, so 🤷♀️😂
This series couldn't have come at a better time for me 😅

I love how the entire comment section is unanimously defending Clyde 😂
omg .. its uncanny how this is my cockatiel.. he goes from asking for scratches to biting me in 5 sec ..... dont know what i do wong but it seems if there is something that makes him uncomfortable, he will bite.... he heeds to feel safe ... safe is the key .. it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to get used to new things,,,then he relaxes ...
Have a great day all 😊
I've had my tiel for 3 years. 🤷♀️
He seems like a normal tiel to me lol. They go from loveable little floof to spicy pepper at the drop of a hat...& then back just as quickly lol.
I am wondering exactly these things. Also cockatiels love to sing and dance which I think is also part of their nutrition.
maybe even worse, one of my lorikeets sounds EXACTLY like this! I assume he must have lived with cockatiels in one of his past homes, especially given his love of seeing & hearing them on video. It's rather weird though to have a lorikeet that sounds like a cockatiel instead of a lorikeet lol
I agree on the light/view & veggies too.
Without sunlight, on his own…
I’m pretty sure it’s because he won’t eat it, as in he doesn’t recognize it as food right now
They had him on pure millet, then she transferred him to her healthy seeds where he ignored it and then only picked out the millet. He now seems to be eating all of the seeds. I’m sure chop and pellets are the next step. 😊
In another video she mentions that he's in the studio because he needed a quiet environment to be in. I doubt he's in this room 24 hours a day with no other interactions. This is just a little snippet of their day.
Cockatiels are very sociable and need to interact. I think he is lonely locked in a room by himself and theres not even a window to see outside 😥
He’s so pretty and the end oh my goodness I love it he’s definitely a little character 😂❤🥰
every morning😂😂 when i go to feed my cockatiel, it makes eye contact with me and takes a big dump
Lol cockatiels are so stubborn. I love that about them. Trying to change their diet feels impossible I've tired so much.
Sameeeee
He’s so cute!
There’s something about holding a bowl up to them that brings out a totally different appetite! It’s like getting breakfast in bed 🤣. That’s my budgie - will help himself to the SFS but only for a short time but will chow down if I hold it up to him on his favorite perch.
Something i noticed with my new cockateil is he is sweeter in the arvy.
Please don’t change the intro I love it so much!!!
Also what zodiac is Dave?
Beautiful sharing ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He is very unhappy about that rope. He knows that he is more stable on the other stands. That tail is so awful! He gets hurt because his tail is so messed up, poor baby! Maybe put him somewhere he can get around without having to fly, or climb.
❤❤
Tiels Love to forage for food, and they are usually messy eaters. Mine eat better if I hold a chunk of avicake or other food I want him to eat. They are also very affectionate and need some undivided time with you. They really enjoy music; one of my cockatiels learned Jingle Bells at Christmas all on his own.
Welcome to my world of 2 cockatiels ❤😂
Parakeet beaks are SHARP! Especially the babies. YEOUCH!
I've definitely had an easier time with the ones who have chosen me versus me choosing them. Curious if all birds are as picky as cockatiels?
Hi from the UK , proud owner of Galah 🎉called Jasper owned 22 years, seemed happy content, very loving. We also have parrolett they both brighten up the home. What complete feds would you recommend?
I had 2 like that. I mixed seed mix with roudy. Now they no longer need the seedmix to eat pellets
Try singing and dancing to get him to do things. Make up a fun song for each thing. 🎵 🐦 💃🏼
@@gailwatts4811 I guess I was lucky then that my method converted mine within a week.
@@gailwatts4811 I had the same experience. And mine didn't like spray millet, only loose millet. I tried everything in the book to get him to try new food, from sprinkling the seeds on other food, to not feeding him seeds until late in the day. I got him hand-tamed, but never changed his diet.
You could use your bird feeder with the camera for his food to keep an eye on his eating. :)
They clipped his tail too!! Oh no 🙈 why why?!
ps I think he’d enjoy not being so isolated
You said he likes to play with toys so why do you hang some lettuce or something for him to play with
It’s would be a great start
Cockatiels use their beams to step up a lot so he might not always be going in for a bite 😀😀
Beaks
Wow Clyde has really been a testing bird but your hard work & dedication shines through, can see lots of improvement 😍
Was wondering when training Berry was the clicker used or was millet enough motivation for a budgie?
I think that Jaimie might be part cockatoo
Will the tail feathers ever come back?
They will eventually molt out and grow new ones, yes.
Yes. Once he molts the old ones out he will grow new ones. ❤
@@BirdTricks thank goodness!! I’ve never seen anything like that!
Damn I never even knew people clipped tail feathers. Wtf is wrong with people. Disgusting.
My tiel refuses to eat anything else but millet and sunflower seeds and Nuts, I believe that’s what the breeder weaned her on. I’ve tried to get her to eat healthy foods but she will starve herself smh I’m still trying.
Wait, your brick wall with logo is actually...printed on fabric XD? I thought it was real omg
My Latino have days like that where he is extra spicy. Bitting real bad right from the start of his day and going for blood.
Hahaha… he reminds me of my daughter when she was younger. My daughter did not eat. Then I freaked out. You freak out too because he does not eat. Silly parents. 🦜🐦
Vitamin d??? Are there windows in the studio? Very stumped on ideas. Poor Clyde, please eat healthier.
“Why won’t this woman stop fuckin’ naggin’ me”? -Clyde
He’s lonely..
It's so weird you are getting the hardest time with this species, they are one of the most common parrots and easier to handle
Is Clyde your pet or your client?
A project bird where she takes the bird that needs the most ‘help’ from Ronnies for the love of birds (a parrot rescue) and then will get to find a forever home😊
Hope you get him of his sugary mix. I know how it is to be addicted to sugar😆
Maybe if he had daylight and not be so isolated he might be more happier
If you wanted a calm non biting training with a cockatiel, you should of gotten a hen.
