One thing I really respect about Dreamworks is that they try different stuff all the time, and are not bound to one demographic. Some of their movies are obviously more inclined to children, like Trolls and Boss Baby, and some push for a more adult feel, like their older 2D works. Most of the time though, they manage to cater to everyone, somehow. They are the only studio, I feel, that truly gets what "for the whole family" means.
I'm one of the few defenders of DW's less critically acclaimed movies like the Trolls franchise, because if those movies give Dreamworks enough money to make more masterpieces, then I'm fine with them existing. I'm not going to watch _every_ single thing they do, but I'm glad they have such a wide arrange.

I agree. Dreamworks tries all sorts of different things while Disney normally sticks to one. Unless they try the new animation style sweeping theaters and just stick with making characters look as real as possible or live-action, then they will not get the money they think they will get from animation-hungry adults like me

YES. When they create a mediocre or average movie, it usually takes people a little longer to remember that it is a part of their library. But when they create a banger, it DEMOLISHES the competition. I would much rather watch How To Train Your Dragon, Shrek, or Kung Fu Panda over most of what Pixar has to offer. Aside from The Incredibles, then it would have to depend on how I'm feeling that day.

Disney has had its slumps before though. If I recall correctly they almost went bankrupt during World War Two when their primary output was Allied propaganda and they needed Cinderella to save them in 1950.
And after Walt died in 1966, the company hit a slump leading to Don Bluth going into business with Steven Spielberg and driving the Walt Disney company to the verge of bankruptcy to the point where The Little Mermaid had to save the company from financial ruin.
And after The Emperor’s New Groove somehow flopped it took almost a decade for Disney Animation to recover.
It’s by no means clear that this is the death of Disney as a big shot animation studio

I know that Dreamworks is often infamous for making masterpieces or utter memable garbage, but I honestly think the balance is a testament to their ingenuity.
Pixar or Disney would never touch a concept like Turbo with a ten foot pole, but it’s such a bizarre idea that it works for me.
They are so determined to stick to the status quo that they never branch out and try something potentially divisive. Their newer movies are so stale and boring as a result. Trolls 3, for all it’s garbage, will unironically be more creative than all the live action sludge fests Disney craps out these days. I may not personally enjoy it, but I appreciate how Dreamworks doesn’t hold back.
I would argue that Dreamworks’ highs are higher than Disney’s by a landslide.

I think what induced this whole "studio wars" you say is how Disney started purchasing literally everything recently. Lucasfilm, Marvel, Pixar, Bluesky, 20th Century Fox... when one company grows this big, people kind of start worrying about independent/different view moviemaking and start rooting for the "underdog". I'll always be more critical towards Disney movies, knowing well they have close to infinite amount of resources and should make perfect movies all across the board instead of scuffing their jobs in confidence of remaining in top whatever happens. A good example is how both Turning Red (which was a decent movie btw in my opinion) and Strange World (which was kind of mid ngl) had double the budget of Puss in Boots, yet DreamWorks managed to make something much more unique and memorable with a significant disadvantage. Why? Cause they simply need to put effort into their works. They can't settle for mediocrity the same was Disney does with its lazy remakes. That's why competition is extremely important in the industry, it encourages studios to be more unique and experimental in hopes of catching more attention.

They're not an "underdog". Do you even know who owns DreamWorks and Illumination? It's Comcast, the telecom giant that has nothing to do with animation. Comcast tried a hostile attempt to buy Disney years ago, but they failed and ended up buying Universal, and therefore, DreamWorks and Illumination.
Comcast market cap is higher than Disney's, and corporate America does not care about animation, storytelling, or originality. Disney has been in animation for 100 years, and there have always been ups and downs. The people who started DreamWorks are long gone because they sold it. The only thing the high up executives noticed is that Mario, the movie based on an old IP and using a Pixar/Disney look made more money than any original story/original looking animation in a few years.

Being realistic here, they both have their pros and cons like every other company does. It's not like everyone is perfect far from it, but if it wasn't for Disney firing Jeffery Katzenberg, we wouldn't have got DreamWorks much like Nintendo did with Sony. Now a days, Disney is too afraid to take chances and focuses on the wrong audience for the past several years with Walt Disney Animation to Pixar to even Marvel and Star Wars. DreamWorks, whether you like their films or not, is a little more creative and experimental and takes chances. Whether they succeed or not and whether we like it or not, it's going to make some impact to the company (Looking at you Boss Baby, you don't deserve better and a third sequel).
My point here is, my respects leans towards more to DreamWorks because they tend to be a little more creative and experimental and treat the audiences with some respect. The same cannot be said for Disney, at least not anymore since 2016-2017 to me, as they've been becoming more hateful to it's main audience and it's obnoxious push for political agendas and identity politics each passing year.

Both have pros and cons, box office bombs, and underrated movies, but as you said, Dreamworks takes risks with their movies and Disney hasn't done that in a long time. Unless Disney is willing to change or take risks, (and stop with the live-action bull, which they won't) then Disney's animated movies won't be a success. @@ordinarylittlebastard3248 totally agree. In fact, it's why I didn't like the video makers comment that Avatar and Puss in Boots shouldn't be compared. It is precisely because Avatar is a movie simply made to be a spectacle rather than a film, that it should be compared to the likes of Puss in Boots. Not in terms of content, but in terms of intentions and execution. Both are sequels, and while one had a much more massive budget and commercial success, failed to tell any story and leave a lasting impact other than how great it looks. While the other sequel had half the budget of its predecessor film, but still managed to inspire and touch on fundamental truths, because it's intent was to better the character arcs... all while also being a damn entertaining film. Obviously, Puss in Boots was still made to make money, but at least it bothered with writing actual characters at the same time.
It is clear which sequel is better, and I think these comparisons are good because it should get people thinking: why should movies that are made purely for the visual spectacle be made when other storytellers and artists, who are not as popular, have actual stories they want to tell? It's 2023, and we should stop giving our viewership to productions that are made simply for money and spectacle, and reward the films instead that want to give their audience a memorable story. Sure, Avatar has pushed technology... but there are far better films that have done the same and were still fulfilling to watch because they had a purpose other than visual prowess (ex: Lord of the Rings, Interstellar, etc...).There was no purpose for Avatar 2 being made other than to get yet another $2billlion+ of revenue pumped into Hollywood, and it will just keep going because the only language these people understand is money. Keep in mind people, there are at least 4 planned Avatar sequels. FOUR. If you think these movies are made for the art, think again

@@kurisucosmo7954 agree with you so much, Puss in Boots and Avatar may be completely different, but they’re still movies, the story, characters, themes/messages should be compared (except for the visuals). Saying that Puss in Boots can’t compare with Avatar because the animation(CGI) is very different is kinda disrespectful, and for me personally, I feel like Avatar getting so much credit without a good story like Puss in Boots is kinda unfair, all of my friends go to watch Avatar, I told them Puss in Boots got higher score on Rotten Tomatoes they should also give it a chance, but they said "Maybe it got higher score because only a few people went to watch this film" ,and when I told them I’m going to watch Puss in Boots, they laughed, it made me feel like l should be ashamed… I also think that some people go to watch Avatar only because it’s popular and made for adult unlike animation. But animation isn’t just for kids, Puss in Boots is the perfect example, why don’t my friends give it a chance. A great CGI doesn’t equals a good movie, and just because it looks real doesn’t mean it’s good either, why does some people think that looking realistic means it’s for adult and that makes it mature, maybe the reason why Disney is making those live action films is because people think this way, just look at the live action The Lion King, it’s bad but somehow made a lot of money. That’s why I think Avatar and Puss in Boots should be compared, and people should support films like Puss in Boots which has a lot of heart put in to the film, films like this deserve more.

My thoughts on the state of things recently is that Disney has become complacent. It has been THE animation studio for as long as I can remember, producing a lot of great stuff that put them at the top and made them the juggernaut they are today. But that rise also means they feel they don't have to try experimenting anymore from their routine plot formulas because their position is secure, and they can make the same story over and over again while pushing politics on its audience to score some brownie points.
DreamWorks, on the other hand, has been the underdog. They've been willing to try something different in a bid to gain some ground to stand on. Some of it has been good, some has been bad. Some had potential, but never got the audience they deserved. But at least they're trying. The fight on the bridge in Kung Fu Panda? The animators didn't know how to do that. Someone like Disney might've decided to cut that out for fear of it turning out bad, but DreamWorks decided to do their best anyway. and I don't think they've pushed politics into their films beyond maybe a joke or two.
What Disney should be doing is looking at how much DreamWorks is surpassing their current films, see what is working and what isn't, and change their approach. Try something different. Or at least go back to having an actual villain instead of interpersonal problems.

The reason for this is because I found that films like Mulan, Tangled and The Lion King are amazing in terms of their animation, characters and narrative, with DreamWorks achieving the same results with films/ franchises like The Prince of Eygpt, Kung Fu Panda and How to train your Dragon. As such, I don't believe that one studio is superior to the other since both have had their fair share of successes, failures and underrated gems over the years.

I highly doubt we’ll get another animated film based on a biblical story considering how sensitive some modern audiences are to certain subject matters in the Bible. For example, I highly doubt you can do an animated adaptation of King David without including the part where he lusted after his friend’s wife and sent him away to war to die so he could marry her or even an adaptation of Abraham where he has sex with his wife’s Egyptian handmaiden by his wife’s orders to have a son/heir early instead of waiting for his promised son/heir from God.

If I could pick just one bible story for dreamworld to turn into a movie I would pick the book of Esther.
It has everything that would make an awesome movie. A attempted assassination, an evil advisor with hilarious laugh at moments, an awesome main character who checks off modern studios need for a strong female protagonist while also being feminine.
The best part is they could match the name with their previous bible movies and call it the queen of Persia.

The worst thing is that in these comparison videos they don’t even put any arguments. They just put better music for the one they like with good emojis and they put bad music for the one they hate with bad emojis. Also, they always make sure to choose the worst parts of the movie for the bad ones. For example, Turning Red, they always use the twerk scene as if it defines the whole movie. These people have no arguments and they think that putting the good part of the music on the « good » studio will make it look better.
That remembers me these edit with people comparing modern days vs the past, in the case where the past was way better. But not the past like the 80s, no no. The past like the Middle Ages, Jesus Christ era, the 19th century etc…
« Ah yes, things were much better back then when we could murder each other for religion, when the majority of the children were dying in their infant years and when women did not have rights back then. Such good time and memories 🥺🥰. But Modern times where more and more people are having freedom, when you can finally marry the person you want in some countries without being hated for that, when you don’t have to be killed because you don’t believe in God, when racism, sexism, antisemitism and homophobia are finally starting to be judged, nah I hate Modern Times. It sucks so much. »
I should make an edit of this one day.
Yeah. I agree. Past has it’s goods and it’s bad and same for Modern day, it has his goods and his bad. But comparing those two and absolutely hating on one of them will not change anything. I like both Past and Modern day. Somedays, I wished I had lived during the Antiquity and other days, I am happy and glad to be born today. Things are grey, not black or white. And I feel like some people forgot it.

I just hope that in the Shrek 5 movie, once Disney buys DreamWorks, all the Official Disney Princes and Princesses from their respective movies appear, especially all the characters from Rise of the Guardians movie, from Frozen movies, from How to Train Your Dragon movies, from Brave movie, from Tangled movie, from Moana movie, from Raya and the Last Dragon movie, from Encanto movie and the most important character in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Melody, the daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, and thus, they will be the new main characters of the Shrek 5 movie so that they help Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, the children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, the children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and the others to defeat Rumpelstiltskin, Death and all the Official Villains of Disney and DreamWorks, as the Evil Queen, Lady Tremaine, Drizella Tremaine, Maleficent, Marina del Rey, Ursula, Gaston, Forte, Jafar, Sa'luk, Governor Ratcliffe, Shan Yu, Doctor Facilier, Mother Gothel, Zhan Tiri, Te Kā, Tamatoa, the Red Death, Drago Bludvist, Grimmel the Grimmel, Mor'du, Prince Hans, Pitch Black, the Druun, the Soldiers and Morgana, and to prevent Rumpelstiltskin, Death and the other Official Villains of Disney and DreamWorks from ruling and destroying the kingdom of Princess Fiona and King Artie called Far Far Away, Shrek along with his wife named Princess Fiona will need help from their new friends which are the Official Disney Princes and Princesses, as Prince Florian, Princess Snow White, Prince Charming, Princess Cinderella, Prince Philip, Princess Aurora, Prince Eric, Princess Ariel, Prince Adam, Princess Belle, Prince Aladdín, Princess Jasmine, Prince John Smith, Princess Pocahontas, Prince Li Shang, Princess Fa Mulan, Prince Naveen, Princess Tiana, Prince Flynn Rider, Princess Rapunzel, Maui, Queen Moana Waialiki, Hiccup Haddock, Princess Mérida, Kristoff Bjorgman, Queen Anna, Jack Frost, Princess Elsa, Princess Raya, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Anastasia Tremaine and Melody, although in reality, Melody is the first and only that she is not a true Official Disney Princess along with Anastasia Tremaine, because Anastasia Tremaine is not born of royalty, while, Melody made her debut in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea and it is also because she is the first and only daughter of an Official Disney Princess, but Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, the children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle, and Felicia, the children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and the others also need Anastasia Tremaine and Melody's help to protect and save their kingdom called Far Far Away away from Rumpelstiltskin, Death and the other Official Villains of Disney and DreamWorks, because Anastasia Tremaine is now a good person, while, Melody is the daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, but in the Shrek 5 movie, I also want to see the death of Queen Lillian, because since her husband named King Harold passed away in the Shrek 3 movie, she has felt heartbroken and that caused his own death in his kingdom called Far Far Away, and all the inhabitants of Princess Fiona and King Artie's kingdom called Far Far Away are saddened by the death of Queen Lillian, because now she is with her husband named King Harold in heaven, and now they have lost their queen, that means now the kingdom of Far Far Away needs a new queen and King Artie said that his love interest, girlfriend, fiancée and former classmate from Worcestershire school called Princess Guinevere would be the one to be the new Queen of Far Far Away, so King Artie decided to return to his old school called Worcestershire along with Shrek, with his older cousin Princess Fiona, with Donkey, with Dragon, with Puss in Boots, with Kitty Softpaws, with Perrito, with the children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, with the children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and with the others to meet again with their friends from their school who are actually Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany and their love interest, girlfriend and fiancée Princess Guinevere to take them back to their kingdom called Far Far Away, and in the Shrek 5 movie, I also want to see the romance of all the Official Disney Princes and Princesses from their respective movies, especially the romance of Maui and Queen Moana Waialiki, the romance of Hiccup Haddock and Princess Mérida, the romance of Jack Frost and Princess Elsa, the romance of Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany and the romance of King Artie and Princess Guinevere, because I think in the Shrek 5 movie, Maui will be Queen Moana Waialiki's love interest, boyfriend and fiancé, while Hiccup Haddock will be Princess Mérida's love interest and boyfriend, Princess Tiffany will be Prince Lancelot's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée and Princess Guinevere will be King Artie's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée, because Queen Moana Waialiki is going to fall in love with Maui, Princess Mérida is going to fall in love Hiccup Haddock, Princess Tiffany is going to fall in love with Prince Lancelot and Princess Guinevere is going to fall in love with King Artie, but they don't know how to tell them their feelings towards them and neither how to win their hearts, because every time Queen Moana Waialiki gets too close to Maui when it comes to true love, she gets very nervous with him, while which in the case of Princess Mérida is also the same, because whenever Princess Mérida gets too close to Hiccup Haddock when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous with him, in the case of Princess Tiffany it is also the same, because whenever Princess Tiffany gets too close to Prince Lancelot when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, and in the case of Princess Guinevere too, because every time Princess Guinevere gets too close to King Artie when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, but luckily for them, Princess Fiona will help Queen Moana Waialiki to win the heart of Maui, also Princess Mérida to win the heart of Hiccup Haddock, also Princess Tiffany to win the heart of Prince Lancelot and also Princess Guinevere to win the heart of King Artie, and I also want that in the Shrek movie 5, Jack Frost will be Princess Elsa's love interest and boyfriend, because Jack Frost leaves fall in love with Princess Elsa, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Jack Frost gets too close to Princess Elsa when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, but fortunately for him, Shrek will help Jack Frost to win the heart of Princess Elsa, except Princess Raya and Princess Mirabel Madrigal, because now they will be the only Official Disney Princesses who do not need to have love interests and who can remain single forever, and I also say the same for Melody, the daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, because like Princess Raya and Princess Mirabel Madrigal, she doesn't need a love interest either, but in the Shrek 5 movie, I also want to see the rivalry between King Artie and Queen Anna because they both want to compete in a challenge to see who is the best monarch a of a kingdom, that is, the best ruler of a kingdom, because both want to do what is best for their own kingdom, because King Artie wants to do what is best for his kingdom called Far Far Away because now he is the new King of Far Far Away and Queen Anna wants to do the best for their kingdom called Arendelle because now she is the new Queen of Arendelle, but at the end of the Shrek 5 movie, King Artie and Queen Anna become best friends in the world, because at the end of the Shrek 5 movie, they both learned from their mistakes that they have made since their challenge to compete to see who is the best monarch of a kingdom, that is, the best ruler of a kingdom, and that at the end of the Shrek 5 movie, King Artie and Princess Guinevere see their first true love kiss and that they become a romantic couple, just like Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany, and also that at the end of the Shrek 5 movie, Maui, Hiccup Haddock, Kristoff Bjorgman, Jack Frost, Prince Lancelot and King Artie become the new official members of the Official Disney Princes, while Queen Anna, Princess Elsa, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Princess Tiffany and Princess Guinevere become the new official members of the Official Disney Princesses and that one day, Princess Tiffany will be the wife of Prince Lancelot and that they have a son and a daughter, that is, a family in the future, and that also Princess Guinevere is the wife of King Artie, that they also have a son and a daughter, that is, a family and that she becomes the new Queen of Far Far Away in the future.

This entire thing could be summarized as "They make good movies when they actually focus on the story and not trying to squeeze as much money as possible from it". If you focus on the story then you can get good results, but when you create a movie which is more focused on inflicting a message, you more often then not get a flop.
Like in comparison, Puss in Boots 2 did one of the best stories of it's time of release, meanwhile they are also producing TV series like "Dragons: The Nine Realms" which apparently every video I get recommended on is a video that hates on it. The New movie focused on making a good story, while the TV sequel/Spin-off is seemingly terrible because it's likely just a cash grab.

The reason I feel people compare Disney to dreamworks is because dreamworks is bringing more quality and not quantity to their films compared to Disney as a whole. Sure turning red and luca are good films, but by the likes of Pixar that to me isn’t a good thing. Because quality feels like the minority in films. And it’s not like there’s no possibility for Disney to not make a quality film! Looking at the animated show department, they can DEFINITELY make something iconic with owl house, amphibia, gravity falls and others. But disneys actively tried screwing those projects up one way or another in favor of the endless slip of marvel films, Star Wars films, live action remakes and what have you

And as long as Dreamworks keep making these masterpieces like the last wish, then I don't mind them making a cash grab movie with toilet jokes. That company needs money, and I don't want them gone 😅.
