I never took to the Alpinist, and while this wouldn't fit my tastes it does look better than it's predecessors. Appreciate the points you made here. Top notch as always.
It is not a PVD coating. It is a DLC coating, which is totally a different thing. Specify that cause its a day and night difference between the coating methods. Along with DLC, Seiko puts the diashiel so these black coating which dont fade or pick up scratches like PVD coated watch.
DLC is by definition a PVD coating, using carbon rather than a traditional metal.

Love it. Totally changes the Apanist to something completely different. I hate date complications because it just makes setting your watch a chore, but if I have to have one at least I can read it with the cyclops. Fun review

Damn that thing is cool but I wish they would’ve made it with the dial on the SPB117 and maybe the indices be lumed as well so it would pop even more.

just saying I got one in October, have worn it almost 24/7 since, showered slept ext. the coating is very scratch resistant and pretty solid. hasn't chipped, minor dents just form indentations in the coating. looks great on a black nato too, but I get why some people hate it.
I bought the 1959 re-imagined Alpinist a couple of months ago, and I’m still on that honeymoon phase… Can’t wear any other watch at all. But this stealth Alpinist has got my attention👀 Great video man!!!

Hey mate! Most watches that have cyclops…look like a cyclops, this watch has a dewdrop. I’ve actually had people ask me if I had a drop of rain on my watch! it’s elegant. It’s perfect and I love it.

I missed out on the SARB017 but love the SPB121. I agree the cyclops is a bit much but that green dial is what i fell for so it makes no sense for me to go for the blacked out version. Plenty of people will love it though. Good review

Same. Love the SPB121, but the cyclops really keeps it from being super clean. Same for the Night series. Seiko missed out again...
Thanks for the first look MWC!! I am thinking a Seiko 1959 Alipinist with fully lumed indices would be an interesting follow up to this offering. Only knock I have on this piece is what was mentioned, dial legibility if not looking dead on.

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR The cyclops is definitely a love it or hate it feature. I know folks have removed the candy bar cyclops from King Turtles because those were so polarizing. Not sure I would take a torch to a watch to do so.....might let a professional do it?

Maybe I'm missing something, so can anyone tell me what is the point of the inner rotating bezel with compass markings? I hope it's nothing to do with the old 'put the sun halfway between the hour hand and twelve, and the twelve will be due south' trick.
I know this goes agaisnt the stealth motif, but if those indices were matte white or silver, this would be near perfect

I don't know if the vintage tactical Alpinist really makes much sense, but it looks kind of cool. Would be perfect for the aging ninja who needs a bit of help reading the date while on a stealthy mission.
They’ve just done this to the 1965 re-creation to, they look really cool.
Love it. It seems like Seiko's answer of the PVD Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical but with a lot more going on. I bet it'll look awesome on a black ribbed nato!
I like the minty hands and the cyclops over a date complication is a plus for me!
We (Thailand) even got special edition of the Alpinist based on our legendary conservationist, but the price was like 1000 Pounds

The one with the cyclops on the date has the better SR35 mechanism. The one without the cyclops has the less reliable SR15 mechanism. The cyclops makes it look more like a bold Rolex. I got the one with the SR35. One of the most beautiful watches in the world.
I absolutely love my SPB117, but now seeing it in all PVD makes me appreciate the stainless steel even more. Not a fan of the Night Edition watches.

I was about to say it doesn't look like the bezel lines up properly (Seiko, what are you doing etc), then you said it was easy to knock!

For $1000, this just isn't my jam. Too many watches in the competition in that price range for me to pick a seiko...
That's getting too close to a Tudor 1926 or Longines for me to justify buying a pvd Seiko...
It’s the third (-ish) time I’ve watched this one, we’re off on a trip and I got a Doxa Clive for the trip but recently acquired a JP Alpinist gmt… I’m very torn as to which one to take… won’t be my sea-dweller or seamaster chrono… I’m leaning towards the gmt… any thoughts?
Looks cool, but I wonder if it will stay that after that PVD coating has had a few months to decide whether it wants to peace out.

I 100% agree Russell and think your wife nailed it. I also wish Seiko would stop putting cyclops windows on their SPB Alpinist range.
I have the glacier blue SPB197J1. The aesthetics are nicely put together, but it's too dressy to call it a field watch.
I think this PVD coated version is overdone, it uses cosmetics to appear utilitarian but falls short on substance. The SPB117 is better imo, an honest sports/field watch.

I have the Alpinist SARB017 (Green Dial Gold Indices in Stainless). I’m not a fan of the DLC coding even when it’s done well. I know it gives it that stealthy look but I’ve always found the DLC coating to scratch easily and even wear off on edges and corners. So a watch that looks tough but isn’t tough. I’m lucky enough to have a Rolex explorer and my Alpinist (on an Angus Jubilee bracelet) gets more wrist time… So I guess that means I like it more. Thanks for the great review!

I think the colour combination is nice. But if you already have the original model of the watch I don’t see the point to buy an extra one just because it’s black edition.
The Alpinist is my favourite watch in my collection. Not sure I'm loving the black version tbh, but I'll have to see it in the flesh first.
As a Seiko fan I am happy with the SARB 017and my original 1960s Alpinist, the all black stealth look is not for me, great video as always Russ matey but I agree with your wife where this watch is concerned.

It's a beautiful watch in that smoky coating but I can't stand that hour hand, my wife once pointed it looks like a ballsack and I can't unsee since. Love the channel, it's honest and hyperactive! It's a compliment _btw_

A special forces Seiko would be a Arni not an Alpinist that’s an iconic piece of model in this case Seiko Alpinist! Plus 5500 limited edition! Have a European Limited 3500 edition brand new 2 straps 1 blue leather with a clasp and a grey canvas with clasp anyone interested? Bought in November 2022 😉

Limited today and then not tomorrow when they release it again in a different box. I don’t mind the cyclops as it helps me see the date easily but the pvd puts me off.
I also wish Seiko would up their game a bit when it comes to movements. They don’t differentiate that much over the range when it comes to movements and a high beat movement would be nice for the slightly dearer models if they want to compete with Swiss brands.

Congrats on being the first to reveal this watch! The other night series are better. The red N indicator on the compass doesn't contrast well with the black and cyan at all. On the other hand, the red compliments well with the emerald green on the SPB121J1 because they're opposite of each other on the color wheel. I wouldn't spend an extra $150 or £150 on this, I am already happy with my slightly under retail 121!
Sigh…I suppose the fact that, like you, I already own the OG (017), has left me with this teeny-tiny chip on my shoulder regarding nearly every subsequent Alpinist release, amongst which this one moves me the least: stuff like the Cyclops is neither here-nor-there, but I don't care much for the dial texture, and I'm wondering aloud just *how* tough the PVD coating is. Not against Seiko trying out new (or new-ish) ideas, but this one isn't moving the needle for me. Good on you for getting hold of one to show, though!

The strap definitely lets it down, and agree with you, it cheapen's the watch. I reckon a nice dive rubber strap in black or as you said, "a nato strap" would add to the rugged field watch aesthetics.

I would love to get an Alpinist...any Alpinist, but I just can't get past the display back. Also, the compass needs a lock-down crown. Nice watch though, and a good video.

800 and some-odd pounds and get Harlex? Seiko is becoming more and more difficult to justify. If I wanted to buy something with a mineral crystal I would buy an Invicta. There's a 39.7 MM chronograph speedway in this color scheme for about $90.

I've never liked a pvd watch and this is no exception. From the bezel in it is great. I do like the dial. Maybe on a nato with a brushed titanium bezel it would get better.

Love the size, dial, hand colour and specs but personally would prefer a plain stainless steel bracelet with the black dial and bezel, I just can't go a black bracelet for some reason.

I really don't think the black series design fits the Alpinist. The other two look great though.
I had the Alpinist gold version which I gifted to my dad, it really suits him and his age and that made me happier than wearing it myself, it has a certain classiness to it. There are too many contradictions in the design of this watch to make it appealing, perhaps a black sunburst dial with more organic colouring would make it more harmonious plus a black leather or even rubber strap . It's kind of in a 'no man's land', there needs to be a marriage of traditional and modern watch making and technology. I think Seiko failed to pull this one off.
I quite like it, i dont like the alpinist too much, but with the black series i can see it rocking my wrist. Im a bit biased bc i have the samurai black series which i love! Just wish my samurai had the 6r35 as well, Dont mind the strap, its very good on its own and this bracelet looks sketchy except for the clasp. Soo for me overall nice peice but for that price idk..

The SPB201J Europe Exclusive (Mountain Sunset) from 2021 has a brushed, slight matte, grey dial (with mild sunburst under some light conditions).
Feel this dial is a little unusual compared to it.
Nonetheless, great review and showcase good sir!
