Suede - 1997 Fanclub B-Sides Gig : London Forum 05 April 1997

- In 1997, Suede played one of their legendary fanclub gigs at the London Forum on Saturday 5th April. This time around, the band played a set solely of B-sides, including the first and only live performances for a number of songs (Including "Sam"*, "These Are The Sad Songs", and "Every Monday Morning Comes").
For a very brief period of time, you could order a professionally shot VHS video of the show in return for a cheque for £10. I don't know how many VHS tapes were sent out, but it wasn't many, and many people had their cheques returned. Luckily, I got one of those tapes.
Not previously published on UA-cam, I've recovered a wonky and failing DVD-R transfer of the VHS and converted it into MP4. This video contains the main set of the show - and stops at 62 minutes thanks to a bad sector on the Woolworths DVD-R. In order to get the DVD to play this far I had to manually play it in VLC and screen capture the output (hence the "DVD://d" notice on the opening seconds).
Nonetheless, here is the entire released VHS-only show (apart from the last few minutes of "Every Monday Morning Comes", which will be uploaded separately).
Technical notes : Taken from an old VHS tape, so the quality is what it is. There are some white dots at the top of the screen : these contain timecode and audio information and were not visible when played back on VHS.
Tracklist :
01. The Sound Of The Streets
02. My Dark Star
03. Together
04. Killing Of A Flashboy
05. He's Dead
06. Another No One
07. The Living Dead
08. The Big Time
09. Europe Is Our Playground
10. This Time
11. To The Birds
12. The Young Men
13. These Are The Sad Songs
14. Every Monday Morning Comes [end cut off]
*Wait, where's "Sam" and "My Insatiable One"? They were edited out of the VHS release.
This band is so underrated it pisses me off frankly. Every song is a bloody masterpiece
Underrated suede?
The truth is that it is quite absurd to say that a band that has been in music for thirty-three years is an underrated band.
@@thebartolo3873dude so you play small gigs for 33 years that means you are automatically not underrated? Ed Sheeran = overrated. Suede = underrated.
Definitely underappreciated. I just saw them twice in L.A. and they blow almost all other bands away live. Suede, to me, is as important as Radiohead and on certain days even more so.
To this day they leave some of thei best tracks off the album. "Still Waiting" from the Autofiction sessions is a breathtaking song.
@TheBartolo Well think of it this way. Of all the other bands that get thrown under the britpop label, Suede is easily the best. They're leagues better than Oasis and Blur and unlike Pulp, they've continued putting out music
I was there. Somehow got invited to the after party on the 1st floor bar. It was a who’s who of Britpop celebrities … remember hanging with members of Lush, Elastica, Jack and a lot of people that looked they should be in bands … the whole thing got gloriously weird when Neil Hannon from Divine Comedy got us all in cabs to the Marathon Bar (a late night Kebab shop in Camden with a hidden speakeasy type bar that semi-legally served booze long after everything had shut in London and would perfectly fit a Quentin Tarantino movie). Anywher Neil got up on a table and sang Sinatra and Elvis classic - or something that sounded like that. He eventually fell off the table and made a quick escape through the back door. The rest of us stayed on until 4 or 5am.
The gig was amazing. The video doesn’t do it justice. It’s also the last Suede gig I’ve seen that I’d call the end of part 2 of Suede. Something changed from about that time.
Oakes is a genius just a Butler is, impeccable guitarist
I was at this. I had no idea it was filmed. The fan club was £10 a year to join. You got a magazine every few months and the likes of this: a free gig, for fan club members only, on a Saturday afternoon at The Forum, Kentish town. The fans voted for their favourite B-sides and the band performed them. Funny enough I also saw the reformed, original line up of Duran Duran at The Forum in 2003. Two of the most exciting live acts I’ve seen.
I was there too! Can’t believe it’s been 25 years ago. Came over from Germany for this Fanclub gig. I was such a fangirl for them.
I attended a fan club gig at The Electric Ballroom in Camden in 2002 and one in Madrid for fans only too in 1999 for just £5.Those were the days.Just saw the band where I live now in Bath. They are incredible.
This is the show that literally every Suede fan would want to see. Very few bands have so many B-Sides that are neck and neck with their singles. Several 80's/90's British bands. The Cure, Oasis, Gene... who else?
The Smiths also. But my top 3 is Oasis / Suede / The Smiths
@@federicozelechowski5551 Cast had a b-side called Fulfill which to me sounds better than its a-side Walkaway.
Divine comedy
The Verve also
Bloc Party has some amazing b sides under their belt
Fantastic, Thanks 🙏🏻 ❤❤❤❤❤
Love this era. Amazing b sides. God.
'Sound of the streets' alone was already worth the price of admission. To see a song as brilliant as that as a b-side never ceases to amaze me.

Suede peaked between 1992 - 1997 sadly it ended then
Then they reformed and it’s been fantastic again since 2013.
Not everything was great but they had some if their best songs as bsides on headmusic and a new morning. Just beautiful stuff really.
Tack 🎉 så mycket för den här videon☺
