I’ve been going through hell trying to find the electrical issue with my 2017 mustang and knew NOTHING about electricity so I’ve watched hundreds of UA-cam videos and this is the only one I was able to grasp and now I understand how electricity works. Thank you
Glad it helped, and if you really want to show deep appreciation,,,,🤔,,you can transfer some 'funds' into Pete's account, and a few to me for the suggestion 🙂 Lol
Thank you, you didn't use the water in a hose analogy and for the first time in my life I understand what is being explained, and that's saying something, I'm 59. Always wanted to understand but never could so I avoided it, not anymore. Wow, really man, thanks for explaining in a way that I finally get it.
From this point,I'm not studying with any other trainer on line but u PETE,ur name deserves all cap letters,ur training exercises incorporated with my critical thinking,is gonna advance my skills to the next level, long before my instructor anticipated, thank u much.
I'm an Automotive Technology Student, Just got my Fluke 88V. Im very motivated with my new DVOM, Im striving towards becoming an ASE Certified Electrical Diagnostic Technician. Your videos are a great supplement to what I have learned In school. Strengthening my Electrical Foundation. Thank you for sharing the knowledge. You sir have gained a subscriber.
Absolutely brilliant! I graduated from Lincoln Tech for automotives in Indianapolis,In. and those instructors never came close to how much you explained and the way you explained it. A weight has been lifted off my shoulders. U R one heck of a teacher!
Man thank you so much! Seriously helped me get my head wrapped around the actual troubleshooting process so much better than I've ever understood it before! You have a gift for explaining things in comprehensible terms.
I had a bad fault on my truck. The garage weren’t interested in taking it on because it’s a old truck, which is really bad news for me as it’s useless without headlights. After watching your videos several times I made a small circuit like you said & decided to have a go at it, I voltage drop tested my headlights and found 12v on every wire except on one - sure enough I opened the looms with that wire in and found a green crusty repair someone had done years ago- once I joined it properly MY HEADLIGHTS WORK!! I’m so happy Thankyou so much for uploading this has given me the confidence to fix something I would never have attempted without
Thank you! This course one lesson would have cost me a couple hundred dollars from a university. You are a great teacher, and you have improved my life. Thank you, thank you! God bless you.
I've watched so many electrical diagnosis videos, and your teaching is by far the best. I've watched this several times and finally I'm understanding. Thanks Pete. 😊
the best intro for automotive electrical work and troubleshooting. hands down. excellent style. perfect reiteration of important points. i've been working with electrical systems in construction forever....and you nailed it.
Well made, very informative and well explained videos! I am hooked on your “the trainer” series! Almost like a technical institute on UA-cam! Cant beat years of experience! Thank you and everyone that helps make all these videos!
I had 2 yrs. of electronics many years ago, this was a great /practical refresher. And as a private pilot, you pose a valid analogy (only had 15hrs. of instrument trn). Thank you Sir! Great job! Down to earth (pun) humble, knowledgeable presentation. Now back to learning my Pico 4425.
At 26:45 I was wondering how the alternator case (which should be grounded) could be "hot" at 11.5 volts with the DMM positive lead on it and the negative lead on the negative post of the battery - the answer is in video #84 in case anyone else had the same question...
Your simply the best out there Pete thanks so so much for the wealth of your experience, in showing others.I was doing a job today and had one of them where the heck am I here on the fix I was looking for and had one of them mental melt downs lol. (smiles) and for the life of me do you think I could get my thoughts back together did not happen as as my grandfather once told me Dave just walk away for a half hour and come back to it. But today I just said iam coming back tomorrow (Is my car) That said your video brought it right back to me in your couple of videos. Thanks Pete once again (always watch your videos I have learned all of my automotive, electrical through your channel ,I have never looked back and we are talking about quite a few years now (coming up dec 25th iLL BE CLIMBING ANOTHER YEAR (SMILES) YEAH HITTING THAT 61 MARK AND STILL PUSHING THROUGH. AWESOME VIDEOS LIKE USUAL PETE.
So voltage is less because resistance is greater, and "the only real resistance is the load" is my new mantra. Thanks for the video, I hope UK circuits are the same 🙂🇬🇧
That was great,ur gonna make me a great technician,Wayne, Stratford automotive tech student, straight from the trenches of Baltimore, but passionate about my studies, love ur video, the way u break things down, please keep them coming.
It is very easy to understand and informational video. Thank you for explaining circuit fundamentals. If you know the basics, you can diagnose most electrical circuits.
Great teacher ☺️.. I have a p0420+ Dtc B1133 on a 2009 sx4 that's been plaguing me for months.. been to various garages whom all different diagnostics and prescriptions.. last week I realized the engine wasn't grounded!!! So my despite my inexperience in mechanics I'm taking matters into my own hands to try to find the issues before winter comes. I keep thinking the issue might be electric rather than mechanical since when I reset the battery+ecu the car runs great (for over 60kms) until I park it and restart. Very useful channel thank you 🤗
Hopefully you see this someday. What a great video. The nuanced detail in the explanation between testing methods at the end, ties together a concept in electrical troubleshooting overlooked by so many instructors. That is answering g that uh oh moment question when you get a reading and think ok now what
Excellent tutorial. I wasn't aware it was possible to see voltage on only one side of the circuit, or as you said: test between the battery positive and the load positive. It doesn't make sense to me, but I believe you. I'll have to try it out. Of course, this technique is as you say a dynamic test, opposite of a static continuity test which is how I'm used to doing it.
I own a 05’ Duramax and had electrical issues and cost me over $15,000 due to these diesel shops not knowing enough about electrical diagnostics. Yes they knew all the basics but to find a shirt at exactly the right time is a true art or genius. A man that has mastered this is worth 200k a year easily and can ask for this salary and will get it as long as he can prove he is truly an electrical diagnostics expert. I have heard of one guy in Houston but I would be surprised if there are 50 in the US. They are that rare. It’s like this. Maoist mechanics can do any type of work to a car yet very few know true diagnostics once things get complicated. This is why finding a truly genius mechanic is a very good find
Oh man, this is so awesome. My only question at the end of the video was if I am testing the positive side, where does my negative lead go? You answered it! Man this was clear. You have really inspired me. I am going to run a horn issue down in my van...I could just substitute a relay and other parts from a junk van, to see if that clears it up, but I would rather go thru the steps and do it your way. And the factory shop manual tells me how to run it down. The other thing..I have been getting interested in Hammond Organ repair-tube circuits. But I need this same skill to do that, too. What a complete detailed and well presented video. I try to watch one trainer a day. I am just a hobbyist mecahanic, and a music teacher and performer by trade, but I am seriously considering to working my way toward ASE certification. I am getting my Motor Age Training books tomorrow!
hey man, ima give you a thumbs up and a comment because you actually taught me something new. I'm a licensed plumber so I'm pretty smart but dc car electrical knowledge has always been out of my grasp. I've got a bad electrical problem on my 87' Toyota Camry. i vowed to never take it too another mechanic after a power steering problem. long story short i paid them for "fixing it". Then had to fix it myself. So, armed with my new knowledge that you so graciously give me FOR FREE!!!!!!!! I'm going to attempt to fix again. Wish me luck and I'll let you know if I'm successful. If I am I'm going to find a way to pay you, good sir.
This is kinda like learning another language. I've always struggled with any new info in which I lacked the fundamentals, or basic definitions of well used terminology. It reminds me of why I rarely ask driving directions from strangers. They usually start with the assumption that you already know where you are and the names of streets etc. This is why there are so few effective educators out there. They lack a basic empathic understanding of the need to constantly bring the student back through the fundamentals. Of course this can be tedious for the trainer, which is where the passion for teaching comes in and provides the joy of witnessing the transformation of a student who starts to get it. Anyway, Thank you sir. You're a good teacher.

At 25:50 why isn't the first bulb lit? Shouldn't both bulbs be dim as each would be using +/- 6 volts?
Excellent presentation. Very clear and super informative. Even I grasped most of it. I'll watch it again (and again) and start testing a few circuits.
So voltage is less because resistance is greater, and "the only real resistance is the load" is my new mantra.
