  • Some supermarkets now use bags they claim are 'compostable' so I thought I would put them to the test and see if they actually do decompose!

This is nice. I hope this kind of plastic become more usable by big companies. It is more sturdy than paper bags.

I think it’s only a few stores atm. I use compostable caddy liners for kitchen scraps now as well.

Wow this is amazing! This would be great if this kind of plastic was used in food wraps, toy packagings, and etc. etc. Imagine how wonderful it would be! I can envision such a beautiful world!
    Thanks for sharing this! 💜

At this stage it wouldnt because it actually creates more issues then it solved with the current garbage processing. They dont decompose fast enough for the companies to handle them so they polute the compost created by the garbage disposal companies. Right now its better to use plastic bags and seperate them correctly then to use bio plastics and throw m in the compost. Counter intuitive but true unfortunately.

I was looking to get compostable trash bags off Amazon and this was the exactly the kind of video I was looking for to measure my trustworthiness in them actually biodegrading.

Yes, I was sceptical. I think you can kind of tell from the feel of the bag whether it will decompose as they have a certain kind of feel to them.

@@northlondonallotment6745 They have to have a certain standard don't they they? I don't have an allotment however my council does allow me to "recycle" food waste in our brown bin
They give us free compostable bags too which does help. Basically all that waste will go to a site, to go to a composting site.
All in all, it means very little of my waste gets thrown into regular waste which is quite nice

The first was from the Co-Op and I think the second was a Waitrose vegetable bag. I have to say, I don't see many but I do find some food packaging that looks plastic but is corn starch so I throw that in as well.

I switched from regular plastic to the composting ones a few months ago just a small way to use less plastic I hope.

These bags are designed for composting in an industrial facility, not a garden compost heap

    • @KenKen-ui4ny

This video kind of says different thought. It may not be as super fast as in a industrial facility, but it’s better than nothing compared to oil made plastic, that will be around longer than some of us will be. I can see this type of plastic being a solution to single use plastic products that we can’t out phase due to sanitation reasons, like disposables gloves, which we have seen was one of the most common used single use products besides mask during the high of the Covid pandemic.

I compost almost everything! When I get things from the shop I read all the fine print to see if it’s compostable! As well as the bags I’ve composted corn starch packaging and all the cardboard.

Question, If I use this will liquids eat through it? Say in a typical garbage sense where the bag is in the can for a week or so?

    • @northlondonallotment6745
      @northlondonallotment6745  2 роки тому +1

It depends what’s in it to be honest. A week is about best before it leaks and then I add the bags to the compost or bag/box them if I can’t get to the plot.
