As an oceanliner history enthusiast it's somewhat comforting to know that at least it wont just be broken up and turned into razor-blades. There's always a silver lining.
I was 10 years old when we sailed on this beautiful ship coming back from Europe to New York 1963. It was one of the most amazing journeys you can imagine. There is no vessel afloat that will ever come close to it in every respect. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who made that voyage possible. I treasure those vivid, lasting memories.
Shes gorgeous even in this state you can tell see is somthing not just a ordinary ship she is very special and loved by a good group of people it is sad whats going to happen I hope Florida has a change of heart and yes she still hold the blue ribbon she is a champion God Bless the Big U
Thank you for this tour. I was one of the thousands who she took across the Atlantic as I arrived as a seven year old, with my family from Scotland in May of 1958. Even in her current state, she is beautiful.
DONT SINK IT!!! If the "mighty" and once the most powerful country in the world doesn't want to save it's maritime pride and living legend, just take it out of the water and give it a chance to be admired by the next generations... To sink it, is just an unforgivable sin.
Glad you enjoyed it. I will miss this ship! I have been taking videos of the SS United States for over 10 years....you can find more from past sails on my UA-cam channel. Enjoy
Thanks for taking the time to do that fantastic fly over. It was a touching video as it brought back memories of the decade I spent as an engineer in the merchant marine.
I’m sorry to see this ship headed to a watery grave. I sailed on this ship as a 12 year old boy with my parents from Bremerhaven Germany to New York City in order to about March 1966
Thank you for the comment. Yes.... I will miss this ship.... been sailing by her for over 10 years (see past youtube videos for previous sails (including the Big J and Olympia).
The ship was full of asbestos, which is why it was completely stripped clean inside. It would cost over a billion dollars to get it back, then it would operate at a huge yearly loss. Today's cruise ships have taken over, for better or worse.
@@seewindshe will still rust at the bottom of the ocean where most of us can't go we won't be able to walk her decks I rather see this ship turned into a museum then see her at the bottom of the ocean rusting
What a kind a gracious gift you have given those of us who love this ship and are devastated that she will be sunk instead of given celebrated life above the waterline. Considering the untold waste of the US government's trillions, even in the Pentagon budget alone, and the cost to refurbish the SS United States which would be petty cash for the likes of Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk, the sadness that we will lose this great treasure of the glory days of American price and ingenuity is further evidence that this nation has lost its way from a people ignorant of their own history. When what was a vital America is left foundering in political and physical ruin, the destruction of the SS United States will be remembered as one of the landmarks in the long road of where we went wrong. Shame on us all.
Just like Pennsylvania Station New York, you won’t know what you’re missing until it’s gone and then it’s too late. It’s a shame, all the billions spent on illegal immigrants in this country when those funds could be redirected towards historic landmarks such as this beautiful ship, along with our own people in need in this country.🫡🇺🇸
Good that you mentioned Musk. The slimeball is spending millions of dollars to swing the election for trump in PA, and conducting an illegal lottery as part of the scheme. What he's spent on the election would have been more than enough to save this beautiful ship.
Sad to see the end of a magnificent ship like that, but great to know that it will have a new beginning as an underwater home for untold numbers of sea-life. Great filming, Jim!
Some less common final shots of the SS United States before being sunk in the Gulf of Mexico as an artificial reef. It's unfortunate that one of the last four ocean liners in existence (the only one designed and built in the USA) is going to be purposefully submerged for the fishes and diving set. It represents a tremendous accomplishment in ship design and engineering and speed. It should have been preserved as living, breathing part of U.S. history. Instead it will be covered up in water left rust into the sea.
Thanks for all the interest in the SS United States. For those not familiar with this fine ship, I point you to this CBS Sunday Morning video from a few months back.... enjoy... ua-cam.com/video/dXikRlIt9FY/v-deo.htmlsi=hcMX5ZuDYIONwxL-
Really great video for history to watch. It is what it is on the SSUS. At least her grave will be in US waters and NOT in a Chinese melting pot for scrap.
Ive visited the ship numerous times on my jet ski. What cant be fathomed is the size of the ship when youre next to it on the water. Its massive and looking up the side of it is like looking up the side of a building. Ill miss it
All, the SS United States departure from Philadelphia has been delayed by a few days due to weather and Coast Guard checks....need to float out at high tide and need to get under the bridges at low tide.... tricky indeed. See news update here: ua-cam.com/video/BVWqEtsSggY/v-deo.htmlsi=PCDS41vrdyf6J4_z
Thanks Jim, this was another interesting sail in the port. You always have cool things to view as you're sailing the TI. I'm wondering how all these tons of steel are not worth recycling. Towing to Florida and scuttling would also seem to incur massive costs. I'm having a hard time understanding how this is a good plan. Thanks for the video.
I've seen her at least at once a week since she's been there, while driving around the area or crossing the Walt Whitman bridge. Seeing her always gives me a warm feeling. There will be a big hole left in Philadelphia's heart when she is gone. The city may soon be spending millions of dollar to help build an unnecessary, neighborhood destroying Sixers arena in Chinatown, while ignoring this jewel right under it's nose. Sad.

That was our Flagship. Was so beautiful in its day.
Classic lines for this fine ship!

Perfect post Chris j. Thank you.

I was 10 when we sailed on her in 1963; it was magical.
Great video! It’s such a shame to see her go. It’s so sad and upsetting. Thanks so much for sharing!
Agree, we all feel the same way. I will miss the SS United States!
Another bit of my childhood gone sadly. She used to be part of Southampton like so many other liners, one of the most lovely of them
Great video! Thank you!
Thanks, I'm happy to share this farewell with you!

IMO. While restoration for ocean travel was out of cost limits, its too bad she was not put on land, and made into a fine hotel and dining facility.
I wish they could have made that happen, but the funding for that was also too high....still missing the SS United States
This ship deserves to be saved, sinking her is a disgrace and a cheap way to get rid of her 😡
This is awful. She is the only ship left of her kind. And when she's gone, she's gone forever.

Well said.So much money wasted or mispent in the scheme of things and the only "solution" they came up with is to sink this iconic ship.Sad.!.

Yea. But 0.00000001 % of the population will don a wet suit to see her. This reef crap is pure bull. It's unspeakable.

It is a tragedy though. The amount of money the U.S throws away overseas, and on our own soil, we can't save this icon. 🙄🤔

I'm surprised you didn't get chased out of there.
I have sailed next to SS United States many times over 10+ years. No issues.
She’s still a beautiful ship Elon should buy her and make it his personal yacht.

Yes, the SS United States is a classic design. We will miss her!
In 4 years talk will turn to a Presidental Library for President Trump. How bout using the SS United States for a new library ?
