- In this video, I troubleshoot a no spark issue on the rear cylinder on my 1983 Honda Shadow VT750C. I found a bad pulse generator. The part is no longer available for this model year but I was able to use one for a newer Honda Shadow. The part number is: 30300-MBC-003. Thank you for watching and thank you to those that have subscribed! I hope that you enjoy this video. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to do so. Here's a nice bit of info for VT700 and 750 owners. I used the method featured in the video and it worked very well. But I'm a parts man and I had to do some investigating on these bikes. Honda loves to recycle designs and this engine is no exception. The 89-98 PC800 engine uses nearly the exact same basic design as the early Shadows. If you look up parts you'll see many components using the ME9 designation in the parts numbers. This engine would be an almost drop in if it were not for the redesigned exhaust port location. The pulse generator assembly looks like a winner too, but I am unsure of the stamping number on the pickups.
Great job you explained things wonderfully brother keep up the good work. All the best
Thanks 👍
First thing to check is resistance from the plug and that would tell you in a couple seconds if you even need to go into your engine at all
Crisscross pattern only matters on reassembly. Disassembly remove them however you wish.
Thank you.
Nice
Thanks for the video. I’ve been battling a no spark issue on the rear cylinder for a year or so off and on, replacing every part but the pulse generator, it’s difficult to find any info online about the 750s. I may have missed it in the video but do you remember the specs for how to test the pulse generators? I know my problem cylinder is in the rear which would be the yellow wired one, I’d just like to be sure.
The manual states that you should have a resistance of 480 ohms +- 10%.
@@wonkster1970 I appreciate it! Huge thanks from Newfoundland 🤘
Is the top or bottom pulse generator connected to the rear cylinder? I have no spark in my rear 1983 honda shadow.
I think the upper one is for the front. You could check the resistance on both of them.
@@wonkster1970 I completely forgot I commented on this video haha. Thanks for the reply. I actually ended up replacing the pulse generator and the bike runs awesome, no issues since!
Did you replace bothe coils. And how can you tell which one is for the back or front cylinder. ?
I only replaced one of the coils. You could trace the wiring to the ignition coils to see which coil goes to the front and back. The timing marks on the left side of the engine may also line up with the coils. Most of the components are identical.
I have a honda shadow 1989 it doesnt have the same spart in the rear cylander.does it front and rear have to have the same spark to work because it turns on and off
I think Honda switched over to a single pulse coil in later models. I would think there would be no spark in both cylinders if that failed.
Why are you taking off the engine side cover for no spark when you can test the resistance from the plug
I had previously checked the resistance at the coil. That tested good. There was a open circuit in one of the exciter coils. The other one tested good.
On a 1100 89 shadow
What was your problem to make you diagnose it there
I had no spark in one of the cylinders.
Have you checked the manual to see if turning clockwise is ok?
Yes, turning clockwise is okay. Counter clockwise is not good. There is a one way clutch on the other side.
@@wonkster1970 starter clutch oh yea forgot about that! Was to busy thinking about cam chains but i think on honda is the automatic type
@@wonkster1970 best to refer to thr shop manual for the particular engine. I saw a vid on here where it says the opposite way on another honda vt engine
Do you kno if this is the same on the 83 vt500
I do not know if this is the same on the 83 VT500
where did you find the gasket for that cover.?
Thanks for watching. I think that was purchased from Partzilla. Here is the link: www.partzilla.com/product/honda/11394-MK7-306?ref=63060cfc6932cdfd72cb6693282109e544697c4b
@@wonkster1970 just ordered it. Thank you brother, life saver. 👉
I have a 84 750 and have power to the coils with no spark replaced the coils still nothing
No spark at all or just one cylinder?
I had a over charge problem to where the battery swelled n poped so i replaced the rectifier n battery now it has no spark when i hold screw driver to plug wire ??
Thanks for watching. Check to see if you have voltage at the ICU when you turn the ignition switch on. Maybe there is a blown fuse somewhere. Also look at the connections and make sure that nothing is melted from overcharging.
Loved the video, but can you tell me my pick up coil has PGE-100 stamped on it so does it mean I have to use same again. I ask this question because my bike is 1986 vt700 shadow and can't find for sale only from a vt1100 , it looks like same brackets but to buy this they want over $200 and I would have to alter cables.
Check out the link in the video description. That will take you to the part that I installed. I used the coil for a VT1100. Best of luck. Have a good one. Thanks for watching. Stay safe.
@@wonkster1970 Thanks for the quick reply, I have just tried to retest the pick ups before I get new ones.
Not sure how to test them with a multimeter but I tried the lowest setting for resistance and got readings around 80.2 . Does this sound as though they've had it and i should change both.
Many thanks.
@@johnbradley192 I think there are 4 wires. 2 wires per coil. One of mine was an open circuit when I tested it. I don't remember what wires to test but I can look it up tonight for you.
@@wonkster1970 yes 2 yellow on one and blue and white on the other. So i tested the coils with appropriate wires connected to them and got readings i have told you. I don't know if i should be using different settings on my multimeter to see if they are buggered ,i just got resistant reading.
@@johnbradley192 According to the manual, it should be 480 ohms +- 10%
I have a 1983 vt750 shadow one cylinder stops firing after the engine gets warm was told its the pules generator does this sound right? Also the part number you gave is it the same for both of the pulse generators. but i don't see that part number listed for the 83 shadow any thoughts would help.
It could be a pulse generator. I had an ignition control unit on my 500 that was making it fire on one cylinder. The pulse generator that installed was the one that the 1100 uses. They dont make one for the 750 anymore. Just have to rewire the ends for it to work in the OEM 750 connector. Thanks for watching.
im working on an 84 honda shadow that currently has no spark, i just replaced the rectifier and the stator and am wondering if this is a part that often goes bad? how would i test if they dont work?
Do you have spark from any of the cylinders? I replaced the stator and rectifier in my 85 honda shadow because it wasn't charging the battery anymore. I recently swapped out the Ignition control units on my 83 vt750 with those from an 85 vt700. I ended up with no spark in either of the cylinders. I put the old ones back in and it started again. A bad pulse coil would cause no spark in one cylinder.
Stator and rectifier have nothing to do with spark
I have an 83 and nothing turns on no lights or nothin I don’t know what to do
What have you done so far? Does your battery have a good charge?
@@wonkster1970 yeah just put in a new one and nothin happens
@@synystergates2804 There is a main fuse. That could be blown.
On my 1100 there's a brown wire under the seat I accidentally hit it when I sat on it cause my seat was loose that caused my bike not to have no lights or anything I plugged it back in and had lights
R U Effin serious
You had to do all that to get to an electrical part.
I'm not doing this by the side of the road in the rain at night.
I agree. Not something I would want to do along the road.
Great video for a pesky buried part. Removing exhaust, tearing apart the frame, removing a side cover, and disassembling the clutch basket to get to these is ridiculous. Usually i applaud Hondas simple engineering but there could have been a better way for this.
I agree. It is a bit involved.
Well just finished with the part you used and your video as a guide. Have spark to the rear cylinder now. Thank you sir.
@jacobfuller8455 glad to hear you got it fixed. Thanks for watching!
Cómo se llaman las piezas que cambio
La pieza se llama generador de impulsos. Aquí está el número de parte: 30300-MBC-003
