How Charles Martinet Changed Mario Forever

  • Charles Martinet has been voicing Mario for over twenty years, and he's pretty darn good at it. With the Super Mario Bros Movie proving a success and with Nintendo moving away from Martinet's work in Super Mario Bros Wonder and beyond, the man deserves a bit of extra attention.
As the beloved voice actor behind one of the most recognisable characters of all time steps back from the role that he defined, it's time to revisit how he got the role, and why his particular version of the character has stood the test of time when other versions of Mario have been all but forgotten.
Martinet tells a good story about how he got the role of Mario to start with. It's a solid underdog tale, with a beach bro turning up unannounced at an audition, and annoying everyone until they gave him a job.
Martinet insists that he had never heard of Mario before the audition, and this lack of familiarity with the character no doubt helped shape his particular take on Nintendo's mascot.
This just goes to show that it's better to do things your own way than copy what everyone else does.
In case you were wondering, that's why this video is a series of drawing timelapse clips rather than footage from Mario games. We've tried doing things the way everyone else does them. Now we're going back to doing things our own way.
    Lots of love,
    BretonStripes and Kotor

It's not easy, but we need to try. If we have passion and ambition, then we might get lucky, find the right people, and find a way to share that passion and ambition to the world. I hope I'll be able to do that someday.

@@MisteRRYouTuby Breton Stripes is wrong about one thing: Mario being depicted as a negative stereotype wasn't started by Bob Hoskins; that would be Walker Boone for the infamous SMB3 and SMW Cartoon, with the former having "Oh, Brother", an episode I'm pretty sure made fans hate Boone's depiction of Mario for that particular reason. In fact, Martinet, it was the very reason he didn't do that for Mario, because he already heard someone being mocked by a cynical comedian, so Martinet was doing this to avoid a similar problem the person experienced. Heck, I would argue that Martinet and Lou Albano share a similar mindset on how Mario should sound and behave: a fun Italian Man with a love for food and adventure. The "Cynical Smartass" persona would be moved to Wario, to fit with the "Bad Mario" motif it was already going with.
Also, the video failed to include the "Let's make a Pizza Pie together" shpeal that Martinet keeps reciting.

"Do things your own way rather than copying what has come before. You might not have the success of Charles Martinet, you'll have a lot more fun along the way."
    I couldn't agree more.
That's what the people behind the Illumination Mario movie and the SMB Wonder game were doing.
Despite the change in voice actors and direction overall, as well as mixed reception, they clearly had fun with these projects, including Martinet.
So long as we don't let bitterness about change get in the way, we can appreciate and enjoy more things more often!
Feel free to use that LAST line as a moral for your NEXT story...if you haven't already that is...😋

I only hope Charles left on his own terms, you know? Like, or wasn't just a corporate thing. And as much as Martinet was a voice in my childhood, I get the feeling he knows he's gotten up there in terms of age. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought, "Time to leave on a high note."

It's probably a combination of both. I'm sure that both sides sat down and discussed the future of the character since it's been pretty obvious in the past 10 years that Mario has gotten a case of "old man voice" compared to his earlier outings 20+ years ago. Because Charles isn't bitter or upset about the decision, he almost certainly knew his time was up and graciously stepped aside. This tells me that even if he didn't initiate the decision, he has no hard feelings.
