I appreciate the videos in a series having a musical ident which shows that they belong together. But I'd be grateful if you would cut the music once your opening title sequence has finished and you start talking. In this video I kept skipping ahead in search of bits where you were talking and there was no music, but I never found any. I like what you filmed, but unfortunately your incessant music made this video unwatchable.
Great video, enjoying the new style music too. I've caught a train from platform 0 in Stockport - a few years back they used to use it for the Sheffield/ Nottingham trains too. Wonder if they stopped because it's such a pain to get to from the main platforms (especially now they've got the ticket barriers in the underpass)...
Great video, Jen! Your enthusiasm is infectious. I used platform 0 at Stockport yeeeears ago. I don't remember where I was going, I just remember being confused about it being "Platform 0" 🤣😂
Hi Jen, Blooming marvelous...I was there just a few weeks ago which I did let you know about, I was there to see some former colleagues close to Stockport and I was staying at a nice hotel in Davenport, just a short walk from the Station. We could have met up as I suggested but unfortunately you weren't around...so you missed out on a Costa Coffee at Manchester Piccadily...oh well... Good video all the same...thatred 199 bus looked new, very smart... Take care, Jon B.
Great video, Jen! I like this evolution of the "Visiting every station..." format. Don't think I've ever seen a level crossing like the one at Woodsmoor before!
Loving the map animations. Just like when you on google maps with the blue dot tracking. Brilliant Video Jen looking forward to the rest of the Buxton Line.
Transpennine Express services to Cleethorpes used to use Platform 0 in Stockport a lot more in years gone by, I made a few trips from there over to Sheffield (start from Levenshulme, change at Stockport) - but now they've been shifted over to Platform 1 - possibly so anyone getting off at Stockport has a slightly easier change rather then shlep it over to 0. Dove Holes also has what was the Trent Barton garage where the TransPeak buses were based (the ones that used to do Manchester - Nottingham via Buxton, Bakewell and Derby) - it's now run by High Peak and effectively TP2 and TP3 do the Buxton-Derby parts between them.
Another great video Jen 😘 I love the Manchester to Buxton line myself and the Hope Valley line too. My favourite two stations on the Buxton line are Chapel - en- le - Frith, and New Mills. If you go to New Mills Centre station, unless you already know this? But there's a hidden Railway tunnel which you can see from the bridge, and that used to like the Hayfield branch, which is also a walking route, and if your camera has got a good zoom lens like mine, there's a length of track still in the tunnel, but sadly no longer links up with the New Mills Centre line, and it's blocked up at the other end, but you can walk up to the tunnel portal at the other end which is start of the New Mills to Hayfield railway walk. And on the subject of Stockport platform 0, I remember catching a train from there back in 2018 back to Chesterfield (sadly where I live) anyway my lovely keep up the good work and looking forward already for the next part of the video 😃 Buxton is a lovely place to visit too, I catch the bus up there from Bakewell in Derbyshire every Sunday to go walking around the area. All the best from. Devon Mike.
Very nice video! I have a couple of extra comments, if it is OK. The trains used to go all the way from Buxton to Blackpool North in one run until just a couple of years ago (I used to go from Chapel to Manchester Oxford Road for Uni!) and since around 2016 or so during some track 'upgrades' it was split into Buxton to Manchester Piccadilly and then Hazel Grove to Blackpool North. I also think there was something to do with the trains not being upgraded, as the line from Hazel Grove to Buxton is still to this day not electrified. Which is why there is that really posh and beautiful train in the early section of the video when going around Davenport and then the poorer quality train is the one that makes the further flung journey beyond Hazel Grove. I do not know if there are any plans to actually electrify the route to allow more modern trains to run to Buxton - perhaps they do not think it is cost effective. The trains did also use to stop at Dove Holes every hour until just before the pandemic too. Everything was thrown into upheaval since then, and it looks as if since the trains have come back that they have taken the opportunity to cut the Dove Hole stop down to once every other hour. Which is a shame, especially because just before the pandemic things were actually moving towards a *half-hourly* service during the peak commute hours in the morning and afternoons. That sadly has stopped now. Dove Holes was (rather unfairly, I agree!) called the ugliest station back in the day because of the big and obvious scrap yard that is right next to the station and visible from the train, which does not leave a great impression! And it is also as much because of the busy A6 running through it with all of the quarry trucks constantly driving through. There was a long running campaign in the 1990s (that went on for multiple years) for a bypass for Dove Holes (similar to the bypass Chapel has) to divert especially some of the quarry traffic away from driving through the centre of the town, particularly with the primary school being located really close to the road, but it came to nothing sadly. I can attest to that hill in Chapel station as I have to walk it every morning for my commute! There is a direct cut through across the field on a small rocky path rather than having to walk up the winding road, although of course whenever it is rainy that turns to mud, so it is not recommended except during the Summer months!
Oh, also I *have* used platform 0 on occasions when going shopping in Stockport on Saturdays. Which as you say did get used for the Buxton line trains. Although the last time I went, I caught the train back to Chapel from platform 1, so it probably varies depending on how busy the station is.
I’ve travelled on that line many a times. I’ve got friends who live in Buxton and I’ll go visit 4/5 times a year. But most times my friends will pick me up from Macclesfield
My school is right in the middle of davenport and Woodsmoor, me and my friend used to go to Woodsmoor but due to harassment at the level crossing from classmates we go to davenport occasionally now as it’s the same stock but less annoying people
its amazing to see Stockport again as i spent some time there and filmed some trains there while i was travelling from Birmingham to Preston back in September but lost out on a Northern class 331 ride to Preston from Stockport as my train got cancelled & i love stockport station you get awesome veriety there also im loving Hazel Grove and Dove Holes brilliant vlog
Brilliant video Jen, Dove Holes certainly doesn't look ugly to me lol. I'll admit, even though the 150's are fine units to me, it would be nice to see the Buxton line electrified beyond Hazel Grove.
Yet another fantastic Vlog Jen I enjoyed watching as always and what amazing scenery there was along this route and the 199 buses do look half decent I look forward to watching part two of this adventure until then take care and stay safe and keep up the good work
Always used to catch the Buxton train from platform 0 at Stockport Station. I live in Chapel-en-le-Frith and would have totally fan-girled if I'd seen you. And, yes, the walk up to the station is a proper faff.
Platform 0 used to be used for half the Hazel Grove trains, and all the EMR trains over the Sheffield and beyond. It used to be a right pain if I'd *just* missed a train home in Manchester, picked up a fast train to Stockport landing me on P2, and then I'd get to Stockport and have 1-2 mins to change over to P0 to make it onto the one I'd missed!!
You always make super interesting videos Jen. I used to live in Stockport back in the 1980's. It was a very boring place but relatively crime free. Jen you should share some thought about your early life growing up. It would be very inspiring just like your exploration videos.
I spend a lot of time in Whaley Bridge so know this area very well but Piccadilly, Stockport, Davenport, Woodsmoor, Hazel Grove, Whaley Bridge and Buxton are the only stations on the line that I've used. Dove Holes was also part of a handful of stations that actually saw an increase in usage during the pandemic so I think an hourly service is probably justified ( more than e.g. Middlewood). It is a rather featureless village with its bus garage etc but I wouldn't consider it anywhere near the ugliest.
Great video, lovely place Dove Holes. There used to be a house with an enormous crack in the gable wall by the A6, coming from Buxton. Waiting to see if you mention John Axon in the next video.
Dove Holes is fairly nice. The bus garage gets in the way (although as a reformed bus spotter, I like bus garages!) and there is a surfeit of grey in the buildings, but, in general, rather nice!😅
From memory at Woodsmoor for vehicles wanting to go in the other direction there is a (2way) road which goes over a bridge, but it is just about as narrow as the level crossing route !
Well, this is the first video of yours I have watched and very enjoyable it was as well! Looking forward to more videos :) I’m sure Dove Holes is certainly more attractive than say, Peacehaven!
Is there a footpath only route on the way from Woodsmoor to Davenport , never found it (Google maps not that useful at times ( Both Stations + Hazel Grove could do with local stopping services to Sheffield from Stockport (Ideally onto Denton/Huddersfield for cheap cross pennine transport improvments using bi-modes if needed
Jen, There is a coffee place (the Starbucks trainer chain) that's a 4-5 minute walk from where I live but what's better to me is that there are two Mexican restaurants that are 4-5 and 8-9 minute walks from where I live. 😛 The local donut shop adds another minute walk from the coffee shop.
It may not be very pretty but it has a spectacular bonfire every November, with all profits going to Buxton Mountain Rescue to help find lost and injured walkers ❤
Would be a useful route into south manchester if the line went all the way to derby. train apps suggest from derby trains to stockport/manchester are best taken via sheffield then the reliable fast trans pennine or northern services to manchester and costs about £35, no wonder folk drive (though even that is not straightforward)
Awww, don't hate on the 150 sprinters, I love em, however if you are talking about Northerns 195 / 331 CAF's, those can burn in hell, especially the 195's (Got these on the Nottingham > Leeds service), and the god awful gearboxes, and don't even get me started on those nasty seats they have! 199 Skyline bus, used it a few times, when coming in on the Transpeak from Derby
With you on the 150's over the 195's. We have the 195's on the lincoln - leeds service too, with the very occasional 150 as a stand in. Much prefer the 150 if i'm honest, especially in the summer. The air conditioning in the 195's is pathetic and they're boiling hot unless you're stood directly under the vent in the vestibules. got on a 150 last week when it was 26 degrees and wished I had brought a jacket! I just wish the 150's didnt have that godawful 3+2 layout
I dont think Stockport (southwards for sure) considers itself a suburb of Manchester . It could probably bid for city status, the town hall is big enough. The real station in Stockport should really be called Edgeley ( Giving Stockport itself the area on the hill where the castle once was and the parish church still is. Edgeley really being the old A6 coaching in location, with the need to change horses after the long haul up the hill from the valley of the Mersey (though I do forget that the original route out of Stockport was not the straight line of Wellington Road, but the more curved that avoided the excess of gradiant - I think the castle area was also a Roman Fort , defending the river crossing and again a marching day change over from the Manchester castle/ fort 10 miles away (that is a short march but I think the ground was marshy and gave options to cover Ashton/Hyde etc along the old trolleybus routes as well as the main route direct to Manchester
Having grown up there, it's very definitely a Marmite thing. Some people are very proud of their Stopfordian status; others are quick to dissociate themselves and say they're from Manchester (like me).
@@katieastrophe Like many places Stockport was ruined by both the motorway + link roads building, plus the high rise tower blocks and loss of the terraced housing (though much remains but obviously some replacement with better size and insulated homes would have been useful in some areas over the tear down and leave grassed areas .
