  • This is how a 1983 Honda Shadow ignition system works. I made this mainly to give people who want to have a custom ignition switch or who are restoring the bike. Hope you enjoy and I am sorry about how it is so zoomed in.

    Building a bobber with munit and had no spark and thanks to your video I was able to solve. Note my bike is a 1985 VT750 and has two boxes with 6 wires. Additional wires 2 yellow/red hooked to ign 12 v and fired right up.

    Thank you! Im working on this same model and am looking to run the munit also! Was hoping to ditch the igniter boxes or replace then with munit but looks like i will have to replace the wiring on them and keep them along with the munit

      Mark Wollander yeah unfortunately you gotta keep em, would make it whole lot easier if you could do without them. Glad it helped!

    Hi mate, really appricate this. This is the only video I could find with this information. Although sometimes the parts you were talking about were out-of-shot I'm sure you'll get better with practise. Keep it up. A video on minimum wirring for a Honda VT would be great, I'm building a dirt buggy with a VT600 so won't be installing all the peripherals.

    Sorry, I know this is a a little late to the party but the "Lock" on ignition (for these older models) only works with the handlebars turned all the way to the left hand side and keeps the bars locked that way so someone can't just walk off with your bike. The "P, " or parking mode, keeps the tail light on for when you are parked on a street and want drivers to be aware of your bike (be careful not to wear down your battery too much).

    Hey, just wanna say thanks for the info and time you took to film this. I just picked up a 1983 VT750 a couple days ago. It runs and rides but I gotta go through and fix some things. I may need a bit of info from ya if possible when the time comes. I subscribed and I’ll keep in touch. Thanks!

      You might be able to, it’s been so long since I had my Shadow and made this video so I’m trying to recall. But I guess if you figure out which two wires are extra on the bike, or could be put together, then you could just splice the 3 wire one into the bike. Just try and figure out what wires do what, and go from there. Hope this helps, sorry I can’t give you a definitive answer

    Currently rebuilding the top end of my vt750c. This encourages me not to sell every part for the bike on ebay. Did you individually wire your fans, lights, etc. As well?

      Void Skeletor I used the Motogadget M-Unit Blue. It’s basically a motherboard for your lights and accessories. “Revival Cycles” has an amazing video on UA-cam explaining the process which I highly recommend. But with the fan I used a toggle switch since my temperature sensor was broken. Just gotta remember to switch it on. Hope this helps!

      As far as I know, yes. When I first put everything back together, I originally had the wires swapped on accident. Finally swapped em and it cranked right up. Not sure what color is which, but I hope this helps.

      Check for at least 9v on front (primary) of coil WHILE CRANKING. If starter uses too many volts that could be it. Also check ohm between each (2) plug wires. Should be 13,000 to 15,000 (pretty sure). If not remove wires and check between the two output poles of each coil. Plug wires could be it.

    I have an 85 Honda Shadow VT500c. I’m getting a click when I try to start the bike from the (name ?) starter relay, located under the seat, but the bike will not turn over. I have the right Battery and it is new and good. All fuses are good, unless there are fuses I am unaware of.
    Anyone have any ideas???

    • @takemechrome2291

      I would hook up jumper cable to the starter. Turn the key to the on position but keep the kill switch off. Then take some jumper cables and put the negative end on a bare spot and the positive end on the starter post (there will be a stud on top with a cable connected to it, that is where you want it). Once you hit that post with the positive end, the bike should turn over, and if it doesn’t, check your ground to the engine and try again. If it doesn’t then over then you know your starter is bad. Let me know if that doesn’t work

    • @takemechrome2291
      @takemechrome2291  5 років тому +1

      Check your spark units, those are usually the first things that go bad. Check your ignition coils and make sure the spark plug wires are screwed in tight. Try putting dielectric grease on the ends of the spark plugs where they mate up to the wires. You could also buy some new spark plugs and gap them correctly. I did mine to about .035.
      Check your battery, your grounds. make sure your ignition coils are grounded to the frame well. If all else fails, then check your spark generators within your right crankcase. that's where perhaps your gap could be off.
      Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more Q's.

    • @takemechrome2291
      @takemechrome2291  5 років тому

      Erick Gaona you don’t need to take the whole engine out to work on the shift lever. Also your stator (alternator) is on the left hand side of your bike. So it really easy to get to.

    Hello brother I have 87 shadow 700 ...I lost the key and really need help... I bought a toggle switch and a on and off switch button and would like to know how which wires do I connect to the toggle I can't seem to figure it out on this bike if it's under seat or up front behind headlite. And do I need to take out the ignition or do something with those wires before I put a toggle switch on thank you for your help any info would be appreciated

    • @takemechrome2291
      @takemechrome2291  3 роки тому

      If you are going to use the toggle switch in place of the key, all you need to do is find the two wires coming out of the ignition switch. Then, just connect those wires to your toggle switch (orientation of the wires is not important), then just mount your toggle switch either near your handlebars or extend the wires and put it wherever you want. You technically don’t need a “on and off switch” (which is known as a kill switch) because your toggle switch can be used for that.
      What I would do is buy an ignition switch off Amazon that comes with a key, and just connect the wires to the existing ignition switch wires.
      Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions.

    • @takemechrome2291
      @takemechrome2291  3 роки тому

      @@jerrymonte8625 if you need to move it soon, I would just touch the solid red wire (it’s probably the power wire) and touch it to each other wire and see if you can start the bike. One of those wires gives power to the ignition system and will allow you to start the bike and move it until you can figure out what the other wires do. I’m not completely sure on what the other wires do. Hope this helps
