Think of each of us as a Petri dish. The more Petri dishes exposed to the virus, the more opportunities there are for genetic mutation. If fewer Petri dishes are exposed, there are fewer total viruses in existence, less replication, and therefore fewer mutations will arise. This is how social distancing, mask wearing, and lockdowns prevent mutations-there are fewer Petri dishes exposed to the virus. For those unwilling to be vaccinated because they “don’t want to be a guinea pig”, they are unfortunately already part of nature’s experiment. They’re volunteering to be a guinea pig in the control group.

Hi DJ, nice talk on viral biology. Just to be clear, high transmission/infection = higher virulence probability. In the lab if you want to up viral virulence, you speed up the certainty of viral transmission. When a virus has certain transmission, virulence goes up - eg, it has no need to worry about killing the host. So in a viral pandemic it is worth keeping the number of infections down, to slow transmission, in order to lessen the risk of more virulent strains evolving.

Dear Dr. Campbell, Thank you for your clear and understandable explanation of how this virus is spreading. For a long time, I wondered as to how, with people seriously following the health department guidelines, the virus seems to keep on spreading anyway...like it has a "mind of its own." I kept asking, Why? Your explanation really helps. There are people I know, who have quarantined this past year, always ventilate their apartment, wear masks, hand sanitizers; who make one little mistake: go out to do something, and end up in the hospital. It seems so unfair. Your diagrams showed how easy it is, to catch the mutated virus from breathing the air. How bad the result will be depends on whether the person is vaccinated (with immunity built up over several weeks)...or not vaccinated.

Early in Texas. 1:56 am in Austin and 62 degrees Fahrenheit going to get up to the mid 80’s this first week of spring. Be summer probably next week. Better than the winter couple weeks back. My wife got her first jab a week ago and is fine. Hopefully get mine soon, been waiting awhile. So good to see the Doctor this early. Good day all.
Fred Chapman, There is an old saying here: If you get tired of the weather In Texas, don’t worry it is about to change. I have lived here my entire adult life after living in Europe in the early 60’s, the Far East in the early and mid 70’s and all over the states between. That saying is quite true. But this winter that shut much of the state down took the cake and tossed it out the window. In my household we were fortunate in that we had power but no water. Many did not have either. I had to get my 96 year old father in law as he had no power or water and his house was cooling rapidly with the temp outside at ~20 f. with 2 feet of snow and ice on the ground in central Texas. Fortunately I have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The high wind had drifted the snow to 4 feet on the empty highway. When I left to get him I didn’t know if I would make it. I was not scared, but worried about my family and just kept moving forward. I have lived through blizzard in a tent In Yosemite where I worked at the ski lodge. But this was bizarre. 2 inches of snow once every couple of years, yes but 2-4 feet with ice and high wind not in Austin. We had to collect snow and ice for the better part of the week for toilet and dishwashing. Then we had to boil the water for several days when it came back on. And we were the lucky ones. Sorry that got long quick.
@@Claytone-Records that's so interesting to hear from someone who went through that. It's better than getting it from the news. Hope everything settles down now and you can get some sunny vitimin d. All the best from England. 🏴🇺🇲
Fred Chapman, Hi there, Fred. I was on the roof clearing branches and wet leaves off today for 3 hours, but will still take my D3. We have many huge trees in Austin and it is not very much like the rest of what people think of Texas in many ways. It is one of the greenest cities in the country. And that winter storm brought a lot of trees down. Huge trees come down everywhere, on houses, block streets. We first had an ice storm that coated every exposed surface. Then the wind came and the branches and huge oaks started falling and then power lines started outages the first night with the thick ice. Saturday the snow started with more wind and ice Sunday. Monday most of the State was shut down and nobody went to work for most of the week. Austin, Houston, Dallas and hundreds of small towns started losing power that first night with the ice. I have lived on a small island for five years and we would get hit by a couple powerful typhoons every typhoon season. I have forgotten most of them, but I and my family and many thousands actually millions will never forget about this winter. We are grateful to be able to tell the tale.
Thank you for this. This is exactly why I started really paying attention to this virus when we first found out about it, and have had to explain this to so many people throughout this year who were so convinced that it could only become less virulent because "thats how viruses work". It is so nice for people with better platforms to explain it, and as always, you do a wonderful job!
It’s a bad point for misunderstanding. The tendency towards less virulence might take decades or centuries to unfold. It’s better to think of there being an upper limit or ceiling to virulence. A virus that kills its host too quickly won’t be able to replicate and be transmitted for very long, and will burn itself out. However, a virus with a high rate of transmissibility has a higher virulence ceiling. With high transmissibility, there isn’t as much selective pressure on virulence.
If I am understanding this, the variants may be an asymptomatic presence in a vaccinated person, who will then transmit this new variant to others. So, even tho we are vaccinated, we are still at risk for contracting the new variants with, perhaps, a milder case. But, more importantly, we can be super spreaders of the new variants???? Is this correct? So my relief at being fully vaccinated and not a significant danger to others....well....that is dashed completely?
Yes and at least one eminent scientist has warned the WHO about the possible dire consequences of that so they can't say they were not warned anf therefore should be held to account! Mass Vaccination in a Pandemic - Benefits versus Risks: Interview with Geert Vanden Bossche PhD, who is an internationally recognised vaccine developer, virologist, having worked as the head of the Vaccine Development Office at the German Centre for Infection Research. Coordinated Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation’s , He believes he is now morally obligated to put his professional reputation on the line to get this scientific information out to the public, and has sent an open letter to the World Health Organisation highlighting the dangerous principle of mass using of a prophylactic vaccine that does not 100% eliminate infection and transmission in the recipient whist still in the midst of a pandemic which is highly likely to create super vaccine resistant variants in the process . Dr. Campbell, when this pandemic is over (well, the virus controlled or eradicated anyway), I hope you'll continue doing these videos on other topics in medicine for the general public like this!
Please don't apologise for explaining the scientific parts in layman's terms. It is absolutely fascinating and you make it so easy to understand. These are the parts I like most in your talks.
Thank you for pointing out that in this case we probably won't see the virus become less dangerous. I've been asking this question all over the place and not receiving an answer so far. My idea has been all along that since SARS-COV-2 does most of it's damage *after* the viral replication phase it won't follow that pattern. Evolution influences that part of a lifespan up to the moment the offspring is independent. This year will be more difficult than last year. We'll see lots of variants winning the competition because they are more transmissive and they appear to be more dangerous as well. This is not the moment to let our guard down.
@@magnumpi28 Maybe. We'll see. But new vaccines will have to be produced in the same factories and they are already not up to the task of producing the first generation of vaccines in sufficient quantitites. I don't see the vaccination programs solving this problem any time soon. It's going to be the race between variants and vaccines for a while. The vaccines will cause variants to emerge and the vaccine factories won't keep up with the production of new vaccines and populations will receive a whole series of vaccines with unknown long term safety profiles. We need to keep our guard up and continue the basic self protection measures.
Man as been here thousands of years, we got to this point with little intervention, and we will weather any storm in front of us without meddling corporations, we have a immune system which is a wonderful mechanism and complex, but it finds a way to succeed, it needs feeding with the right vitamins and minerals, another complex but of machinery is the mitochondria another source of our survival, see we a like Swiss watches, mess around with them don't service them they could pack up, introduce concoctions into them it's all over, so let's stop and think and leave things alone, and maybe introduce a diet and lifestyle change, instead of plucking cures and concoctions out of the air..
@@spud7823 Yes I mostly agree with you. I'm in no hurry whatsoever to get any vaccine and my hunch is that they're going to do harm. However, mankind will survive but I would like myself and my friends and family to be ok as well, and all the people in the supply chain of my supermarket.
@@pandemichackingchannel9791 I agree, we all want to survive, don't you think exposure to any alleged viruss, will make us stronger and more immune, a survey on farmers and miners and other dirty jobs yielded surprise results some years ago, their immune systems were much superior, the farmers around me seem to go into their 90s, my farmer friend up the street does not even know there's a virus going around, he is 70 and still living in the 1800s not wet wipe in sight, ever heard of terrain theory, nobody talks about that, nobody knows it exists, immune systems need work on them, maybe we going in the wrong direction, I'm certainly doing the opposite, no colds or flu for over 5 years..

This topic seemed like the perfect opportunity to tackle what Geert Vanden Bosche raised in his open letter to the WHO. Why is Campbell avoiding doing a deep dive on this? Surely a great chance to dispel misinformation on this important topic? At the moment the internet seems awash with conspiracy theorists who believe Vanden Bosche is a nobody!? Yet what Campbell presents here pretty much backs up exactly what Vanden Bosche was saying - wholesale vaccination is a VERY slippery slope.
The overwhelming majority of mutations are “neutral”, that is, they have neither positive nor negative effects on the fitness of the organism. The statement that ”most mutations are deleterious” is untrue.
You are right. Mutations are happening all the time without being strongly positive or negative in general. . Same with bacteria. Antibiotics introduced decades ago are still be used today even if higher doses are needed due to resistance. A little scary but not at the panic level.
Thank you. There’s also the matter of long term tendency towards mildness (less virulence). What time scale are we talking? It’s logical that there is an upper limit or ceiling to virulence-viruses can’t spread and replicate if the host is killed too quickly. But increased transmissibility would raise that limit, no? It could be quite a long time before we see a “mild virus” if we try to wait it out.
@@MarcosElMalo2 In fast-killing viruses it happens rather quickly. It may be the cause why the first Ebola outbreaks had 90% fatality rates and now we are at 50% on average. But Covid is different because you spread it in the first days, before you get severely sick. There is no selective pressure against variants that kill you after you have spread it, only against variants that would kill you in the first days while you spread it.
Notice the use of deceptive language by the vested interests in keeping this going, "permanent pandemic" rather just just the standard endemic, can't have the idea that this virus will mutate past vacccinations and there is nothing that can be done about it so everyone might as well get on with living life again.
Thank you so much for the information! I asked a question in the comments the other day and this video explained everything. Thank you again for all your research and dedication!
I wish Dr. Campbell would answer this question as I've asked it a few times now.... Why can vaccination companies alter the vaccines for mutations WITHOUT doing a long exhaustive 3 phase double blind study to ensure their safety on humans like was needed for the initial vaccines? As someone who doesn't understand this stuff and learns it through your channel...the idea that companies can just change what they put into your body without extensive tests for safety and trials leading up to is concerning. But since you and others talk about this like its fine and normal makes me ask the question why that is.
It's basically just a minor "tweak" to the code so that the s protein produced by the vaccine matches the new mutant spike protein . It's normal in much the same way that the flu vaccine is tweaked every year to match the new strains.
@@bidentity69 These virus variants go through extremely minor tweaks and wreck havoc on the state of pandemic just because things were swapped or change on one or two of the sequences. Wouldn't these tweaks to the protein potentially have equally drastic effects on how the human body might respond to them?
@@rogerbabin8175 Why would they ? The " havoc wrought" is caused by the "live" virus carrying the s protein , not the protein itself. No active virus in the vaccine , as far as the immune system is concerned , just another foreign protein.
While in trials: "Speed it up, you're holding back"; Out of trials: "You took short cuts and inadequate testing". mRNA tech in development over 20 years, BTW.
They can't do full length trials because the virus mutates so fast. They may be able to tweek the vaccine but manufacturing and distribution will never catch up to the endless mutations and variants. That's why I think other treatments are a better solution. Or just protected the elderly and vulnerable. I think it's about time the government told the truth that we can't save everyone and let those willing to take the risk be allowed to get on with normal life.
I studied Immunology as part of my Clinical Science degree (I'm an Audiologist in the NHS) so your very clear, accessible explanations are really helpful in refreshing my recall of the topic. I have a question re: mutations. Are they really that random having now - across the world - detected the most prevalent/transmissible in 'pattern'? If so, might it be possible to computer model what might be the next wave of mutations and, if so, develop the next phase of vaccinations to head off the risk? I'm hypothesising here :-). I just feel like we are always chasing our tails and because - quite rightly - vaccinations and treatments need to go through rigorous safety/efficacy cycles, we are unlikely to completely become 'zero COVID' and this virus will become endemic as have so many before it. Of course I am hopeful that treatments and vaccines in combination, administered across the world, will mean we can, one day, see more normal life and travel happening as before.

What's your opinion on the vaccines?
@@maxmorris4562 As soon as you can get a jab, seize the opportunity. Any vax doesn't matter. The faster the rollout the better.
It's a big subject but I hope that answers your Q.
@@maxmorris4562 My opinion? I hope mine worked. Pfizer-BioNTech.
@@rodwallace6237 No worries. The mRNA vax's are exceptionally good. There's research ongoing to use them for curing cancer and other diseases. They are also the quickest to develop and modify to new strains.
My only downside on vax's is that they should not be over used for young children unless absolutely necessary. Their immune system is developing and different to a teenager/adult. Best to let kids get as dirty as possible, to get their immune system in tip top condition.
Peter A - I completely agree with your second point about children - very wise, and so true. But I can't embrace your first point about the mRNA vaccines, because the jury is still out on those until the the results are in (late 2022). I was reading through Moderna's website, and they refer to their mRNA product development, as an 'operating system' (quote)... able to receive 'Apps' (quote).... and upgrades. Sounds very much like the phone in my pocket, or windows on my PC! Whichever side of the fence individuals are on, regarding GMO, this is certainly a pivotal moment in humanity and our evolution into a new technological era.
Thanks for the update, you do help make some sense of all this. That is to say with an absence of political views.
How is this absent of politics?
@@PravinDahal basically no political view. If you look at the EU and vaccines esp the oxford one.. where they ..lets just say 'poo poo' it. @@jobearesto9746 Pharma politics exists and they decide how these agencies operate because they have them by the balls. AZ vaccine did it wrong by making the non-profit pledge, which is biting them on their asses now, because competitors who intend to make enormous profits are willing to invest some more on their PR budget, mostly to stain the much cheaper competition.
The nurse guy here is also held by the balls. Pharmaceuticals will immediately come after his UA-cam channel, his reputation and potentially his pension if he actually addresses this. So, he sidesteps it by saying "it's bizzare, I don't get it" or something to that effect... and keeps himself on their side by spinning everything to be pro-vaccine in general.
I believe that he believes what he says and I don't doubt his honesty... but if he wasn't held by his balls, I'm sure his beliefs would be more aligned with reality.
@@PravinDahal You actually have it somewhat backwards. Oxford originally was going to partner with Merck, a world-leading vaccine producer/distributor (and the originator of the technology Oxford is using). They however chose AstraZeneca who had very little experience instead because of the potential to earn more money in the long run with AZ (reportedly 6% royalties vs 1%). Another reason given was that Merck is an American company while AZ is a British company and they were worried about how that might impact deliveries to the UK.

Thank you Dr. Campbell, this was very informative, and easy to understand for regular folks like me. Great explanation of the very complex issue.
This video is worthy of a Royal Society Xmas lecture. Perfectly paced for my lay-person noggin. Superb, as always.

They will have booster shots, everything will be OK!

Actually the overwhelming majority of mutations break the virus. But that's inside a cell so we never see it.
Good Morning John Campbell and all
Just what I was looking for Thank you
Thank you so much for this video, great work
