Positive to neg flow is know as conventional flow.(how we have been taught and wiring diagrams show)
Actual electrical flow is neg to positive through the movement of electrons which are negative charge known as Actual Flow.

oh yes. churbro25 is absolutely correct... in automotive electrical systems, it is especially helpful to think in positive to negative terms, as the ground is negative and functions as a drain of sorts.

@jambe1234567 I often install a circuit breaker in the fuse slot and unplug different parts of the circuit to see when the breaker stops tripping to isolate the fault. You might also want to check out a video that Briansmobile1 did using a "fox and hound".

Great video! One more note to add for the starter... the solenoid (in addition to completing the circuit for the starter motor) is also responsible for mechanically engaging/disengaging the starter motor pinion gear to the rest of the engine. The solenoid engages the starter motor's pinion gear while turning the engine, and disengages the pinion gear once the engine is started. This prevents the engine from turning the starter once the engine is running on its own.

Eric I have a question. When a vehicle is running, is the battery in any way helping in keeping the vehicle running? Or is it strictly the alternator? This is a question I have been chasing for YEARS, and can never get a straight answer on. I'm getting different answers from everybody.

I bought the Haynes book for my car, and the electrical diagrams don't tell me enough information. So I subscribed to alldatadiy, and a little better, but still not everything;so I got a refund. I want to know how everything is interconnected from the power distribution box to every switch, sensor, etc; as well as the logic associated with all the devices. I want to know the temperature where the cooling fans turn on, the ohm reading of sensors .I feel like the auto manufacturers like to keep us in the dark, so we just give up and take our cars to the dealships. I was so pissed a little while ago because I was trying to troubleshoot my electrical system, and the drawing of the power distribution box under the hood isn't even accurate; it shows fuses and relays where there aren't any. Why so they even bother with such a manual. Where can I get comprehensive diagrams?

@spelunkerd Yea and I think your speculation is correct because this won't come up as a new video but I'm working on a solution to that problem. As for connecting wiring, the only aluminum you really deal with is on the engine and trans parts, sometimes the body, so your really not connecting copper to aluminum wiring but rather large parts that complete the path to ground.

Strange how mechanics are taught electricity BACKWARDS. Electricity is the flow of electrons. Electrons flow from NEG to POS on a battery. All those ground wires are what supplies the power to the components. But as you said, it doesn't matter that much for diagnostics because you either have the loop or you don't.

    • @AwsomeEric100
      @AwsomeEric100 5 років тому

Its not exactly backwards. Conventional flow is the flow of electron holes. As electrons flow negative to positive, the holes flow positive to negative. This method is also used in a lot of small circuitry work with transistors and gates.

hey, eric...i am having some issues w/ 98camry4cyl...after cleaning iac/throttle body a few weeks ago, have had to replace starter, battery (bad cell), and now have blown speaker, and melted rear tail light socket, and waiting on part..and, now have brake light coming on. is all this somehow related? also, the temp guage takes a really long time to come up to normal. like 15min of driving! just replaced the radiator, timing belt, etc too
i know there must be a short somewhere..

I still have never understood the idea of a ground...you say the start is grounded to the engine block...but what is the engine block grounded to? Since tires are quite resistive, doesn't that leave electricity in the engine block and stop it from going "to ground"?
    It's all very confusing.

I've been a long-time viewer (ever since I had to do my first brake job back in 2011 or so) and your videos are always *immensely* helpful ^-^ very thorough and informative, but you still keep it engaging and easy-to-follow
Recently my brother was having battery troubles, and we would've had to get it towed and go through labor fees at a shop...likely to spend 2-3x the cost of a battery for the whole ordeal (labor fees, but also the battery was $80 cheaper than most places at Costco) But, thanks to your plethora of repair videos, I was able to diagnose/fix the issue myself and save my brother a lot of time and money. Honestly, I wouldn't have known the first thing about putting a multimeter on the battery to test it and the charging system if it weren't for your advice, heh.
Thank you Eric for saving us (and my brother's car) once more ^-^ Your videos have been an invaluable resource over the years, and I can't help but recommend your channels (yes, ETCG1 also) anytime someone I know is having car troubles- or even for general car advice :3

The started wrong. (it gave me the same problem before I even messed with the starter) then when I drove it died on me turning on the heater. i was at the drive through of McDonalds. Got it to turn and it died at my house. I charge the batter try to bypass the starter it didn't work for a while, then it crank. I turn on the headlight to see the cluster and it just died. I know I got a short some where tested the fuse and starter wires even the batter cables. It had history of bad electrical

I got a pontiac grand am replaced steering pump ran good for 2 days after it didn't turn on. starter didnt even click. I tested the starter and it passed, battery was dead and it only crank when it wants to with other batteries. so I change the alternator cuz it killed my battery, and got a new battery. It started a few time when I messed with the cables from the starter. And thought it was ignition. I replaced it and i still had the same problem. Then it started normally when I saw I connected

Nice video Eric. Electrical issue with 95 Olds Cutlass Supreme where power keeps dying. Symptoms: lights dim, needle gauges bounce, then dead. Car starts sometimes & sometime car starts without cranking noise. Mechanic said starter fine; alternator was to blame & low battery due to bad alternator but after those replaced, problem continues. He cant find anything wrong despite continued problem. Aside from finding another mechanic, what should I do? What is causing this? Bad CPU? :(

Eric I have a problem with my lincoln continental. My air conditioning quit, and my turn signals quit and so did my auto windows, I'm not sure if I still had lights or not but inside the car the only thing that continued to work was the on dash display. The car still drove and ran alright and I made it home alright but when I opened the hood the battery looked like it had run over. Could this be my alternator gone bad. Thanks Cat

I would stay you have a computer glitch. ABS just means the anti-lock brakes and the diagnostic computer has found a glitch in the system. Depending on were you live you can goto your local automotive store and they can do a test for you usually for free to find the cause of the glitch. Or you can go to your mechanic and have him/her find the issue and fix it for you. I would say its safe to drive your car.

Hey Eric, longtime fan, finally subbed. You do great videos man. You explain things very intuitively and humbly. I'm upgrading the grounds on my Chevy Silverado and my RSX Type S. What I've got sorted thus far is:
+ Battery to starter solenoid and/or alternator
    - Battery to block
    Block to firewall
    Firewall to frame
    Additional grounds:
    Taillights
    Stereo
    Dash
    Bed to frame
    Misc additional components
    Looking good so far?

Is there any concern about connecting copper wires to aluminum or steel connections? In home circuitry, that's a 'no-no', because of an electrolytic reaction when exposed to water.
