I think Anti-Villain is a fitting description. Soldier boy sort of reminds me of Shane from the walking dead - he’s not overtly evil and has redeeming qualities but he is a loose cannon especially if sees you as a threat or obstacle
Soldier Boy reflects his father without knowing so, wich is something that happens a ton in abosuve families, where the abused becomes a lot like the abuser. So when Soldier boy does something fucked up, like beating up noir because of a movie role, it's not narcissistic, or villainous, it's a reflection of his own trauma, and IN MY OPINION just makes him look more broken than he already is. Same with Homelander, he quite litteraly says that HL is a dissapointment because he resembles him in the need of love of somebody else. though it is shown that Soldier boy is mentally better of in that sense than Homelander, wich i think means more that he is dissapointed by how exagerated HL's flaws are compared to his, than what soldier boy experienced with his own dad.
I think the Soldier Boy kind of works as a dark mirror of Butcher especially within like season 3 as Butcher kind of falls into the territory of acting like his father, especially the way that he treats Ryan towards the middle of season 3 which is ironic because he was so scared of being a dad because he didn't want to end up like his that he ended up being like his dad anyway and that was his biggest mistake.
If I had to describe Soldier Boy, its fallen. He's a fallen idol who was on the road to becoming an anti-hero. Killing Homelander was what would have solidified him as an anti hero. Butcher ruined this, which will only ensure Soldier Boy become a villain. There is also a possibility that by watching his son be a cruel dictator, he comes to realize on a deeper level how his father was right about him and tries to stop him. I never saw Soldier Boy as a villain. He was a misguided spoiled brat whose upbringing and time shaped him into the man he ultimately became.
pretty good video, a lot of people characterize him by whatever context is given by the surrounding environment but, the conversation with him and butcher about their fathers was necessary to show us why he is the way he is. obviously this isn't to say that his actions should be defended but, it makes the intentions behind them all the more nuanced
One part that interest me is how the legend talks about his heroes were hero's I can't remember the exact words but his fracing indicates that his hero's didn't stage as much
Sympathetic villain: a character who is a bad person but who's backstory/arc makes you feel sorry and sympathetic towards them (homelander) Anti-hero: a charcter who does bad things to achive a good goal (butcher) Anti-villain: a character who does bad things to achive a goal that they belive to be good, but is actually messed up. They don't see themselves as the bad guy (soldier boy)
I dont want to be “that guy”. You should enjoy and percieve fiction however you want. I just want to clarify the textbook meanings of some terms (as much as I can). Hero: A character that story follows and overcomes conflicts and obstacles. A hero is mostly qualified as morally good. First example of hero’s qualification mostly contains near perfect attributes. But nowadays perfectness of the heroes can be more flexible to make them more relatable and connectable. (Perfect: Superman, Inperfect: Spiderman) Anti-hero: Hero that lacks heroic qualities. Since this definition is too abroad, a lot hero can count as anti-hero. Even Batman can be count as anti-hero since his dark and gloomy nature is contrast to “heroic attributes” but in modern day Batman counts as a hero, flawed one, but still hero. Butcher is a textbook anti-hero with darker side of the spectrum. His actions are not heroic, motivations are not heroic but he has an emotionally vulnerable side. Because of that, even though his actions, he cant just be a villain. Villain: And opposing force against the villain that forces hero to act. That doesnt need long explanation. Example is, I dont know, Judge from Blood Meridian? Even though he is really interesting as a character, he has no backstory or tragic undertones. He is the devil of his story that pushes the hero to act. Anti-Villain: Same as anti hero, villain that lacks qualities of villain. This is definitely the most tricky character trope since it is so easy to diagnose hero-antagonist archetype with anti-villain archetype. I want to say Thanos but he is insightful genocidal, he has depth but he is still villain. Killmonger would be more fitting. Killmonger is a reasonable rebel but hero of this story has relatively more noble goals. Hero-antagonist: Heroic character that happens to be oppose the character that story follows. My Example is L from Death Note. Little bit anti-heroic, but in the end he tries to catch a serial killer. Villain protagonist: Villainous character whom the story follows. Yagami Light from Death note (again). He is full on villain, he is homicidal, he has a god complex, and he is willingly kill good people just for the sake of keeping his identity. He is irredeemable. He is not definitely a hero but story follows him. Soldier boy is impossible to identify. He is not the hero, both means and narration. He is not anti-hero since he is an uneasy allay, not in the hero-team. He is not a villain since has better means and he is man of his code but he is not anti-villain either since he is still sociopathic (he is a parody of hard-to-work-celebrity trope). He is just an antagonist.
Also part of the appeal of soldier boy is that he decides people bye my own definitions as a film maker he is an anti hero are a chaotic neutral character jenson does a great job layering him he is clearly redimable while at the same time being completely untouchable
I don't think you fully grasp soldier boy's thoughts and motives. Like with him taking out Homelander and Ryan. Now you don't have to agree with me on this as it is just my opinion but he didn't want to kill Homelander just because he saw him as a disappointment but because he finally understand why his dad hated him. He saw just how alike he and Homelander are and it disgusted him. He wanted to raise his child to be better than him but Homelander was just a darker reflection of him and that is what made him a disappointment. As with Ryan he didn't want to kill Ryan in that moment only after he got in the way. Also like he said he was just following Butcher's advice that blood doesn't matter so why would he not do the same with Ryan. At the end Butcher put that mentality in Soldier boy's head and Butcher ends up going against doing the think he told soldier boy to do. Now I'm not saying that Ryan should die but the fact that Butcher was the one who told Soldier boy that family doesn't matter in the grand scheme making him responsible for putting Ryan in danger in the first place. All it proves that butcher is a hypocrite in the end.
Im typing this before I watch the video to see if our opinions line up. I'll just come right out and say I dont think soldier boy is evil. I mean, we cant even blame him for anything bad that happened during the war because it was apparently all just staged and he never saw real combat. Though the writers seem to flip flop on how active "Heroes" actually are in the boys universe. So all we really know for sure from the show is that soldier boy abused his team and they betrayed him, and we know he wanted revenge for their honestly justified treachery. In conclusion, Soldier boy is no hero, but evil is a bit of a stretch to me.
Nah he’s legit evil. Shows no remorse for the innocent lives he’s taken, is racist, sexist, and abusive to people who have less power than him because it makes him feel big. Has no morals and no objections being a government weapon(assasinating jfk, Kent state shootings, etc). Soldier boy is plain evil.
