      I don't think any Clois fan was liking Clark in season eight. I'm in a rewatch and of all the versions of this couple over decades, this is the only Clark that I doubt or perhaps not doubt but I can never fully support him because of what happens in season eight. Lana's arc did a lot of damage to Clark's character that they fans could see but the writers either didn't care or weren't perceptive enough to see it which, either way, speaks to their level of lousiness.

    Clark left her at the cafe because he felt that no matter what, he could never tell Lois his secret because it would put her in danger and ruin her life. Moreover, every relationship he ever had, didn't work out causing him to be afraid to let himself fall in love with Lois only to be hurt in the end. Furthermore, he knows that Lois really loves him and Clark didn't want to hurt her even more by getting in a relationship with her and end up breaking up with her.

    • @ElvisRose_
      @ElvisRose_ 6 років тому +11

      Bookworm Clark didn’t have that emotional crisis on the sidewalk across from the cafe. Yes, a lot was going on with the fact that another attempt with Lana hadn’t worked, and the time reset made him question tons about his life including pursuing a relationship with Lois but he had no business making plans with her with his emotions all tangled up. To make matters worse he stood her up. As if that wasn’t going hurt her. So many people like this episode but I am not impressed by it because after the disaster of Lana’s episodes they gave us Clark hurting Lois over and over. It didn’t make me feel better about him.

      Clark made me sick the entire series. Calling Lois as the Blur made him the world's biggest coward. Clark knew Lois for years and knew he could trust her. He should have came right out and told her the truth about himself. Because calling her as the Blur put her life in even more danger and just made him look dunce he couldn't figure out anything my himself. No only that it made it seem like he didn't care about putting Lois in danger.

      Well, I understood why they put such importance on Clark and Lana since the show started with them. Plus, I'm not sure they ever intended Lois to be on the show when it started. Maybe they thought about it around Season 3 when they realized the show would last for a while. I think they wanted to play around with the mythos and see where it led them.
      Clark really didn't have that many love interests on the show, and all the ones that were serious (Lana, Alicia, Lois), he had strong feelings for all of them. We never see him having a casual girlfriend. Every relationship he had was major, so I don't think Lois was disrespected. Clark just had a hard time getting over Lana at this point. He definitely had strong feelings for Lois. Not leading her on here and started something when he wasn't ready was actually showing Lois respect.

      janay hall Because Clark and Lois couldn't be together until Clark was a "man", and when by Season 4, Clark was still in high school. Also, the producers weren't really fans of Superman (which doesn't make sense to me but they said it in interviews they thought he was boring and liked Batman/Spiderman more) so they just went with popular opinion- Clana, which also doesn't make sense if they KNEW FROM THE START that Clark and Lana weren't going to end up together. Idk why they would prolong a fairy tale.
      tldr: smallville producers were Superman-apathatic idiots

    @luckyjasonfan I think your explanation of Clark's actions in INFAMOUS is pretty spot on. It's a complicated situation. It just would have been too awkward for Clark to be with Lois right after Lana just came back into his life and messed with his head again. He needed time to mature and be comfortable in his own skin before he could go after Lois.

    • @Michael-rp5pv

      He was just screwing with Lois. He was a grown man not 12 years old Lois shouldn't have to wait for him to grow up she should have moved on that's what any other women would have done. Clark acted way to immature for most of that series. How many times can a grown man act like a little boy.

  • @wtcvidman
    @wtcvidman 7 років тому +14

    The people trashing Clark here have completely missed everything that happened in this episode and in season 8 by this point.
    Clark is not an idiot. He learned from his mistakes regarding telling her in this episode and saw how messed up things got by exposing the secret to the world and how much danger he put Lois in. After what happened, he didn't even want to expose the secret privately to Lois because as with other characters who learned his secret in the past, if one of his enemies got wind that Lois knew, she would be right back in the same type of danger she was prior to him resetting time, and this in fact did happen in season 9's Idol even when he didn't tell her his secret but Lois suspected he was the Blur and Sacks threw her off the Daily Planet's roof.
    On top of everything I mentioned, Clark didn't know how he felt about Lois and didn't want to lead her on by telling her the secret. From the barn scene you can clearly see how much she was into Clark when she knew the secret in Infamous before the time reset and how Clark certainly liked her as a friend but didn't know how much further he wanted to go beyond the friendship boundaries with her especially after the Lana fiasco. Clark picked up on how much she liked him too, so he certainly wasn't blind to it (hell, he admitted the reason he won't tell her when he resets time is because she IS special to him). Notice how they did not have any kiss scenes or romantic stuff in the span that Lois knew his secret in this episode but how in the same time Lois really showed her feelings about him, so it was very much one sided.
    Clark did the mature thing by not leading her on without having put Lana completely behind him and treating Lois as a rebound after Lana. Clark was smart as hell because he knew Lois was way more than a rebound for him and he wasn't gonna screw it up with her when he wasn't ready to jump into anything new yet. And based on how he witnessed Lois' reaction to being told his secret in this episode, he didn't want her being more into him than he was into her. Now that is mature as hell if you ask me because he knew it would fail if any relationship he had with her was 1 sided, which would have been the case at the time.
    I can guarantee all the jaded/first-to-blame-Clark Lois & Clark fans would have had a nonstop bitch fit if Lois was showing intense feelings for Clark without him doing the same for the remainder of the season instead of just this episode. Get the hell over it. Clark & Lois were at 2 different places in their lives relationship wise and the way Clark handled it was not only mature but realistic. If Clark was a dirtbag who just wanted some action then he would have done exactly what the complainers here wanted, but he's not.
    The one thing I will say is that the Lana train should have left the station long ago and never reared its ugly head in season 8. It was ridiculous how Clark was wasted and used as a Lana babysitter in season 7. She should have been gone for good by the latest the season 6 finale. I hated how so many seasons when they had Michael Rosenbaum were wasted on the Lex-Clark-Lana love triangle when he could have been used as the villain he should have been. They did a nice job bringing Lex where he needed to be in season 7 only for him to go and us to lose out on Lex at the best part. And Clark's character didn't start getting back on track until Lana left and her season 8 return sent him a bunch of steps back.

      I think you're giving these writers way too much credit. The line about not telling Lois because she's special was generic. I agree that Lana and Clark should never have been reunited and that's the writer's fault so I can't see them developing such a multi dimensional moment that conveys what you're seeing here. Lois is not asking to bear his children... she wants to know that he trusts her as a friend and a partner that have known each other for years but instead she gets a lame platitude.

    • @wtcvidman
      @wtcvidman 6 років тому +4

      That line definitely was not generic because they made it a point to have Lois use the word special in an ambiguous way in the barn scene. Here are the lines:
      Clark: I'm going to go back before Linda Lake wrote that article. The world isn't ready to know someone like me.
      Lois: Then stay and fight back. Look, just give people a chance to know who you really are.
      Clark: It's too late Lois. My whole life I've seem different.
      So far it's straightforward at this point. But the next lines by Lois is where it starts getting a dual meaning:
      Lois: Some people spend their entire lives looking for a way to stand out, to be a person that anyone would call special.
      At first she made it seem like she was talking about Clark being special as in him being an alien so as to make him feel less awkward/strange. But in fact she's using special as a metaphor and is not talking about Clark, but herself. She' using the word special as in being loved by someone. The "some people" she's referring to is herself. The next set of lines give it away:
      Lois: When you first told me who you were, my thought was "Anyone but Clark". And not because of the alien thing, I've known enough guys to know you can be born on terra-firma and be lightyears from normal.
      Clark: Lois you don't have to explain, I get it...
      Lois: No you don't. How can someone with X-Ray vision be SO blind? I've been down the hero road before, and every time I took a giant U-Turn, but this... This was different.
      Here she's saying the reason why she said "anyone but Clark" is not because he's an alien with powers but because he's a hero and she made a promise to herself not to have hero boyfriends anymore after what happened with Oliver. She was pretty much calling back the scene she & Clark had at the end of the episode Siren when Clark was trying to comfort her after the breakup. In that scene she was sad that there was no room in Oliver's life or destiny for her. The reason why she said "this was different" is because unlike with Oliver, she was working with Clark in a common goal & Clark did make time for her. Here's the next set of lines:
      Clark: This time it will be different Lois, no one is going to remember who I am...
      Lois: And when you hit your reset button, you aren't going to tell me your secret are you?
      Clark: I'm sorry...
      Lois: (upset) It's okay... Why should I think I'm "special"? Clark, I understand.
      Here Clark is telling her that he's going to change the past so that nobody knows his secret & Lois starts fearing the worst in that he won't trust her with the secret the 2nd time around. And after he confirms that he won't, she pretty much gives away that she was using the word special about herself being special to Clark. Here is the final line that makes up for the meat of the conversation:
      Clark: Lois you don't understand, it's because you ARE special.
      This line confirms that Clark did understand what Lois meant by special and not just that she was special but that she was special to him because it was his secret that would jeopardize Lois' life. The conversation was very confusing & had to be explained to me at Kryptonsite by another user, but once it was I understood the metaphors completely and it seemed to have been written that way on purpose. Here is the post where the user, MrZeppo, explained it in detail:
      www.ksitetv.com/forums/showthread.php?122489-He-s-Just-Not-That-Into-You&p=4609362&viewfull=1#post4609362
      Lois was way too emotional in the barn scene for it to be implied she only wanted to be trusted as a friend. There's no way she was implying anything else with the word "special" but her being loved. What she said about her "no more heroes" rule (with the U turn statement) and how this "time it was different" rules out any platonic friendship & there's no doubt about it that she's referring to her past love life with superhero boyfriends (well pretty much Oliver since she only had a single date with Arthur Curry) and not just men whose secret identity she knew.
      Another thing---if you watch that elevator scene with Lois & Linda Lake, Linda refers to Clark as Lois' boyfriend but Lois doesn't correct her or tell her that Clark isn't her bf. This is more minor compared to what I laid out above. But suppose Linda Lake referred to Clark as Lois' boyfriend after writing an article making up lies regarding bad things Clark did without Lois or anyone else knowing his secret. Had this been the case, I doubt Lois would have just stayed silent & not corrected Linda Lake. Prior to being told his secret Lois was the same defensive way with Clark where even though she liked Clark, she wouldn't let anyone know or let anyone get away with calling her & Clark an item. But once he told her, she felt special/loved & trusted, especially because Clark chose her to tell his story to the world (which is also what happened to Lois in the Donner film after Superman trusted her to tell his story to the world). Not to mention that moment they had/almost had in the episode Bride, which was the last time she saw him prior to Infamous.
      Other reasons it wasn't generic was 1) the way Lois responded with the look she gave him after he used the word (Clark is genuine and did not just use that word to please/comfort her) and 2) the way he made sure he wouldn't miss picking her up from the airport after going back with the ring so that she wouldn't be disappointed with him. If Lois wasn't special, he wouldn't have put that effort in and just do whatever was needed to cover his own ass (prevent his secret from being exposed by Lake) and nothing more.
      So it's really anything but generic. I usually don't give the writers of Smallville credit (at least not the writers who started writing for the show from seasons 4 onward) but here I definitely do because they knew what they were doing.

    • @ElvisRose_
      @ElvisRose_ 6 років тому +3

      First I didn't need the breakdown of the scene. I've watched it several times. Nothing you or the other analysis pointed out anything that I hadn't already picked up on my own. Second the actors on this show always did a lot with the very little they were given to work with so the emotional gravity of this scene or any scene is due to their talent. Third I have to say that I still feel the scene is generic because the word special is not special at all. It's a word used so often that it's lost its own meaning. That is why Clark's line of not telling Lois the secret because she is special comes off as a platitude. Fourth since he was about to reset time Clark could have told her anything. He could have told her specifically what it is about her that makes "special" to him because Lois wants to know she matters to him. Also, I think that dismissing the existing platonic relationship that they have to focus solely on the romantic aspect of this episode takes away from why Lois ultimately ends up becoming more "special" to Clark than anyone else in his life. The episode starts with Clark seemingly abandoning Lois in almost the exact same way he pushed her aside for Lana. However, even though he may not reciprocate her romantic feelings at this time, Lois had good reason to believe that as her friend and co worker that she mattered enough to him to expect him to be able to follow through with a simple favor that friends do for each other like being at the airport to pick her up when he told her that he would be there. So when he isn't she is not talking about just the romantic feelings that were developing between them. Also, being there when he basically gets a "do over" is meaningless because he should have been there the first time. Then when you do add the romantic feelings into the mix the coffee scene is the third time in one episode where Clark leaves Lois to question how "special" she is to him. Of course, I must say that any and all of the romantic tension that they tried to establish in season 8 was ruined by the atrocious way that Lana and Clark's relationship ending/closure was handled. In fact, the way that they handled it in season 9 when he puts Lana's picture away in the scrap book was pretty lame. Honestly, I believe that the writers resented the fact that Lois is the woman that Clark ends up with and IMO the intensity of Clark's feelings at the end of season 8 and through the middle part of season 9 were all felt disingenuous due to the way the writers handled Lana's final story arc.

    • @wtcvidman
      @wtcvidman 6 років тому +2

      I think the reasons why they didn't have Clark tell her anything before he reset time is because 1) he was about to reset time & whatever he told her would be forgotten anyway, 2) because it would be forgotten, they didn't want to waste limited episode time with the rest of the stuff they had planned after the do-over, and 3) Clark wouldn't know what to tell her because he had to put Lana behind him after the crap the producers put him through with Lana the previous 4 episodes. Unless he's on red-k, Clark is genuine when it comes to the women he's with, so I didn't see him telling her anything when he went through the Lana trainwreck. Like I said in my first comment here, if he would've been honest with Lois and told her exactly how he felt, she would've been hurt because it was obvious she was into him and at that time he wasn't ready to reciprocate at the same level mainly because of Lana. Had the Lana crap never happened, then it would've been a completely different story---that almost moment in Bride wouldn't have been just an almost moment and Clark wouldn't have been confused/conflicted/needed time to move on anymore. Clark was definitely going to go after Lois until Lana showed up and had that happened, then for sure he would've made known how he felt. Lois on the other hand by this point had an entire season to move on after she broke up with Oliver in Siren & hadn't felt serious about anyone again until Clark. So like I said, they were at 2 different places relationship wise. It would be no more fair to blame Clark for the way he treated Lois here than it would be to blame Lois had Clark been interested in her the next episode after she broke up with Oliver and had Lana left Clark alone after faking her death.
      Also, I don't think he abandoned Lois the same way he brushed her aside for Lana because the reason he missed being at the airport was because he was busy saving people's lives. Saving lives shouldn't be compared with pushing Lois aside for Lana. Lois had the privilege of having ended things with Oliver the previous year while Clark never had the same privilege with Lana who left him and then came back just as he was about to put the finishing touches on putting her in the rear view mirror. An equal playing field would have been if Lois didn't break up with Oliver and both Lana & Oliver showed up to Chloe's wedding with unresolved stuff with Clark & Lois respectively. But that didn't happen. Instead, they made a point of showing Lois talking to Oliver on the porch in that scene (showing how they put their past aside & were able to talk as friends) while doing the opposite with Clark & Lana. Like I said, not an equal playing field at all & Clark being called out for not jumping into things with Lois like many comments here state is just BS if you ask me. From Lois' POV I agree it did seem like she wasn't special because she didn't know the real reason Clark wasn't there to pick her up at the airport, but that changes once he tells her. I just don't believe at all that Lois would hold not picking her up at the airport over Clark when she used the word special in the barn scene. Once she knew the truth about Clark, his inability to do that was completely understood, which is why she is ultimately the one for him. It would be very petty for Lois to hold it over Clark how he chose to save people from death as proof of her not being special to him in that barn scene knowing what she knew after being told the secret, whether special is defined as a love interest or as a good friend. So for those reasons I say that his failure of being at the airport was forgiven/voided by the time the barn scene came. After the redo, Clark knows where he has to be to save lives so he can save enough time to meet Lois at the airport as expected.
      When you say Clark should have been there the first time, that would be true according to Lois' POV without knowing his secret. But that is definitely not true based on the knowledge we have as the viewers because what he was doing was more important than picking up a friend. That's why I don't think it's meaningless when he goes back to be there for Lois after the redo. Because at that point, Lois doesn't know how things went the 1st time around and simply thought Clark was there for her. But we the viewers know that Clark took the extra effort to use his knowledge of how things went the first time around regarding who it was he saved and where they were at what time that he was able to save them in advance and be there for Lois, which if she wasn't special, he wouldn't go through the extra effort in doing. Even the first time around when Lois was disappointed before she was told the secret, you could see the look on Clark's face that it bothered him that he wasn't able to be there for her at the airport when they showed him standing in the rain after she tells him she doesn't expect to be at the top of his priority list.
      The one thing I will say is that it's unfortunate Lois didn't know how things unfolded before the time reset when the coffee scene happened. I agree that by then she wouldn't think she was special to Clark, but the previous times in this episode any doubts she had were reversed by the knowledge she acquired, which of course had been lost by the coffee scene due to the time redo.
      I totally agree with the derailing of what they started building up between Clark & Lois when Lana reared her head back in the show & the way it was handled. I don't think it was the writers but instead the showrunners (producers) who worshiped Lana and refused to let her be the one who gets left behind. The krypto suit thing was the dumbest idea I've ever heard and anytime some moron says that Jimmy was killed because him knowing Clark's secret or being his age isn't canon, I always counter them with Lana being in a kryptonite suit isn't canon either.
      Anyway, I know the word special has been used a lot over the series & can seem generic, but the way Lois used it in the barn scene definitely stands out when you consider the context it was used in and the events that happened the last time we saw her in Bride and consider that Lois is not petty/insecure to hold stuff over Clark when she knows the truth about him and how he can't always be there for her as a hero but will do his best and be there when it really counts. I'm convinced that by special she only meant as in someone loving her because once she knew his secret she didn't have a reason to question his loyalty/friendship anymore. And plus she didn't even need to question him about that but could've asked Chloe or any other number of friends Clark has in how he treats them. As a matter of fact had she done that, I'm sure she would learn that Clark goes the extra mile for her. Who else did he offer to live with him on the farm as recently as Bloodline before this episode (7 episodes before Infamous)?

Lois though a good character, lied a lot to save face due to her own insecurities about not being accepted as someone special by her father and all those hero exes she had. For example, in Committed, she lied about slipping the electrode from her finger to save face. She did the same thing many other times when she hid her true feelings or guarded herself from vulnerabilities she had.
      Also, Alicia is right, in the very next episode we see her (Hex) she brings up how he stood her up, which technically wouldn't be him standing her up if she too was busy but I guess she wasn't faking/lying anymore for whatever reason (maybe she liked Clark too much and thought that keeping up the act would only ruin things and decided to use guilt instead since he is known for being gullible and letting people use his guilt against him).

      @@wtcvidmanWell, he still stood her up, as technically he was the one cancelling.

Oops, she leaves so he's back to Lois! I can't explain it. I think he is a coward and didn't want to face Lois after having sex with his ex.

When he realized that she wasn't using him but there for him as a listening ear, things changed drastically and he saw her in a way he never did before. Prior to that, she was a friend whom he trusted with most aspects of his life other than his secret, i.e. alien origins & powers and the burden that side of him had. As the Blur on that call, he was able to even trust her with that on an anonymous level. And the more he was divulging that side of him, the more he realized she was the perfect one and wanted to see how things would go, but he kept hesitating of going all-in until season 10 (Isis) because of the danger she'd be in and I don't blame him for that.

      People didn't love it because the last episode featured Lana and Clark being "forced" apart because of Kryptonite. Which, btw, I don't agree with alot of peoples assumptions of that making lois some second choice (a stupid logic). Also, while the writing was shit and didn't really make sense, he didn't hesitate to tell Lana she had to soak in the Kryptonite, unlike in season 10 when he didn't hesitate to save Lois first, knowing the odds. But it was just way to soon when the fandom was pissed off.

His secret has essentially ended every romantic relationship he’s had and he doesn’t want it to happen again. Telling Lois makes her a target for any of his enemies, hence why earlier in the episode he admits to Lois once he goes back in time and fixes things he’s not telling we his secret because she’s too important, aka he loves her and can’t stand the thought of something happening to her because of him
