  • How have we built our autonomous driving technology to navigate the world safely? It comes down to three easy steps: Sense, Solve, and Go. Using a combination of lidar, camera, radar, and compute, the Waymo Driver can visualize the world, calculate what others may do, and proceed smoothly and safely, day and night.
    About Waymo:
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. With the Waymo Driver, we can improve the world’s mobility while saving thousands of lives.

They’re limited on what they can do. It’s why they have prechosen routes that are easy, times of day, weather conditions etc.
This technology will never work in all weather conditions.. so if it’s really foggy we all stay home? Rainy? Sun at a bad angle?

That's why I can't wait to see it arrive here in seattle. That way I'd like to get a chance to be one of the first ones to ride in one of those. And the reason why I say this is very simple. I think what's going to end up happening is that some of us blind people and the disabled will have to learn how to use the technology and to use their app to basically bring the car to us and then we can just get in it and go. All we have to do is put in the address where we need to go or put in the business name and it will basically take us to that business that we need to go to. If we need to go to McDonald's to go grab something to eat all I have to do is just say take me to McDonald's and it will tell me where the nearest McDonald's is and then after that it will just take me right straight there. No need to catch a bus or two. It will do it all in one fell swoop. Who knows it could also take me to my bank to make sure I can get the rent paid. As a matter of fact I just heard about it the other day that waymo is coming to Seattle. And it won't be long now before they start testing these cars here in the area. and hopefully what they will do is make sure these cars are not only tested in Seattle but in King county washington. So I think we better wait and see what happens until they put those things together.

This was a great video, but I wish they put this tech in a minibus like the Baidu Apolong II minibus or Polaris Gem (May Mobility's earlier model). That would help demonstrate a "minimally viable product" that could profitably scale while being helpful to urban problems of congestion and really moving the ball on environmental sustainability goals. They should work to improve and complement existing public transit models with automation, not enable more auto dependency and suburban sprawl. Ideally, AVs will soon allow for the redevelopment of overbuilt parking lots and garages to become affordable housing and mixed-use urban villages where daily needs can be accomplished with walking, biking, or micromobility.

    • @ryanlewiz
      @ryanlewiz Рік тому +1

It was a great video. Yes, let’s try navigating the urban landscapes of the United States in a golf cart that has a top speed of 24mph. As for your Red ignorance, let’s stick with that thought but knock it down to about 21mph. You plan to have people patiently wait their turn to reach a destination too I take it? Or are you just asking for fixed routes that remain extremely distant from where people actually work and live? You can shove your micro-village pipe dream as people are delivered to their car. You are aware the city depicted is San Francisco correct? Are you familiar with the other market Waymo is operating in? Chandler, Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert, Arizona at 21-24mph would result in death. If you are not lucky enough to be plowed into during your first 17 miles; suicidal ideations seem likely.
There will be no way to reach the suburbs or city efficiently, safely or profitably (zero demand). Micromobility! Meeting daily NEEDS is all? Aren’t you just a gem?! You believe Americans motivation for transportation is ‘driven’ by NEEDS. Above average composition there sir….completely asinine reasoning. AVs will lower congestion significantly due to drivers with similar reasoning being removed. I thoroughly enjoyed my year abroad in Copenhagen, but there is absolutely nothing micro about the United States. (Also it only takes one glance at a headshot to quickly denounce the likelihood of you ever riding a bike….anywhere)

if it's a proper blizzard the recommendation is not to go out and taxi services r reduced
.....that said if there is visibility for the cameras and radar and lidar there is no reason they couldn't make it work .....but they want to be extra safe while developing it since there is no one behind the wheel
.....the important part is cars without drivers already exist and work today ....it's not something in the future anymore

    • @communityband1

I'm not sure there's any reason the service would have to go offline just because the car isn't driving itself. Human drivers can still be made available to drive on days where conditions like this are expected. Today we already see that Waymo employs human drivers for test driving and even to be in the vehicles when weather conditions make things more uncertain. This is one of the reasons self-driving cars work better as a service right now than they do for private ownership. Services can be flexible.

These co workers are not the smartest but they truly believed that these cars purpose was to spy in the areas of cities where there is known criminal activity.. Of course this crazy sounding but watching this video made me even more confused. First of all they look completely automated and I am sure they are but 100% of the times I saw them there was someone (driver?) sitting in the front seat. Even more strange I have never seen anyone sitting in the back seat. Never have I seen one driving alone. Always always always they drive around with one passenger only and that passenger I'd always in the driver seat.

I just got back from Tempe and they definitely are real lol. At first I was so creeped out but then I was intrigued to try if. I used them to get around to restaurants and my hotel. It was SOOOO COOL! And it was incredible how safe it was. I was impressed beyond belief!

And they do drive alone! I think there are some that have a driver to assist maybe for different routes? But they were driving by themselves!!

Let's think, are you a driver. And you see in front of you a lorry, loaded with big (but lightweight) styrofoam boards. Or paper sheets. Suddenly, one board (or sheet) is blown by the wind and is close to landing on your bonnet. As a human driver, you are sure that board is not made of concrete, granite, or steel. Thus, you can ignore it. But, how a robot knows that? He can hard brake / or hard turn, for no reason.. And the "obstacle" list can continue: a broken flag flying away above the street, a newspaper, a small dog running across... By the way, we know, after a ball or an air balloon rolls across the street, there are more chances for a small child to jump to catch it. We know that. The robot, knows??

Yes in those very specific scenarios a self driving car would probably do worse than your average driver. However how often do these types of situations happen? In my opinion almost never. I personally have never had this type of situation happen to me in my limited 4 years of driving experience. Now how many times do car accidents happen because of really stupid human error such as wrong way driving, texting while driving, drunk driving, people not using their blinker, people not checking their blind spots, road rage, etc. I think the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. If the point you’re making is I wouldn’t trust a computer to be my driver when i could drive safer myself than that’s valid.

A robot should know that paper sheets are not a threat it should apply hard braking for. After all, there is also tree leaf that can fly around and the car must understand that leaf is not a threat. So, in theory you can train it to identify patterns of flying objects. If an object falls straight down then most likely it can hurt the car and it must stop, but if an object flies around like a leaf then the car shouldn't be worried about it, unless it doesn't stick to one of its cameras or sensors.

Stopping when you don't necessarily need to is fine, though, isn't it? It's harder to swallow when it's technology, but self driving was already much safer than humans statistically even in it's infant stages.

You can see these cars driving around with no one at all in them here in Phoenix. I guess they're going to pick up the next rider. It looks strange seeing a car driving all by itself but it also looks great.

My biggest concern about Waymo is that does their business model make commercial sense? Waymo is competiting with normal taxi. I just don't see that it can compete with human taxi drivers with a 20K car within next 5 years. Sometimes within next 5 years, it needs to bring the cost down to equal or lower than a human driver with a 20K car in order to compete against normal taxi. Otherwise, it is just doing driverless taxi for the sake of driverless taxi. This will not sustain.
