GPUs are actually way more resistant against shorted high-sides than CPUs. So there is always a way higher chance it actually survived. Recently i had a really challenging case on my bench where the the DrMOS was welded with a few board layers and it was necessary to dremel the short out of the board. After the restauration of the tracks and replacing all related DrMOS it turned out the GPU is working absolutely fine, like from factory.

Hello Sorin! On my laptop (Lenovo Legion Y720) the HDMI/DPort port is only driven by the Nvidia video chip, the integrated Intel can only show picture on the built in screen. Learned it when i replaced the old battery to a identical looking one and the laptop kept shutting down when HDMI was connected/game started. The problem was the BMS in the new battery it was only able to deliver 5 amps while the original did 9.

If you measure voltage (mV) across coil while applying power supply to find a short you can exactly find one that is under load and a co0rresponding mosfet is dead.

Hello, I bought MSI Gaming laptop 4 years ago, bought the warranty for a year. After like 14 months, something on my GPU shorted out. It caused massive BSOD crashes somehow even after disabling GPU in device manager. I sent it to MSI Tech Center in my country, explained to them to inspect my GPU because it's not working properly and they sent it back with a lovely word "Repaired" One advice for people reading this comment? If you want to game, buy PC, not a laptop. And definitely not MSI, if not overheating then shortening chips/mosfets.

great video as usual , but i have a question why they do not design power supply such that if the control chip detect over voltage situation due to shorted high side mosfet it also energize the low side mosfet to create a dead short and save the cpu ( in this case the charger will probably cut out due to very low resistance short)

  • @pp3v42_g3h

Why don't you use your own test SSD? I have a sata and PCI-e one and planning to get an external USB one too. Way faster than having the customer test it or ask for the password and have problems later.
Multi phase VRM high side shorts can kill GPUs, but in my experience they are way more likely to survive than CPUs.

Hot hlue for hinges is not the best solution. Use 2 component epo compound. And clean hinges with air and loosen hinge nuts a bit.
Msi has not learned since.. cx620 had same kind of issues with hinges and all theze gamings are even worse.. hinges have so little supporting material, sometines i have to use soldering iron to fix the base to its place before using epo.. yesterday had to repair sony vaio s rumbling cooling solution but first the case.

personally, would jump mosfet with a wire if power on one side only, to pass power on, if there is a short after the mosfet then i look at inductors that should be always powered on at the rail and not to ground, if grounded that's the short issue

    • @alexg9155
      @alexg9155 Рік тому

The main power rail should have infinite, or very very high resistance to ground, generally infinite, as you see at the end of the video when Sorin is measuring it again.
Other power rails are different however, I think the power rail for GDDR RAM is 40-60Ohm for example, while Vcore is just a few Ohms or even less than one Ohm.
This is why it's important to know what rail you're looking at. If you're mistaking vcore for the main power rail you will be looking for a short that simply isn't there!

Hi Sorin! Tested your method with hot glue for hinges. I dont know... its isnt holding... dont know why. may be because all stands were broken. By the way did you know that hot glue is very easy to remove with alcohol? few drops and its just pops out of a surface! So i made it my way: covered hinges with capton tape, mounted bolts and nuts, soldered peace of rigid wire to the nuts, filledarea with overheated hot glue and sadwithed all that. Now its like new, you can unmount hinge and nuts are firmly holding its places.

its quite simple......there is no "gaming laptop" on the market that can handle to amount or powerdraw/heat over a long peroid of time!
to small, to hot, too much generated heat on a small surface.
Its like a small city car, with a v8 engine! you can drive few ours with this, but in longterm, it will not last long!
if u want a "Gaming Pc" use at least a ITX CASE and usual ITX Parts!
Consider, good Mainboards has a 14 or 20 Phase Vcore.
Laptops has just 4 maybe 6!
it cant go well in long term

light games can also maybe make the gpu go 100% stress if no fps limit settings are in place
is not that hard to learn some basics of how to monitor and how to set settings for less stress and heat
for example lower temps and and stress in games just by limiting the fps and resolution and quality settings and power settings
maybe an example for this video will go like this
    so as a speculation example
maybe now the gpu can only do around 50% usage at max core clock speed and needs to be limited depending from app to app
    also
light games can also maybe make the gpu go 100% stress if no fps limit settings are in place
    also
even on hard games the gpu can stay at around 50% and it can maybe be ok
    also
100% usage at more less core clock speed is not really maximum stress
    also
games tend to chaotically stress the gpu depending on the complexity of the scene as some levels may be light and some may be heavy
    also
this example is more of a speculation for the video as of how stuff maybe correlates more or less

Good luck getting an actual working GPU or CPU for this. They're not cheap and you have no idea if it's actually good or not. It's not worth the risk and possibly losing your money because Aliexpress decides to side with the seller and you also get no refund.

@JustInspired Fallout fine but the thing is we should make a problem with msi nvidea on those big companies bcz of them they are not selling gpus and cpus spare parts and the laptop is not functioning mor than 1 year

It makes me sick as an IT Security Tech is that people complain when you clean their laptop during repair. I get alot of dirty/filthy laptops in for basic upgrades or diagnostics and i refuse to work on them until they are clean. I use a microfiber cloth with just plain water to completely clean the unit before i begin my repairs. I have NOT gotten a complaint yet but if i do, i'll tell them that i cleaned the laptop with items that will not cause ANY damage. I just can't work on a filthy laptop.

same like me, whenever I repair a desktop PC and it's full of dust and dirty
I always cleaned it first, at least with a blower

Just so that you can be as grossed-out as me, that flaky stuff that fell out of the keyboard and onto the screen... yeah that's skin flakes from the user.

My msi katana shorted.. It started with it just randomly shutting down and not turning on for hours i had to reset the battery for it to boot up again.. After maybe 1 week of this issue and just gave up and never booted back up so.. My guess is something shorted inside :(( oh well was lucky enough i had money to buy a new cyborg 15.. But it seems a lot of MSI laptops tend to short after 2 - 3 years of life

good grose... what disgusting people are out there, that doesn't even clean their shit before they send it out for repair.... man, i don't want to see that home where this thing is used. 10th gen isn't that old, how tf can you break this hinge so fast... just terrible...
But Sorin, the integrated Intel Graphics is in the CPU since Core i series started. It's not in the nothbridge anymore.
