    I've been teaching Uechi-ryu Karate for a few years now and I didn't know most of this stuff. Thanks for making this video it helped me realize why Sanchin is so important.

      Of course, you realize that Enkamp Sensei has been addressing the fine points of Sanchin Goju-ryu. The breathing in Uechi-ryu's Sanchin is completely different as is the intent of the kata for that ryuha. .

    A little more than 60 years when /i first began to learn Sanchin, the terms were in Chinese, but one thing is for sure, I was never told about the health benefits of Sanchin. Thank you for this presentation.

    Drinking too much beer can increase the chances of developing Hemorrhoids. If you run into that master again, have him put the ice on the hemorrhoids. That will reduce the swelling and not dilute the beer.

      Also eat couple of whole oranges every day for vitamin C to repair tissue, must eat some greens like spinach in every meal to soften the stools, to ensure soft stools take a magnesium-calcium capsule/tablet according to bottle's directions, drink water as often as required, soft stools prevent repairing tissue from tearing again and again, while vitamin c repairs tissue, also avoid eating/drinking anything that causes diarrhea such as gluten if gluten intolerant and lactose if lactose intolerant. Also avoid too little fiber which causes cancer in meat lovers and too much fiber as size of stools changes according to amount of fiber intake. These few lines I have written are after years of continuously painful personal experience. If someone has consumed too much vitamin c then one may develops sores in the mouth, so take folic acid as deficiency of folic acid develops due to excess vitamin C.

    Hi jesse. iam 3 dan goyu ryu practioner, i have practice karate for almost 23 years now. In my school sanchin is practice every class as its consider the ground stone. When you reach 1 dan, youre invited to whats is call 3 years of sanchin, that means, doing the kata for 3 years every day. Shall you skip a day, you have to start again. Sanchin is above all a chi-kung o ki development excercise. The breathing shall be the external manifestation of you moving the ki to what are name as the little and the grand circle. These are circuits that move the ki to the meridians that under chinese old knowledge are part of the energy structure of the human body. As one advances in the DO the comprehension of these kata goes more deep and becomes a goal in it self. Its said that the mastering of sanchin is enough to master karate as a whole. I very much like it you video about the external aspects of the kata. As its said in my school: sanchin, mushin, three is one and one its not. greetings

    I appreciate your explanation on how to position feet and shoulders. The question I have is how should the muscles be tensed? When you said Sanchin involves isometric and isotonic contraction, does that mean you're tensing opposing muscle groups throughout the kata, or mainly at the end of each move?

    • @Phantoman7
      @Phantoman7 3 роки тому

      Its been many years since I have practiced Karate, and I know you are asking Jesse, not me, but I wanted to see if I could help.. If I am not mistaken, you are exhaling out of the lower diaphragm, but you are using your abdominal muscles to hold the stomach back from distending outwards. Like a wall of muscles holding the stomach tight still as you exhale. We used to have our Sensei come around and hit us as we did the kata, including strikes to our stomach, so most definitely we had to be holding our stomach tight.

    Really enjoyed this series on Sanchin! Question: At approx. 2:40 in the 3rd video you're demonstrating breathing. It seems as though you're exhaling as your left arm slightly retracts - I recall you mentioning that exhales accompanied outward movements, and inhalation accompanied inward movements. I do understand how it can be reversed from time to time (my practice of Uechi Ryu has involved much Sanchin, needless to say), though I would love to hear any thoughts you have about its appearance in the video clip. And who knows, you may have been inhaling all along!

    • @dojoskeptic

      Jesse was doing the breathing from Goju-Ryu. Uechi breathing is done differently. Both have "in through the nose and out the mouth," but the cadence is different. Hopefully, your teacher can give you the details on proper breathing.

    Hi Jesse, I have heard and practiced that while breathing In during Sanchin , you need to imagine breath going in through nose and thought head(upper curve) to back your spine and imagine it gets curled there at your core.Then when you release of exhale imagine going the same way out and only difference is exhale through mouth...Hope I did not exaggerate but I practised it like this and while punching g out the hands feel more powerful.
    Is this technique right?
