Definitely made me wonder about his vision in that eye. Could even explain some of the biting behavior if he can't see well on that side and gets surprised by things coming from that direction.
Maby hi doesn't see well with his right eye and that's why he's less reponsive to training from that side? His "meepmeepmeep!" at 2:02 toghether with his body language, reminded SO much of one of my cockatiels. They look sooo enthusiastic to fly when doing that xD Adorable
Poor Clyde. I sadly feel that he was not set up for success. He is keen to work with you, but I feel his intentions are being ignored due to impatience. I also think it is possible that he has vision loss in his one eye. He takes the millet from her from that side when he turns his head all the way around to look with his other eye. That shows that he perfectly understands the trick - he maneuvers his whole head in order to do it - but he is unable to accomplish it from the other angle, due either to a loss of vision in one eye, or because he feels closed in due to being nearer to the wall.
My cockatiels always touched my finger with their beak before stepping up OR getting back down. My belief has always been it was a bit of reassurance for them. I am not a bird psychologist. It’s just what I learned and observed over the years I had them. There was never a bite behind that except when I first got her and once she got over the fear of being handled she was absolutely perfect. And millet was the key. They are crazy for the stuff. It’s like crack for them.
I had a cockatiel for almost 20 years, and she was always so gentle, and yes, she always used her beak. I wonder if it’s kind of like putting your hand out when you step up onto a different surface. And fingers move, too, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable.
My theory is that Clyde is trying to train her. Cockatiels are a bit like cats; even when they know what you want them to do, they don’t necessarily care to comply.
Lol ah just realise that cockatiels are deeply stubborn devils and you'll be fine! Ozzy my cockatiel is super loud in the morning, unlike me who hates mornings. He was flock calling back at Clyde too
My first thought was that maybe he didn’t like the wall for some reason. His enthusiastic side was more open and when she turned the table away from the wall he became more responsive on that side. But just a thought, probably not right 😂
I wrote an opinion about cockatiels, a few weeks ago, regarding how different they are compared to other parrots. I hate to say “I told you so”, but………. Clyde is a very sweet boy. He’s doing his best. 💕
Exactly. One of my babies doesn't like stepping up or being on people at all, yet will let us pet him, whistles and mimics. He's just so hard headed but is so cute. Also, past a certain hour, they will hiss at you like snakes and strike and bite because they're just tired and done. And yet next morning... they're all happy and chipper and love you. It's hilarious
My cockatiel lets me know when he’s ready for bed. He’ll be out and about, singing, hanging out with me, and all sorts of other things. Then, he’ll let me know by either chirping or flying to his cage.
He looks exactly like my boy Yellow just without the cutted tail 😁 I have 2 cockatiels Yellow and Silver 🥰 and they are laying on eggs right now with 4 baby chicks in em 😍 🐣🐤🐥🐣I will try use these tricks with them, that will be fun to watch what they´ll do when i introduce it to them! 🤣 I allways LOOOVE your videos! Keep making them they are nice informative! Sincerely Pernille from little Denmark
He is just like my "Shaw"... who I still think is a hen or a very very socially underdeveloped male. He never sings to his hen, he doesn't really get the whole "love making" (there is always something in the way). And when he gets really frustrated, he wants the hen to mount him. And he screams all the time.... but he loooooves millet. He does everything for millet.
From the looks of it Clyde seemed less willing to target to the other side (before turning the table) because you were behind him (and so his focus was more on you and his unwillingness to come closer). At least that is how it looked to me.
Why would you think he'd be responsive to food right after he was freaked out enough to take to flight? After a hard landing, he was stunned. That's why you were able to pick him up from the floor without any trouble. You can tell because his chest feathers are completely flat. You did it again later, too. The poor bird was freaked, took to flight, and flew straight into a wall, and the first thing you think to do after picking him up is to try to entice him with millet and train him. Frankly, I don't get what you're doing with this bird. It seems like in every video, you do something you wouldn't do with any other bird you've trained. At least your dislike of cockatiels wasn't palpable in this video.
Could he possibly have eye site issues on the non responsive side? I have no idea what I am talking about, just a thought maybe his vision isn't the best in that eye so he can't see the target as well. ???
Hi Bird Tricks I love your videos so much you guys are the reason I wanted to get a bird. And now I have 6 Budgies and 1 kakariki and I love them all very much. I'm training 4 baby budgies right now and I'm struggling with getting them back into their cage when I need to leave the room, let them sleep ect. What should I do? (I am training them all at once)
I’d recommend training them different at times because different birds train better at certain times and if you target a bird when touches it and then the other one is heightened also your weakening the meaning of the clicker noise and if you lure them in there cage with millet then don’t give them any the won’t trust you next time so always make sure you complete your promise of giving them millet or what ever treat they like And once your finished diet conversion do a treat test with like 5-10 nuts and right down the order they ate them. Let me know if there’s any thing particular that you aren’t sure how to train it or react to something I’m a long time follower of BirdTricks (also I stupidly turned or reply’s but if you like my comment then I’ll be able to see it thx) Good things to do Fresh diet Sunlight 12 hours uninterrupted sleep Clear communication Plenty of destroyable toys Bigger the cage the better Exercise (though flight) Bathe every day apart from cold days when the can dry off (aloe is really good to use)
I hope one day I can get a cockatiel. I have 2 budgie currently and Im working with 1 who is a young female. She will step up but man is she a biter. She also isn't a huge fan of millet. She is good with target training and enjoys that. She gets all excited when I get the clicker and stick. Any ideas?
I don’t think Clyde has vision issue. I believe he has been trained on the good side more. My understanding is Birds Eye’s work independently, so they need to be trained in each eye.
It seems like he/she did not want to target train on the other side because he/she could not see the open side of the room while training. They are again really skittisch. (Yes I still think Clyde is a female by the sounds he/she makes and the movements and stuff.🙈)
Yes great example of how different each bird is ill see comments saying ‘what treat did you give’ because they most likely have the same breed and think certain breeds like certain treats it’s just a matter of doing a treat test I thought my Guinea pigs favourite treat was parsley apparently it’s basil
Horses have to be trained on both sides. If only trained on one side, that's the only side that will recognize you. Isn't that strange? Maybe prey animals are all like that. Anyway, just a thought.
Are we SURE Clyde is a "he"? He's very quiet, and doesn't seem to sing, or call with variety. Very girlish... Also, even if it counts for jack all, my female, Dusty, looks exactly alike in the face!
Please read up on perch testing. This is a super common behavior in cockatiels and it’s entirely reasonable that he should do it. I really want to give you the benefit of the doubt because you do know so much, but I see you trying to shoehorn Clyde into behavior you’re familiar with from other species. Cockatiels are not other species. I do feel you may have less frustration and impatience with him if you try to scrap what you think you know and get to know him as an individual a little more.
I don't like her approach, setup, or methods at all. Completely wrong. I have one for 23 years now. Had him since he was 3 months old. Never been sick a day in his life or even felt bad. Honestly he is the perfect cockatiel. Still energetic and has been on a seed diet all his life.Has a variety of 5. Living proof they can live on an all seed diet. This one needs a small cage left open to go in and out of to call "home". Give him some space and independence! He will be happier! He is being "over-mamaed".
I fed mine an all seed diet (with some veggies she would eat), and mine too lived for 20 yrs. It doesn’t mean that trying to do better isn’t a good idea.
My cockatiels form a bird-tornado every morning like clockwork. Intense zoomies flying in circles around the house 😂
Mine too. They clearly do it out of fun, and sometimes, my older one screams for attention before flying super fast and then displaying his wings.
Birb-nado. 🌪 🐦
Haha yep, mine too :) and when she got older, it was just a flap while hanging onto the perch.
I love when cockatiels specifically take two steps sideways when they refuse to interact. So cute .
Definitely made me wonder about his vision in that eye. Could even explain some of the biting behavior if he can't see well on that side and gets surprised by things coming from that direction.
I thought the same! 👀
Maby hi doesn't see well with his right eye and that's why he's less reponsive to training from that side?

My tiel girl Loona is chirping back at Clyde. Someone's got a crush lol😂
🥰

Same here. Cockatiels are super clumsy, so I don't worry if my boy puts his beak on me to step up. It helps him keep his balance.
I had a cockatiel for almost 20 years, and she was always so gentle, and yes, she always used her beak. I wonder if it’s kind of like putting your hand out when you step up onto a different surface. And fingers move, too, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable.
Clyde is such a funny little guy. He just wants to give you a tough time until he finds the hooman of his dreams. 😉😂
My theory is that Clyde is trying to train her. Cockatiels are a bit like cats; even when they know what you want them to do, they don’t necessarily care to comply.
The subtexts are great. Nice job Jamieleigh
I haven’t watched for awhile, it’s good to see he can stand on your hand without your Jacket covering.
Awww I'm glad Clyde is in a better mood!
Love the bird captions - spot on :D
This made me laugh because my cockatiel flies all over my house and insists on being held. He would never stay that long just chilling lol
I cant explain it, but cockatiels are the Cyndi Laupers of the bird kingdom
I just love cockatiels❤
That helped a lot. Thanks for posting cockatiel vids
“Not a morning bird.” I felt that. 🥱 🌞
My cockatiel gets the "zoomies" sometimes and will fly like crazy all over the house. They just do that when excited.
Lol ah just realise that cockatiels are deeply stubborn devils and you'll be fine! Ozzy my cockatiel is super loud in the morning, unlike me who hates mornings. He was flock calling back at Clyde too
The word stubborn is spot on.
My first thought was that maybe he didn’t like the wall for some reason. His enthusiastic side was more open and when she turned the table away from the wall he became more responsive on that side. But just a thought, probably not right 😂
My cockatiel's favorite treat was young celery leaves, the ones from the middle of the stalk.
Definitely getting better with each interaction, me thinks Clyde is adjusting to his new surroundings because of you. Thanks for sharing.

@@Avatinfernus You’re SO right! My cockatiels are the same way! When it’s nap time, it’s like, “leave me alone human!”☺️
My cockatiel lets me know when he’s ready for bed. He’ll be out and about, singing, hanging out with me, and all sorts of other things. Then, he’ll let me know by either chirping or flying to his cage.
Mine put themselves to bed. They go right in their cage and start grinding their beaks,
@@abbybailey5933, he does that sometimes as well. 😄
Good morning 🌄🌄🌄🌄🌄🌄🌄🌄
Good morning Jamie!! Thank you for the awesome video!! Hope everyone is doing well!! Have a nice day!!

I'm not a morning bird either, Clyde!
Cutie ❤
Awww my favourite cocktail ❤❤❤

I agree, you can’t just approach tiels any old way you feel like, they’re quite particular.
Why would you think he'd be responsive to food right after he was freaked out enough to take to flight? After a hard landing, he was stunned. That's why you were able to pick him up from the floor without any trouble. You can tell because his chest feathers are completely flat. You did it again later, too. Clyde I don't blame you I'm not a Morning person either.
Nice video
I feel so vindicated that my cockatiel is the same as Clyde in terms of sass.
🤣
He's adorable. 💜 Maybe it was the wall he wasn't comfortable with. 🤔
Whoa it's been a while since I came here.
Yay new BirdTricks video!!!
The intro is as groovy as ever
I have found that cockatiels are not morning birds. They like to zoom around and they often use their beak to step up.
Could he possibly have eye site issues on the non responsive side? I have no idea what I am talking about, just a thought maybe his vision isn't the best in that eye so he can't see the target as well. ???
Is his vision bad on his right side?
Cockatiels are like cats. Sometimes they dont want to listen.
❤
Maybe Clyde is a sweet treat kinda guy
when i needed to use my left hand to pick up my tiel, he backed up onto my hand and then turn around.
Hi Bird Tricks I love your videos so much you guys are the reason I wanted to get a bird. And now I have 6 Budgies and 1 kakariki and I love them all very much. Good things to do
Fresh diet
Sunlight
12 hours uninterrupted sleep
Clear communication
Plenty of destroyable toys
Bigger the cage the better
Exercise (though flight)
Bathe every day apart from cold days when the can dry off (aloe is really good to use)
I hope one day I can get a cockatiel. I have 2 budgie currently and Im working with 1 who is a young female. She will step up but man is she a biter. She also isn't a huge fan of millet. Probably couldn’t see the wooden stick in front of a wooden background.
Make him a food-bowl-like nest filled with food-like strata
That shouldn’t be done because it makes them nest and lay eggs and get really hormonal
Will he go onto the pellet food you have or is that a seed diet I see?
What kind of food do you make up for them?
Does he have a vision problem in one eye?
I don’t think Clyde has vision issue. I believe he has been trained on the good side more. My understanding is Birds Eye’s work independently, so they need to be trained in each eye.
It seems like he/she did not want to target train on the other side because he/she could not see the open side of the room while training.
They are again really skittisch.
(Yes I still think Clyde is a female by the sounds he/she makes and the movements and stuff.🙈)
Maybe he has vision problems on one side.
I'm quite shocked how my cockatiel hates and fear foxtail millet , idk why quite the opposite of Clyde
Yes great example of how different each bird is ill see comments saying ‘what treat did you give’ because they most likely have the same breed and think certain breeds like certain treats it’s just a matter of doing a treat test I thought my Guinea pigs favourite treat was parsley apparently it’s basil
Maybe Clyde doesn't respond well with the targets on the right side and backing up to touch the target is because he's blind on the right eye
H’s got a blind eye.
How can you tell?
Could Clyde not see well on the side he doesn't pay much attention to?
Horses have to be trained on both sides. If only trained on one side, that's the only side that will recognize you. Isn't that strange? Maybe prey animals are all like that. Anyway, just a thought.
Maybe he doesn’t see well out of his right eye
Clyde might prefer one side to the other as one side might me more physically comfortable at a particular angle ….just a thought
He's blind in the right eye?
this ain\t right hahaha
Are we SURE Clyde is a "he"? He's very quiet, and doesn't seem to sing, or call with variety. Very girlish... Also, even if it counts for jack all, my female, Dusty, looks exactly alike in the face!
