I first played TF2 on an old Dell laptop. I remember my first quickplay game was on Suijin - I played engineer, but had a solid 1-2 FPS so I just built a nest outside spawn.
To think that I used to play on somewhat similar specs such as this is wild. I forgot the CPU I had but I for sure remember that I had a Nvidia Geforce GTX 240 and 4 gigs of RAM.
You can play the game with lower settings, someone on youtube made a video with the lowest graphics possible to the point it's barebones. Like you leave just the geometry and players, in theory with this, it could work on a older machine!
I tried on my grandfather's toshiba laptop from 2006. Celeron 900, gma 4500g and 2gb ddr2 i think. Since windows 7 steam is dead, i tried on bodhi linux, with the ultra low mastercomfig at 640x400. It ran very similar to yours, i played many matches and ended up first in a doublecross, so it can be done.
This should be a new form of challenge. Trying to intentionally play games on the WORST settings possible and on the worst hardware possible. Almost like how with some emulators you can watch Shrek on a goddamn gameboy
I still feel like the PC I ran TF2 on back in the day was worse. yeah it ran on better architecture and an extra gig of ram (instead of your 1, there were 2) and ran windows vista back when it was still supported. although maybe I'm just getting things wrong and you're talking about the CURRENT worst PC that could still hypothetically run TF2
@@8-BitHacker I'm just fondly remembering my PC screaming as I boot up TF2 for the 800th time. (The specs of that PC was something like Celeron 420 or 450, 2GB of DDR2 ram, NO gpu, and a mechanical hard drive that probably wanted death every second.) That dell inspiron had an option for a gpu, but uh... we got the low end one.
reminds me of when i tried running this on a Pentium back when i knew nothing about computers. i got a slideshow experience. edit: actually now that i’ve watched this video more, it reminds me of trying to get that same pentium rig running like a decade later after the tf2 memory. i got windows vista up and running with a bunch of drivers i transferred via sneaker net, and then i tried installing windows 10 which unrecoverabley broke the os. i still plan to fix it up as an XP rig.
I used to run TF2 on an I3-2130 and ATI HD 5670 with 4GB RAM. It ran butter smooth on mostly max settings. I bet that same build wouldn't even get 35FPS today, and the game looks worse even.
If you use Mesa LLVM pipe for windows, you should be able to use an even worse video card since Mesa LLVM renders opengl on the cpu instead of the graphics card itself. Then you use WineD3D for windows to convert dx9 to opengl so the Mesa LLVM pipe can render the game on the cpu. All you need is the most basic display adapter you can find. Thing is, if I were to do this on Linux, tf2 requires a 64-bit Linux distro to run since bots on tf2 used 32-bit Linux to bypass VAC. I learned this through a bit of research I did so that’s why I didn’t bother doing it. Good suggestion though!

TF2 for N64.
