- The Good: The Mini Cooper S is one of the best-handling compact cars we've tested. Acceleration is surprisingly good and steering is quick and direct, particularly with Sport mode activated. Wide arrays of technology and performance upgrades are available as options.
The Bad: Fully optioned, the Cooper S can get quite expensive. The ride is harsh and turbo lag is an issue. Cabin controls are scattered confusingly around the dashboard. Navigation is DVD-based and Bluetooth doesn't feature audio streaming or phonebook import.
The Bottom Line: The Mini Cooper S can be polarizing with its style over substance cabin and harsh, performance-oriented ride, but with a list of options longer than the car itself, it's easy to make the Cooper your own.

It did take me a day to figure out everything including the heated seats etc.
And tons of people walk up to it, wave at it, beep at it, blink at it and smile at it.
I get 33 mpg average.
And it is really fun to get on it zooming down an entrance ramp and watch heads turn.
Only my Red Volvo P1800S, twin downdraft carbed, 5 speed with Michelin radials, way back in 1969 got this much public loving.

lady get your facts straight if your going to critique cars, the center dial is based on the fact that the mini was originally a racing car. The center dial was placed in the center so the navigator could see the speed etc while helping the driver navigate through the city while racing.

@ 2:32 It's a 1.6 turbocharged four cylinder in the Cooper S, not a 1.4. I mean if you're going to do a car review, at least get the engine specs right...Tells me all I need to know about how much I should trust this reviewer!
hey btw you hit the car when you did parallel parking,.... and also when you advertise the Mini you dont mention "annoying" this or that..how can the car be annoying if you actually are enjoying it... Mini is awesome and good choice if considering buying a car - its sollid, grounded, has a European style to it, I love it!!!! Im driving Mini and its my 3rd one!!! And my kids love it too!
If the MINI is overengineered its because its German owned. Besides that its supposed to be quirky and dorky inside. That's part of the charm. Some people like it, some don't. But there's a reason this car is niche' cause its not a car made for the masses, its made for people who like driving. As well as not the same old mainstream boring designs. I hate that reviewers cookie cutter their reviews and put the same expectations on cars that are in different classes or market.
Why do reviewers complain that the electronics are hard to use? If you're buying it you'll learn, even if it takes you a few hours. I own a 2010 MCS and it's freakin awesome

This lady hates everything that makes Minis what they are. They're supposed to be different and quircky. You have to realize what the car is.
Sorry 6 foot lady, but you are pretty crazy lol. At least get the engine specs correct. Actually see if the controls are THAT hard to find.

Congrats, you did a full review and didn't do one twisty turn on the road... FAIL.
Took all of 2 minutes to get used to the stereo controls. People confuse the simple layout as complicated unfamiliarity because everything you need is within reach of your right hand. Oh no, how awfully convenient! And she loses all credibility (not that she had any), when she fails the parking attempt.

@TearsForMyPeople I thought the mini was designed in response to the Suez Crisis as a practical, efficient economy car and alternative to the BMW Isetta. I also thought the sports application only really started up after John Cooper joined Alec Issigonis in 1961 to design the Mini Cooper and Cooper S. Well, at least you know more about the Cooper than this woman does...

well well... she criticises everything that the MINI cooper is suppose to be! A drivers car, reponsive, with great feel, quirkiness with drippings of retro sensibility...thats what the MINI COOPER is , this lady " bags " all the coopers attributes , NO IDEA AT ALL

i think she'd be better off in a big old luxury car given her complaints. She whines about the things that make it fun to drive.

Okay, first of all she's a terrible driver. At 3:20, she shouldn't have passed the taxi because the street she was on had a double yellow line, not a broken line. Secondly, (if you watched the very end of the video) they included a blooper of her bumping into the van while parking the MCS, right after she said it was perfect for city parking. Come on cnet, shape up and stop picking on MINI!
How can you give this woman a car to review if she doesn't even know how to drive?!

Worst Mini Cooper S review ever. LOL @ 4:17 she can't even park a Mini without hitting something? I'm guessing she drives an empty SUV around all day. I suggest she stick to reviewing those.
