    Unboxing - • VORTEX Spitfire Gen II...
    Thank you again to supporter Dave for sending this in for review. Its nothing new that I would rather pick a LPVO over a prism. But that is irrelevant if you really like/want a prism. This Gen II Spitifre 5x is pretty good. It offers good enough glass and illumination. And a practical and easy to understand reticle. The fact its milled to accept Vortex's own micro red dots is not just smart, but very practical. It makes for fewer parts inbetween optics. Which means less weight, while keeping everything on a smaller footprint. Being able to go from 5x, to 1x on a microdot sounds like a pretty nice option to have.

    • @sylaconnocalys8443
      @sylaconnocalys8443 Рік тому +4

      My issue with LPVO's is really just the weight, it's got a whole ton of versatility but it be heavy. For me a prism with a top mounted or offset red dot is plenty versatile already. Wish there were more prism options on the market.

    • @maverick00084
      @maverick00084 8 місяців тому

      No doubt LPVO’s have an advantage with adjustable magnification. However, they are heavier and for similar costs, LPVO’s are not as clear. Putting a red dot on top gives 1x which is often better than LPVO at 1x. The reticle game is completely different and hard to compare. It’s nice to go from 1x to 5x while never moving your hand off the rifle to manipulate a lever. The Prisms lose the adjustability of picking the exact zoom you want though. If you have a shorter barrel - you may not want beyond 3x anyway though. It just depends on if you’re hunting or competing or whatever.

    • @alexisdetocqueville9964
      @alexisdetocqueville9964 8 місяців тому +1

      How often do you honestly use anything lower than 4-6x? Do you ever use the 1x on the LPVO or do you use a red dot anyways? For me I never see a need for anything between 1-3x, so 5x is that sweet spot. Anything closer and I use red dot, anything farther than 5x can handle is something I'm not going for with my 14.5 anyways.

    • @maverick00084
      @maverick00084 8 місяців тому

      @@alexisdetocqueville9964 I’m not familiar with what style of shooting you do. If you’re in competitions or hunting or what. I definitely know there are times when 3x would be amazing - but then I want 6x… but then I also want 1x. Compromises.

    Can you do a review on the GLX 2x you mentioned? I'm on the fence for my 12.5" AR in 5.56 for a Prism.
    And I can't get a 3x SLX Micro yet, because noone in europe has one in stock.
    The 2x GLX would be a great alternative, but 2x might be almost a bit too low for me.
    The Spitfire Gen II 3x might have been a solution, though the rticle is tiny, compared to the 5x
    Talking about the 5x, it seems to be a great option, but 5x might be a bit of an overkill and I'm not happy with the very limited eyebox

    • @CDOES
      @CDOES  Рік тому +1

      I would imagine that it comes down mostly to size and weight restrictions. The higher the mag, the larger the body typically. Whenever you see a 'short' optic the glass is sometimes compromised. Look at the swfa classic scopes. The fixed 6x and 20x are almost thr same size. If they get much smaller there I'm sure will be compromises. Despite what you do the eyebox, and exit pupil will be smaller thr more mag you get. It just doesn't add up to me.

      Gen II 3x Spitfire has, by most accounts, a serious flaw in that the reticle is too small to use conveniently. A shame, because that’d be the one I’d be interested in too.

    I got a look at this optic’s little bro the Spitfire 3x Gen II and it was not encouraging. Very tight eyebox/relief and the reticle was so small as to border on unusable. For $399 the 3x Spitfire seems a terrible value.
    This 5x by all accounts has a bigger reticle and to judge from the video here it should be more usable. With a piggyback red dot it might be a decent setup: fair amount of capability for not much weight. (The 1 MOA adjustments kind of suck for a 5x though.)

      Just food for thought most you can be off is .5 MOA and that's if you are very unlucky. Zero wind, handloaded ammo, and perfectly stable position with a bolt gun needed for that to be meaningful...even at 100 yards. Otherwise it's within the margin of error. Takes higher magnification and a different type of rifle than what these are made for really.
