The Soundtrack Music to The Matrix, by Don Davis, is an incredible work of Minimalism, influenced by John Adams, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, as well as others such as Lutoslawski and Ligeti.
This video looks at the minimalist music in Don Davis's score for the Matrix, and how it uses Motifs, Themes, Theme, Ostinatos, Rhythms, Canon, and other techniques to achieve its effect.
The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions were three important films in the sci-fi genre.
While the Matrix also included many techno pieces, such as the famous Clubbed to Death by Rob Dougan, this focuses on the main score composed by composer Don Davis.
We look at music for the Agents including the fight scene agent smith vs Neo, as well as Sentinals, helicopter crash scene, and others.

A cool tidbit about the "Sunglasses Indoors, during a Thunderstorm!"
Originally the Wachowskis had planned to use the sunglasses as a device in the film, the sunglasses allowed them to see code while inside the Matrix and at the end Neo realizes he can see the code without them. Originally they were a link to the console in the real world, they let them see the difference between programs, humans, and agents, and anything else like ammo counts, where the others are... etc. So everyone we see either wearing sunglasses or I some cases (the Marovingian) didn't need them. They said they removed that from the film to give more weight to the reveal at the end where Neo can see the code of the Matrix and realizes what he has become.
I think they said that it is still true, and the sunglasses have a purpose but they just removed the scenes, apparently later scenes even reference this fact... like the highway chase, how they find eachother, recognize when something is wrong, and tell programs from humans easily. That is also why all Agents wear shades and earbuds.. the shades are the window to the code, and the earbud is the _connection_ to the code. We see this when Agent Smith literally unplugs himself from the Matrix with his earbud, and at the very end he also removes his glasses, because now he too can see without them. The sunglasses are kind of the opposite of what they are, instead of blocking or limiting vision, they enhance it.. showing the wearer truth and knowledge, but only what they are allowed to see in the code. Or you could say that the shades "block" the illusion of the Matrix and show them the truth... the code.
Just a cool tidbit that enhances the movies for me... also they just look damn cool!

Seriously thanks for this video - I always thought the Matrix score was heavily inspired by John Adam's early style. I can think of quite a few film scores BTW that rely on atonality and dissonance - Howard Shore's early work with Cronenberg, for instance. Jerry Goldsmith, Planet of the Apes, loads of others.

"The effect comes off almost like crossfading between two different chords, or even two different keys, and this might be considered the main motif of the series."
In the Matrix Revisited Davis talks about the usage of reflections in the film and how he wanted to incorporate that concept into the score.
If you can get your hands on The Matrix Reloaded Limited Edition and The Matrix Revolutions Limited Edition scores put out by La-La Land Records they each contain extensive commentary by Davis in the liner notes on his creative process and thoughts for each score.
I don't have them readily available at the moment, but I remember him talking about how Revolutions was composed using a dramatically different technique than the first two. I don't recall what it was, but someone who is versed in composition would probably have an understanding.
Other fun bits included in the commentary :
-Smith's entrances in the sequels are backed by the sample
"Bosnia" from the popular 90's sample pack "Distorted Reality" by Spectrasonics (@ :46 ua-cam.com/video/l8e8DbXOa7E/v-deo.html )
-While the final choral phrases of "Neodammerung" were ultimately taken from the Upanishads, Lana wanted them to be adapted from Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but they ran into copyright issues.
    -Etc.
Those editions also contain several unused alternate tracks for some of the action sequences. One can find synced versions of the tracks and footage on UA-cam. One track imparticular, "For Neo (Extended Edition)", (found here: ua-cam.com/video/kl4TxzWFfmE/v-deo.html ) would have, in my opinion, been an improvement to the final version. It is the cue at the finale of Revolutions, but it references back to the Main Motif for a second right before it concludes. It puts such a nice musical cap to the ending that I feel is sorely missing in the film; it boggles my mind that they opted not to use it.
Great video, thanks so much. I learned a lot.

The wearing of sunglasses inside the matrix is actually a nod to the anime world. To avoid having to animate the eyes of the anime characters the animators simply made them wear sunglasses. Obviously this wasn't an issue in The Matrix, but it's a clever reference to anime world which the movie was heavily inspired by.

The academy snubbed Don Davis completely - quite revealing, particularly when you consider the fact that, for example the three-chord bullshit Hans Zimmer scored for Inception and other underwhelming crap get nominations and accolades. I throw up a little in my mouth whenever I think about it. This music was so gripping, dramatic and complex while the collaboration with Juno Reactor showed innovation and originality beyond anything symphonic scores offer to this day - how this did not get more attention is just beyond me. And the music with a faster rhythm is perfect for the space race hehe
Of course, it also works with the idea of putting the era's composers for each era of the game, so it was also logical to put him for the last era.

Great video about a great score. One of the things that I find the most fascinating about Davis's music is that "bending the rules/main theme" that he took from Harmonielehre. Just as the Matrix and the real world are reflections of each other, the same goes with chords - if you draw an axis of symmetry between two half steps, e.g. B and C, and then tried to build two perfectly symmetrical chords by adding up thirds, you'd get e-minor and c-major, which is exactly how that theme is built!

This video helped me with a Matrix video I just made, I was trying to put a beat over the track Anything Is Possible, and I for the life of me could not find the tempo.
After watching this video you point out how the music is atonal and rhythmically shifting on purpose, so instead of trying to nail a BPM I just sort of tried... feeling it, since that song is very ethereal, it worked well enough :) ANYWAY, yes this soundtrack is pretty unique, the only thing I've heard that has ever sounded like it was a bit of Philip Glass' Pruit Igloe and Prophecies (around the middle). The tendency for action film scores when they want to be intense is to pull a wannabe Hans Zimmer and go for some lowdown strings, but the Matrix is all about GLORIOUS BRASS, it's something else, and like the rest of the film it's masterful.

  • @ErikWoodsCinSoundRadio

Love the videos. More film music analysis the better but I hope you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism. You need a better microphone. You sound like you are in a hollow, echoey, overly bassy room and it's really difficult to get through these videos because the commentary becomes quite grating. I'm not criticising the content, just the production values. I'm not sure what gear you have, maybe you have a great mic, but you really need to work on proper mic technique or find a better room to record in or buy some sound treatment or get a better mic or do some post-processing to clean up the recorded audio. The visuals are great but audio is 50% of the experience. Just my two cents.

I would like to say that there is one thing from Matrix Revolutions that the soundtrack comes full circle, from the "Neodammerung" there is a chord (D Minor) that reflect the first time Neo confronts Smith personally at the subway.

To me, what always stood out was the selection of tracks from the original soundtrack. I remember listening to the Matrix playlist for hours and hours. The actual score was definitely atmospheric, but nothing I particularly cared about.
Thank you for your video nonetheless. For me an eye-opener.
    Anyways, here's to nostalgia:
    Track listing
"Rock Is Dead" by Marilyn Manson - 3:11
"Spybreak! (Short One)" by Propellerheads - 4:00
"Bad Blood" by Ministry - 5:00
"Clubbed to Death (Kurayamino Mix)" by Rob D - 7:26
"Prime Audio Soup" by Meat Beat Manifesto - 6:17
"Leave You Far Behind" by Lunatic Calm - 3:13
"Mindfields" by The Prodigy - 5:40
"Dragula (Hot Rod Herman Remix)" by Rob Zombie - 4:37
"My Own Summer (Shove It)" by Deftones - 3:34
"Ultrasonic Sound" by Hive - 4:54
"Look to Your Orb for the Warning (Radio Edit)" by Monster Magnet - 4:42
"Du hast" by Rammstein - 3:54
"Wake Up" by Rage Against the Machine - 6:04

The opening rooftop chase is borrowed almost shot-for-shot from Hitchcock's Vertigo, except the camera soon abandons any identification with the law to follow the fugitive, whose leap across the alley "bends" Vertigo's "rule" of binary Aryan impotence into androgynous grunge superheroism. Yet in both films, a similar musical motif signals the movie's effects novelty: Irmin Roberts' vertigo depth distortion, and (eventually) John Gaeta's bullet-time room-spinning, itself a more literal vertigo.

Love the video (only just found your channel!). Aside from the more well known Burly Brawl, Chateau and Mona Lisa Overdrive tracks from Matrix Reloaded there's also a fantastic heroic development of the Trinity Theme when he restarts her heart on the rooftop. Unfortunately it never made it to the official soundtrack album but its cool to hear that continuation, I never even noticed it in the first film until watching this.

It was fine, but I wouldn't go so far as to say the soundtrack was "amazing". With many things, music more than most, if you have to *explain* why it is is amazing, you're probably not going to convince someone who doesn't already agree.

Hello, I just started watching your videos (this is my third one) and enjoyed them very much so thank you for your great job!
In the end of the video you told us to tell you what we'd like to see and I hope this is a place where you'll read this.
So I'd really like to see an analysis of the soundtracks of the original Lion King and the new remake and maybe a comparison between them. When I was young I watched the original Lion King dozens of not hundreds of times and I pretty much know the whole soundtrack by heart so when I watched the remake I heard that these were mostly the same melodies but there were also many changes, and it made me want to know more about the motifs in the original movie and their purposes and meanings, and also what exactly Hans Zimmer did differently in the new version, ah yeah BTW Zimmer is the composer of both the original video's soundtrack and the new one's, I watched your video about him and saw you really like his works and I hope The Lion King, that won the academy award for the best original soundtrack, is no exception.
I hope this wasn't too long and thanks again for the great videos!
P.S. Please reply if you see this comment to let me know that you read it.

Great video, but I don't get why you leave out the selection and placement of the other tracks that where used. There are several tracks that where mostly unknown when the Matrix came out that are now firmly associated with a scene. For example the big fight scene before the elevator, the red lady scene or the club scene. Of course it is not film music per se but is at least worth mentioning especially in combination with Davis' score.

So GLAD you're talking about Don Davis. He really is the master of immersion (see Jurassic Park III soundtrack minus the "family" theme which I would consider an intentional farce).
It's a shame about the album history for this score. I bought the soundtrack album in the late 2000s and it only had about 30 minutes of music. Studios at the time prioritized the compilation albums of pop music that accompanied a film, presumably to push sales with the use of artist exclusives. Luckily, the rest is now available on youtube in various states of quality.
I'm also glad you brought up the Ligeti influence. "Atmostpheres", in my opinion, is a particularly useful roadmap to understanding Davis's intentions, focusing on subtle evolutions in the timbre of the orchestra and pushing subtlety in tonal dissonance rather than beating you over the head with it.
I'm shocked by how much I have been in accordance with your views. First with the Harry Potter films (I walked out of the third so angry, at age 13, that I was determined to remake the whole thing in animation form to better preserve the continuity from the first two, lol), Second with the notion that musical pastiche is a valid choice for a composer and now...well, the Matrix soundtrack being completely amazing despite the apparent lack of discussion in broader discourse.
I guess at some point in time we're going to have to talk about how Freddie Mercury takes jabs at his own music by juxtaposing it with classical opera. XD
Thank you so much for your content, maestro. Eagerly watching your feed.
