  • Viral evolution
    adenine, cytosine, uracil, guanine
    Darwinian evolution
    Species undergo random mutation
    Making most less fit
But making a few more fit
    Fit means compete, survive, reproduce
Natural selection will ‘select’ the more fit
Viruses usually become less virulent over time
    Increased virulence / transmissibility
    Mutations that increase transmissibility
    Mutations that can avoid antibodies
Mutations that can avoid vaccination defences

Think of each of us as a Petri dish. The more Petri dishes exposed to the virus, the more opportunities there are for genetic mutation. If fewer Petri dishes are exposed, there are fewer total viruses in existence, less replication, and therefore fewer mutations will arise. This is how social distancing, mask wearing, and lockdowns prevent mutations-there are fewer Petri dishes exposed to the virus.

Hi DJ, nice talk on viral biology. Just to be clear, high transmission/infection = higher virulence probability.
In the lab if you want to up viral virulence, you speed up the certainty of viral transmission.
When a virus has certain transmission, virulence goes up - eg, it has no need to worry about killing the host.
So in a viral pandemic it is worth keeping the number of infections down, to slow transmission, in order to lessen the risk of more virulent strains evolving.

My only downside on vax's is that they should not be over used for young children unless absolutely necessary. Their immune system is developing and different to a teenager/adult. Best to let kids get as dirty as possible, to get their immune system in tip top condition.

Peter A - I completely agree with your second point about children - very wise, and so true. But I can't embrace your first point about the mRNA vaccines, because the jury is still out on those until the the results are in (late 2022). I was reading through Moderna's website, and they refer to their mRNA product development, as an 'operating system' (quote)... able to receive 'Apps' (quote).... and upgrades. Sounds very much like the phone in my pocket, or windows on my PC! Whichever side of the fence individuals are on, regarding GMO, this is certainly a pivotal moment in humanity and our evolution into a new technological era.

So, even tho we are vaccinated, we are still at risk for contracting the new variants with, perhaps, a milder case. But, more importantly, we can be super spreaders of the new variants???? Is this correct? So my relief at being fully vaccinated and not a significant danger to others....well....that is dashed completely?

For a long time, I wondered as to how, with people seriously following the health department guidelines, the virus seems to keep on spreading anyway...like it has a "mind of its own." I kept asking, Why?
    Your explanation really helps.
There are people I know, who have quarantined this past year, always ventilate their apartment, wear masks, hand sanitizers; who make one little mistake: go out to do something, and end up in the hospital. It seems so unfair. Your diagrams showed how easy it is, to catch the mutated virus from breathing the air. How bad the result will be depends on whether the person is vaccinated (with immunity built up over several weeks)...or not vaccinated.

This is exactly why I started really paying attention to this virus when we first found out about it, and have had to explain this to so many people throughout this year who were so convinced that it could only become less virulent because "thats how viruses work". It is so nice for people with better platforms to explain it, and as always, you do a wonderful job!

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 3 роки тому +3

It’s a bad point for misunderstanding. The tendency towards less virulence might take decades or centuries to unfold. It’s better to think of there being an upper limit or ceiling to virulence. A virus that kills its host too quickly won’t be able to replicate and be transmitted for very long, and will burn itself out. However, a virus with a high rate of transmissibility has a higher virulence ceiling. With high transmissibility, there isn’t as much selective pressure on virulence.

Fred Chapman, There is an old saying here: If you get tired of the weather In Texas, don’t worry it is about to change. I have lived here my entire adult life after living in Europe in the early 60’s, the Far East in the early and mid 70’s and all over the states between. That saying is quite true. But this winter that shut much of the state down took the cake and tossed it out the window. In my household we were fortunate in that we had power but no water. Many did not have either. I had to get my 96 year old father in law as he had no power or water and his house was cooling rapidly with the temp outside at ~20 f. with 2 feet of snow and ice on the ground in central Texas. Fortunately I have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The high wind had drifted the snow to 4 feet on the empty highway. When I left to get him I didn’t know if I would make it. I was not scared, but worried about my family and just kept moving forward. I have lived through blizzard in a tent In Yosemite where I worked at the ski lodge. But this was bizarre. 2 inches of snow once every couple of years, yes but 2-4 feet with ice and high wind not in Austin. We had to collect snow and ice for the better part of the week for toilet and dishwashing. Then we had to boil the water for several days when it came back on. And we were the lucky ones. Sorry that got long quick.

Fred Chapman, Hi there, Fred. I was on the roof clearing branches and wet leaves off today for 3 hours, but will still take my D3. We have many huge trees in Austin and it is not very much like the rest of what people think of Texas in many ways. It is one of the greenest cities in the country. And that winter storm brought a lot of trees down. Huge trees come down everywhere, on houses, block streets. We first had an ice storm that coated every exposed surface. Then the wind came and the branches and huge oaks started falling and then power lines started outages the first night with the thick ice. Saturday the snow started with more wind and ice Sunday. Monday most of the State was shut down and nobody went to work for most of the week. Austin, Houston, Dallas and hundreds of small towns started losing power that first night with the ice. I have lived on a small island for five years and we would get hit by a couple powerful typhoons every typhoon season. I have forgotten most of them, but I and my family and many thousands actually millions will never forget about this winter. We are grateful to be able to tell the tale.
