I am a humble worker in the AI field. Many people have misunderstandings about Chinese AI and American AI. AI in China and the United States is different. The American AI route focuses on artistic creation and life services. China’s AI route focuses on industrial production. We can't tell yet which country has the better route. It can only be said that the two routes are different.

The US bases success on PATENTS, ie GREED. How many individual entities own their own little prize which they can extort everyone with. Its not the Chinese way. China will be fine, better than fine, a Golden Age is coming from the rise of China, an age in which humans can become so much better than those raised in fear, lack and division. Laughing my ass off, why don't explain that generative AI patents is just one small field of AI as a whole. They you throw in Hypersonics, and claims underwater drones and suddenly you leave much context out. You don't even have the best AI chips or GPUs needed to keep China in the race. Face it, China is falling behind in every way that matters.

AI models train from visual data for self driving. China has lots of surveillance data so this type of AI is not their biggest problem. They will have lots of problems with intelligent AI that can do other work. You need a mass amount of non-visusal data for this type of AI to train and learn about the world.

Western companies will flounder and fail because they are not willing to cut away the corruption and greed from their models and stop ripping off the people who provide them income. Western nations the same, you cant build high speed trains or new cities because the costs are all insane due to GREED. You cant compete with a nation which bases its efforts on community, people and sharing resources for the common good. Palki, I am Indian, but here you are wrong and China is already the winner in Ai and US has been playing catch that why they brought in carpet regulations, just check the number of patents filed every year by China vs US and I am embarrassed to say it but we are doing much worse in AI. Chat GPT is a like it or not doesn't have much real world applications, answering questions and writing text is the least they can do. Come to 3D model generation, texture creation, image upscaling, Chinese tools have had them for 3 years now. Just check out a Chinese software used in Architectural visualization called D5 render, it's 3 years old and west was just dabbling with midjourney at that point.

I read an interesting article recently about how most of the Chinese models require English input, because they're building off the West's open-source models. Meta's LLAMA models being the most popular. The author of the article who went to their big AI show that they do yearly noticed that a lot of the models when asked sensitive questions, actually start answering them, then cut it off half-way through. So the user can clearly see part of the censored answer before it gets censored. All of this is to say that if they want to effectively censor, they really need to have that in mind from the ground up. But Chinese people don't work like that, they take the work of others and build upon that for the sake of catching up to the completion as fast as possible, but their models will have flaws everywhere for doing so.

China might not have a flagship foundation model (or they do) but they come up with the lot of Ai models that are innovative. A lot of Ai engineers and infrastructure, they are far ahead.
On the other hand, India is losing the most crucial race. GenAi for most part is language models and reason it’s crucial is in the name. Imagine leveraging the Ai powers across the nation divided by language? Hands down, the biggest missed opportunity, but it isn’t late. Hope we get ahead.
