honestly he gave me bad vibes every since he dunked on (read: subtly put down) makoto in their first interaction when she was clearly just insecure and troubled by people's expectations. He just seemed very prideful and fake and it made me hate every word that came out of his mouth. Any instance he dropped his facade was appreciated, but there just wasnt enough of it in the original. royal akechi on the other hand is a treasure and I would take his incessant screaming and cackling over that condescending smile any day

The localisation team may have caused this a little, making a lot of Akechi's lines sarcastic as well because it is funny and that's the style of Western humour, but the voice acting director must have read it as a signal to go absolutely bonkers with the directing HAHA In EN translations Akechi's portrayed as a really sarcastic angry dude, while in JP he just seems so...tired. Tired of Maruki's shit lmfao. But not tired in a bad way, he's just so done with Maruki's shit and that kind of characterisation is what I believe was the original intention...but EN is of course amazing as well and both are executed properly by the voice actors. Voice actors are cool, man. But it goes to show that there really are nuances hard to portray in different languages, so it pushes me to learn Japanese more. Mischaracterisations like this happen everywhere, and it feels so wrong reading the dialogue and hearing the other language's voice actor portray it somewhat differently...it happened with Childe in Genshin a lot, and in rare moments with Akechi in Persona 5. i think the major difference very few people other than JP players notice, is third semester akechi switches his vocabulary up HARD. His "prince" self was overly formal, very respectful of everyone and seemed really innocent and fair, and every single trace of that is gone in the third semester, where he switches up how he refers to himself, how he calls others and how he even phrases things. In japanese it holds a lot more meaning to change his vocabulary like that compared to english, where the main difference is that he's a lot more blunt and angry.

Next time you should leave the original costumes for good boy Goro and psycho Goro, so that the difference is more immediate recognizable.
