Hey everybody! Today finally marks the release of “Immune - A Journey Into the Mysterious System that Keeps You Alive”. The book I've sorta started writing a decade ago! First we had to push the release back because of cargo trouble and then because so many of you pre-ordered that we didn’t have enough copies for the original launch day! I've been a doctor for more years than I care to remember, and this is, without doubt, the best explanation I've seen of how the immune system works. The hints about hypervariable regions, HLA antigens and genetic recombination are irresistible. I've always found the immune system to be utterly fascinating, and so I'm looking forward tremendously to reading the book - which I've just ordered. You guys are the best.
I like that I can watch these with my toddler sitting on my lap, and we both pay equal amounts of attention, cos we are both captivated by the illustrations (and me by how well you explain scientific concepts in simple terms).
We don’t deserve you, Kurzgesagt. -Incredibly educational -Content is broken down in an understandable way for all ages to get a grasp of -Impressive animation -Excellent narration _-For free_ People are supporting your work because you deserve it. Seriously.
So.... In other words. Not for free. If no one paid for it, kurzgesagt would have been forced to go on to try other things. Whether it's ad revenue, patreon, or merch, the channel exists because it is definitely not "free". People pay for it all the time 🙂 and I for one love that system. It means success is a function of quality.

I got the book today ❤ i love it! The pictures are so captivating, smells good and how did you know i prefer hardcovers! Ive graduated uni as a biomed with a strong passion for the immune system and cancer studying it ever since 2014 but decided to get this to show my support for all the great work you have done and educating so many millions of people and this is such a refreshing way to look at the immune system! I remember getting the usual textbooks and struggling struggling understand how it worked in some parts as there were no colored or any pictures to illustrate it in a way i understood it and i will say on your videos i can get lost with the similes of a metaphor and what youre trying to explain i will be honest, however I am happy you also explain alongside it the simile of the metaphor to what is actually called and how it functions. Please do write more, i would love to see one in hemato-oncoly & paraneoplastic syndromes or genetics and I'd happy buy and add it to my collection in a heartbeat! Needless to say i wish i had this book when i was starting or these videos available to me back then Much love, as always Philipp and keep up the great work! Mila👒
I recommend buying their book, Phillip has an amazing way of writing non-fiction into story-like joy. Best book I’ve ever read and absolutely amazing quality paper and cover. The illustrations are vibrant and clearly depict a picture of what’s going on for your everyday person who doesn’t know much about biology. Thankyou for your wonderful book Phillip, and all of your incredible videos. Thankyou to the whole Kurzgesagt team !
A macrophage is the common soldier. A neutrophil is a soldier who has gone crazy. A dendritic cell is an intelligence officer. Your complement system is the armed and unarmed civilians who lived at what is now a battlefield. A T-Cell is a tootsie roll you ate that restocked you on energy. A B-Cell is the shedded blood that reacts with the dirt on the field, making thick mud. And last but not least, antibodies are the thick mud on the battlefield, slowing down the enemy.
I'm completely and utterly blown away with how they've taken such an incredibly complex topic and break it down in a video that is easy to follow and understand. How in the world did you manage this in under 12 minutes!?!? Wish I had stuff like this available when I was in junior/high school. Mega props to the writers and graphics team!
It's not enough to fully understand it all but it sure is enough to wake up your curiousity enough to want to look for more info on the same topic. It's also just great finding stuff like this because they give you a really good starting point.
@Jacko Sargs They LITERALLY repeat over and over that the real meat of the immune system would be too much to talk about in a single video. 🙄 That doesn’t change the fact that they way the disseminate information is far more effective and informative than most western entry level curriculum, especially on a minute for minute comparison.
They forgot to mention that the book is available on Audible and Steve Taylor (the speaker from the videos) is reading it. So it’s basically like a 10 hour Kurzgesagt audio edition.
Yes, very much so: apart from the lame populist and utterly erroneous comment thrown out there about convid killing 'millions of people'. Oh God help us.

As a doctor who's studied in detail and understands the Human Immune System throughly well, I'm surprised by how amazingly accurate this video is. I'll still be ordering the Immune book cause I just love this channel too much. As always, the illustrations were perfect. I can't possibly make use of the right words to appreciate the effort Kurzgesagt put in their videos to educate the masses, in the simplest way possible. Thank you, on behalf of every one watching and all your subscribers, for the top quality content you lot have been providing us over the years.
Would a doctory really say that he/she understands the human immune system? Researches are the producers of knowledge that doctors consume. And if anything coronavirus taught us, it is that the researchers themselves are cluless. So, how can any doctor thoroughly understand the human immune system?
Yes, they did a pretty reasonable job, in about 10 minutes, of something of great complexity that took me weeks and months to pick up during my PhD studies. Putting it in about one or sentences, I would say that the adaptive immune system teaches itself to recognise the body's own proteins shortly after birth. Therefore, logically, any other proteins encountered later on must necessarily be foreign, and treated accordingly.
This Channel and all the people who work on it every day deserve a lot more. Much appreciation from Brazil, and from a science lover and aspie here. Thank you
@UCrLTgqQUorxrzGnrv3UWQ9w you lived like one for AT least 1 and a half decade if you had a decently safe life so i don't get what people think when they say things like this. Its just a fucking dumb comment
I appreciate you guys at Kurzgesagt breaking down topics that are seemingly easy to understand, into ways that are very very chewable to the point that we could gain mastery over the topic just by focusing. So entertaining for youth and kids alike. Good work guys, thank you for these free contents that even tho it takes so much resources/efforts we can see the passion in it. :)
Real Shipmaster vibes. "We're outnumbered 3-to-1!" "Then it is a fair fight." its for a good reason its sponsored by the controlled narrative which is now the most profitable industry in the world and they are telling you that inanimate objects with no reproductive abilities or metabolic mechanisms can replicate faster than anything which is always been science fiction. The idea that its just one individual person doing these animations, journey and production is just part of the bait.
@@saromsalt1375 you should see their video about how they make their videos, while it might seem easy to you it is no where near as easy as you think it is to get this video out in the quality that you get, atleast be grateful or let others be grateful.
No honesty here. Gangs of six-year-old orphans can perfectly exist without adults. You do realize that the whole story about 18 years is a social construct right? You are "useful" as soon as you learn to walk and realize yourself as a separate person. And why should you be useful anyway and for what? For work, for sex? And adults do not become "useful", they stop listening to you and constantly argue with you. In fact, everything you said is nonsense.
We need a game in this art style where you play as a killer cell against procedurally generated viruses and giruses, with a skill tree based on the adaptive immune system.
I'm a public health student whose going into Epidemiology and the immune system has always been such an interesting topic for me. I pre-ordered the book as soon as I heard about it, and it's even being released on my birthday with this wonderful video. To say I'm elated is an understatement
Would you say the book is accessible to people who don’t have a great understanding of biology? They say the book is as comprehensible as the videos and I’m wondering if that’s true. Though an epidemiology student might not be the best person to ask if it’s easy to understand 😅
I've got the book and I love it! Knowledge is power, particularly inside your own body. INMUNE is the basis I use to practice "Reverse Hypochondria" and it woks like a charm!: almost 50 years old and in the eyes of my boss at work I am as good as "never sick", which is great at work, at home and everywhere! Thank you, Herr Dettmer and thank you Kurzgesagt! 😊
I love how the intro of kurzgesagt keeps changing just slightly. It’s like a way to show just how much care they put in every second of the video. Love the dedication and detail you have into every project, keep up the good work!

Never heard of this channel, not even once. Grabbed my attention and i started watching this video. Finished the video and ordered the book directly after. Not even a second thought, the video was amazing and I'm expecting great things from the book, can't wait to read it to my daughter
take a look at other topics kurzgesagt covers. They are always this good at breaking topics down to their core and explain with clever analogies. Sprinkle some amazing art and humour on top and you got a typical kurzgesagt video.
There were tons that came before - maybe with less child-friendly animation. I don't watch TV anymore, so I don't know if there's still anything alike on TV like back then. Let's see how effective this video was. Name 3 things you've learned.
@@googleuser9383 - Proteins are the building blocks to diseases, with billions of proteins there are billions of possible diseases - Cells in our body reorganise their genetic code in order to be prepared to detect all these possible diseases - We have this organ above our heart that specifically checks these cells that they wont attack our own body, only 98% make it through - Extra just becuz i remembered it: our body makes a perfect ecosystem and habitat for diseases to live in, many of which are harmless except a few that mutate and evolve to harm our body Thats all the new things that I got from this video in only 1 viewing :) Thank you for asking as recalling information that you've learnt through questions is a great way to better remember things better
Many people including me have autoimmune diseases. For example I have Ankylosing spondylitis, but it could be anything - Rheumatiod Arthritis, Crohn's Disease, ... Could you find the time to make a video about the AUTOIMMUNE? Perhaps there is a connection between "Murder University" and a "bug in the curicullum"... I would really like to better understand, what is happening to me and why, as well as for all the other folks. How can my own body attack me? Btw. Absolutely stunning videos!!! Thank you so much, you have no idea what you do for us all... :))))

I graduated as a doctor in March this year and have since been quite busy trying to play my part in the COVID-19 pandemic. I recieved my copy a few days ago and just read through the first few chapters of the book. I must say that it's been an amazing read so far! It is (much like your videos) written in a way that makes it both very exciting/fascinating, yet also manages to maintain a very high level of accuracy even though subjects are being simplified a little in order to make them more accessible to more people. Really impressive and I can't wait to read more in the coming days! Cheers!
Speaking realistically, do you think that vaccinating against the virus if you have a robust immune system could compromise your already functioning defenses to make you weaker when resisting getting sick with the varuz..? Also what's your stance overall about natural immunity as a whole, in this case, to the varuz..?
@@DarkRipper117 I'm a medical student, so maybe I can answer. Vaccinating if you have a robust immune system will not make you more susceptible to the virus. I can only think of one virus (Dengue) where antibodies against it make you susceptible to a different kind of the same virus, but it's not SARS-CoV-2 and there's no vaccine against it anyway. Vaccination induces natural immunity. Artificial immunity does exist (its called passive immunization), in it antibodies are injected in you (for example in a tetanus shot) and your immune system does not make its own antibodies. In vaccination, only the invader is fake, the antibodies are made by your body and are completely natural.

As an immunologist, I cannot thank you enough for this. For the first time, I can enjoy these concepts in peace without worrying about the details of V(D)J recombination and all the signalling pathways!
Damn, I'm an immunology student, and VDJ recombination is making my head explode at some (most) times. That and complement, MHC functions, and the production of antibodies...
I am doing my PhD in immunology. All of my colleagues can describe you how V(D)J recombination works but no one remembers the details anymore and that’s okay you will forget it too. What matters is to understand the concepts very well and that requires learning the details first
I'm absolutely hoping to get this book for Christmas. This channel's work on all of the immune system topics it's covered so far has been _amazing._ Wonderful, easy-to-understand explanations with phenomenal graphics, well-ordered presentations that are easy to follow without getting lost -- it's a guarantee that the book will be just as fantastic. I _really_ look forward to reading it!
It's a sentiment which has been expressed before: "We are, each of us, a multitude." (Carl Sagan) "While our [microscopic] fellow travelers may not inspire our love, we at least have the consolation of knowing that we are never completely alone." (National Geographic Film, _The Invisible World_ ) Another approximate quote, and I can't remember the source: "You are their entire universe."
I'm a biologist and a teacher myself, and so naturally I spent the entire video ready to cringe at fallacies, oversimplifications and important omissions, and I found... none at all. This is a really good video, and I am very likely to show it (up to the ad part) and/or link it to my students in the future. Thank you!
They're also pretty good about stating when they are making simplifications, which is good because sometimes people can walk away with a simple model and have the illusion of knowledge.
The statement "covid-19 killed millions" - is highly inaccurate at best. The health officials in US, Italy and other countries actually admitted that there were "generous" in categorizing cases as "covid deaths". Not considering comorbidities. Read the article of Bel Mooney about her father's case (my dad died from chronic ilness yet he is officially...). I personally know 3 cases in different countries when medics tried to falsify death certificate of cancer and heart patients as covid.
@@antoniocerutti265 so the dad lived with the chronic illnesses and survived till he got covid.. thats still valid as covid, dude. diseases can't always be separated neatly.

In vaccination, only the invader is fake, the antibodies are made by your body and are completely natural.

i've been listening to the audio book on spotify for the last few days, and i love it so so much that Steve is the one narrating the book.
As someone who has watched kurzgesagt since the very beginning it's incredible how much they've improved on just about everything, the animation is simply beautiful.
Too bad they're reciclying content and putting it behind paywall.

@UCJW39B295kUGjJDa3-ExLXg shut the fuck up, if you think that the new immune system series is the same as the old ones it's just no true this videos are much better than their previous videos about the topic and they are genuinely interesting and explore more obscure things about the immune system and if you are talking about the book and this series just... no like the book goes into much more detail while the videos are much more sumarized/simplified so they are not hour long videos, wich isn't a bad thing for me personally i find this videos great because they are short, fun and interesting.

As an immunologist, I cannot thank you enough for this. For the first time, I can enjoy these concepts in peace without worrying about the details of V(D)J recombination and all the signalling pathways!

This is a really good video, and I am very likely to show it (up to the ad part) and/or link it to my students in the future. Thank you!
They're also pretty good about stating when they are making simplifications, which is good because sometimes people can walk away with a simple model and have the illusion of knowledge.
Obviously this is the first time that you have watched a Kurzgesagt-In a nutshell video
