Cathy Moriarity is technically in the Ryan Murphy-verse already as she was in American Crime Story season 2 as a hotel owner (?) in - wait for it - MIAMI!
Omg the first wives club is my favorite movie!!! I’m patiently waiting for y’all retro review of it!! Soapdish is such a quotable film! Like steel magnolias and The birdcage.
Also suggests for Kathy/Cathy month. For Cathy moriarty - kindergarten cop For Kathy najimy - sister act Maybe Kathy griffin - Jackie’s back Maybe Kathy bates - water boy or rat race because she has a cameo in that
I saw Sally Field on Broadway in a production of Albee's "The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?" and her acting onstage was phenomenal. We were lucky enough to be in the front row, and she threw every single thing she had at the role, and it was amazing.
This was certainly worth waiting for! This is such a special movie to me and I'm so happy y'all gave it thE RESPECT THAT IT'S ENTITLED TO. The casting, the wacky plot, the dialogue, it's perfect to me...plus I always revise the ending in my head as Montana confessing that she's treated David so badly because she was insecure that someone like him was so good to her, him pretty quickly realizing his feelings for her haven't changed, and her staying on the show becoming the first out trans woman in daytime television and the first trans recipient of the not Daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actress. By the way, thanks for pronouncing my name correctly because it doesn't happen often 😅
I was thinking about how color plays into camp and a movie I recently rewatched was jawbreaker (which doesn’t hold up granted i don’t think it ever did but it’s still fun and would make for a good retro review) and there is a strong color storyline with the outfits. Also would be down for a month Dedicated to movie makeovers like jawbreaker, mrs doubtfire, princess diaries, miss congeniality, never been kissed, working girl…the list goes on. Makeover March or may!
@@josephirizarry5195 same! That’s why I bought it and watched it because it’s not good and the logic doesn’t work because if Liz was a virgin they could test for that and see that was a bs story but the fashion moments and hallway walk is iconic!
Looking at the animated opening credits, I was reminded of Pedro Almodovar. Then I thought, there’s a lot of his style in this film, like the late 80s Women on the Verge kind of thing….not that they were necessarily consciously doing this! But the bright colours, the blending of real life and fictional drama… I’m only halfway through the review, apologies if you mention this. And thanks for a fab retro review!
Don't forget the animated opening for "Ruthless People", the Bette Midler-Danny DeVito vehicle. Very campy, colorful, and with 80s-style furniture thrown into the mix as well.
Listen I thought you guys were my spirit animals before, but this seals the deal! This is my constant go to every few years and still marvel at how fantastic it is! Thank you so much for a wonderful review and a lot of laughs, feels like I'm watching it with my bffs!
I just read a research study on the removal of color from society as a whole. More saturated color is more expensive and more difficult to mass produce. The quest for commodification and production savings has literally leached color from the world. So interesting you pointed out how movies are getting less colorful too. 🤔
I happened to watch this movie for the first time last week, so this was perfect timing! It feels so nice to have loved it and then enjoy your really insightful praise.
Yessss! This movie is one a fav for me and my mom. I always thought that when Cathy M. Gets “outed” as a man, that suddenly people from the crew could start raising their hands saying “No, I’m the transgender!” And then it would end up that most of the crew was transgender - that would be the ultimate soap opera twist! And then their could be extra scenes at the end of a big party! Maybe Liza Minnelli could be singing and performing at the party?!? I remember as a kid thinking that it was wrong, but I didn’t know why. Same with Ace Ventura. Cheers to better endings in old movies ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
I remember watching this movie as a kid and being creeped out by the almost incest of it all. I have to revisit now as an adult. Also, I cant see Kevin Kline as a grown up Peter Pan. However, I can see him as Captain Hook
This for some reason is my boyfriends favorite movie now, I showed it to him about 6 months ago and we recently rewatched it on his request. It’s always been a favorite of mine I’m just so surprised, he did not enjoy romy and Michelle but our daughter who is two seemed to
You should check out Delirious with John Candy and Mariel Hemingway. 1991, Soap Opera writer is somehow transported into his Soap Opera where he has the power to change the plot with his typewriter.
Man I love this movie! I think I am going to rewatch it tonight I have not watched in like 4 years and it has such a wonderful cast. Thanks for reminding me what a gem it is.
I saw this movie so many times as a kid. And I felt so alone because I truly knew only one other person who loved camp at my age. Luckily she was my best friend. Because we watched troop Beverly hills and this movie so many times!
I have watched this movie at least once a year since it was on VHS. The scene of Celeste breaking into Jeffrey's apartment to stop the possible incest...top to bottom golden moments. It's never not been funny.
When this movie came out I remember going to see it first run and fell in love with it! So much so that when it came to the $1 theater a few months later I went every day for a month during afternoon matinee with my best friend. We were OBSESSED!!!
LOVE Soapdish, LOVE moviebitches, and LOVE summercamp 22 - thank you!!! Soapdish is linked in my brain to Tootsie - watched them both SO much - possible retro review? I think it still holds up?
Some Like it Hot has a great comedy score! The theme is unmistakable. I'm sure there's a million other great examples, but I'm listening to that one in my head in particular as I'm typing. Also a great summer movie
(46:26) For me, David doesn't say Milton with any disgust or revulsion -- he says it in a way that is accepting and trying to get to fully know Montana as a person. I think if this movie wasn't made in 1990/1 , David and Montana wouldn't have ended up together in the end.
i love this film. watched it a TON as a kid, every time it came on tv. had no idea that was elizabeth shue. every i try to name films she was in (outside of adventures in babysitting) i always go to back to the future 2 and cocktail....the end. but i know she was in lots more. LOVE HER! was never into her like i was christina ricci and wynona ryder but she holds a special place in my heart for being in my favorite film of all time (adventures in babysitting)
I love that my memory of soap dish is now overlaid with katya superimposed on some of these amazing scenes in Unhhhh because that just feels right. Alan Silvestri really has the most wildly varied IMBD I think possible. Predator AND back to the future? P.S. heart and souls retro review?
I rly agree that Bowen, Matt Rogers, and that generation of comedians are the modern answer to Janeane and Alan! I know Chelsea Perretti’s directorial debut is starring so many stellar up-and-comers, like Meg Stalter and Kate Berlant, so I’m immensely hopeful that movie will revive the unabashedly zany ensemble comedy!
It's funny that you confused Hamlet with Macbeth, because our very own Alan Cumming did Macbeth on Broadway and he played all the parts. It was staged inside a psychiatric clinic and everything happened inside his head. I now wonder where the idea came from.
Hah I just watched this for the first time in over two decades a week or so ago. Still great. It made me long for what movies used to be. They don't make them like this anymore.
Speaking of Dynasty I love Matt Baume and his Culture Cruise series and I know he did a video on the gay plotline on the OG Dynasty and how the writers and importance of showing a gay character on prime time tv at the time and some of the plot lines. I can't recommend his stuff enough!
Does it count as a trope if two amazing movies use dramatic reveals of non-heteronormative characters during a live taping of a daytime soap opera like this and Tootsie did?
I need a full hour on what a babe Cathy Morriarty was in the 90's and still is a babe. I love her, she makes the best villain. Question for the crowd has Cathy ever played notba villain? Has she ever been like Kathleen Turner and been an ingenue as well or just the bitch?
Burt Reynolds, no. BUT, Burt and Sally Field had been real-life lovers, so there's that ... Don't forget Carrie Fisher's greatest moment, after she "auditions" mega-hunk Costas Mandylor for the part of The Waiter. And of course, there's Sally Field's husband's name: "Bolt"!! As for the transphobia, I guess it's a generational thing. Folks my age don't see "Soap Dish" as any more transphobic than "Some Like it Hot" is. BTW: I'm also a "One Fine Day" junkie. Sweetest movie ever!
When it comes to animated intros…. Maybe you’re thinking of “Ruthless People”? ua-cam.com/video/7cohCR3rUh0/v-deo.html Which….. should also DEFINITELY be reviewed!!! (One of my all time favorites 🖤😍🖤)
The 21 seconds of scrolling through Alan Silvestri's IMDB credits was perhaps my favorite MB gag in months.
I second this emotion
Soapdish is one of my favourite movies of all time. Thank you for this long overdue retro review.
Cathy Moriarity is technically in the Ryan Murphy-verse already as she was in American Crime Story season 2 as a hotel owner (?) in - wait for it - MIAMI!
Avaryl's film knowledge and references are once again OFF THE CHARTS👌👌👌
Omg the first wives club is my favorite movie!!! I’m patiently waiting for y’all retro review of it!! Soapdish is such a quotable film! Like steel magnolias and The birdcage.
As a trans woman my only gripe with the ending is RDJ’s reaction and the way that Montana is assumed to just go back to being Milton?
Nothing like deadnaming a trans villain
It’s like some strange sort of transphobic Rumplestilksin, “you guessed my deadname, you’ve undone my spell of trans!” Like what??
Also suggests for Kathy/Cathy month.
For Cathy moriarty - kindergarten cop
For Kathy najimy - sister act
Maybe Kathy griffin - Jackie’s back
Maybe Kathy bates - water boy or rat race because she has a cameo in that
I feel like a postcards from the edge retro review would be perfection

Yay I’m so glad!!! ❤️
The casting is EVERYTHING

I have a kinda sorta sentimental spot for Jawbreaker because I was a teen when I saw it but even then I knew it was a shitty Heathers ripoff
@@josephirizarry5195 same! That’s why I bought it and watched it because it’s not good and the logic doesn’t work because if Liz was a virgin they could test for that and see that was a bs story but the fashion moments and hallway walk is iconic!

That is such a good shout.
I read somewhere that this was actually based on Women on the Verge, like a loose adaptation.
Don't forget the animated opening for "Ruthless People", the Bette Midler-Danny DeVito vehicle. Very campy, colorful, and with 80s-style furniture thrown into the mix as well.

Whoopie Month needs to feature Jumping Jack Flash!! It taught me everything I needed to know about dating online.
That is honestly my favorite Whoopie movie! I quote that movie with my sister all the damn time! "Don't shave with a Sickle baby" 😂
It wouldn’t be a Summer Camp episode without a sleepaway camp reference😂
They missed a trick by not naming “Nurse Nan”, “Nurse Mann”! 🤭
I just read a research study on the removal of color from society as a whole. More saturated color is more expensive and more difficult to mass produce. The quest for commodification and production savings has literally leached color from the world. So interesting you pointed out how movies are getting less colorful too. 🤔
So they really went against the grain when they did the show Pushing Daisies. It was the most colorful thing I've ever seen on tv.
I happened to watch this movie for the first time last week, so this was perfect timing! It feels so nice to have loved it and then enjoy your really insightful praise.
For those wanting more Cathy Moriarty, she’s in “But I’m A Cheerleader!”
I died cackling the whole time you were scrolling through Silvestris IMDB page, omg
Once again you hit me with a review of one of my favorite movies!😍😍😍
So DAMN happy rn you two reviewed this movie!!!! It's one of my faves!!
Suggestions for "Whoopi Month": Fatal Beauty, Corina Corina, Jumpin Jack Flash, Boys on the Side and Telephone!!!
My Stepmother is an Alien lives rent free in my brain, the drinking car batteries, the looks served, drinking car batteries, fabulous hats...
The gold bars!! Iconic!!
you guys suggested this movie in passing like 3 years ago and its been my fave ever since!!!! im so glad you're reviewing it!!!

First time watching it for #summercamp. Despite the problematic ending I loved it ❤️🖤
I remember watching this movie as a kid and being creeped out by the almost incest of it all. I have to revisit now as an adult. Also, I cant see Kevin Kline as a grown up Peter Pan. However, I can see him as Captain Hook

Got super excited when I saw you were reviewing Soap Dish. Thumbs up before either of you said a word.
The soundtrack is awesome with all that fun cha-cha music.
I love this movie. So campy. So good.
I saw this movie so many times as a kid. And I felt so alone because I truly knew only one other person who loved camp at my age. Luckily she was my best friend. Because we watched troop Beverly hills and this movie so many times!

I didn’t know I needed it, but now I am CLAMORING for a Hook retro review (Rufio! Rufio! Rufio!)
When this movie came out I remember going to see it first run and fell in love with it! So much so that when it came to the $1 theater a few months later I went every day for a month during afternoon matinee with my best friend. We were OBSESSED!!!

What the heck? I didn't get notified. Regardless am I so excited for another of your absolutely hilarious reviews!
Ok I'm only 2 mins in but someone's gotta mention how good Avaryl and Andrew look in these fits?? I mean!!! 🏖🌟
Some Like it Hot has a great comedy score! The theme is unmistakable. I'm sure there's a million other great examples, but I'm listening to that one in my head in particular as I'm typing. Also a great summer movie
can you PLEASE retro review Only You! Such a good cast!
I love what you’ve done with the endjng
Cathy Moriarty is great. She was so good in But I'm A Cherrleader. Seriously, a perfect movie for summer camp.
I have needed this review for years! Worth waiting for! 🥰
The public outing WAS great.
I'm so here for a Wayne's world retro review. I also loved Heart and Souls.
YAAAAAAAAASS!!!!!!!!! Been waiting for this gem! Can't wait to watch!
I just watched this earlier this week 😍 so excited to see you two pop up with Soap Dish!!
I’m sorry, but if gary marshall makes a cameo, you know you’re in for a good time.
(46:26) For me, David doesn't say Milton with any disgust or revulsion -- he says it in a way that is accepting and trying to get to fully know Montana as a person. I think if this movie wasn't made in 1990/1 , David and Montana wouldn't have ended up together in the end.
Omg your new intro card, I love it!
I love this movie so much!! And my favorite Whoopi movie is Corrina Corrina!!! ❤
If Andrew wants to get into soap operas then I think 'Passions' is a must... it is completely 'banooners'.
THAT SIDE PONY IN THE INTRO IS SIMPLY DELICIOUS!!!
This movie is such Almodovar movie, but in american way
i love this film. watched it a TON as a kid, every time it came on tv. had no idea that was elizabeth shue. every i try to name films she was in (outside of adventures in babysitting) i always go to back to the future 2 and cocktail....the end. but i know she was in lots more. Loved your commentary and review of this iconic movie, but I just jumping in here to compliment Andrew's Club Cumming outfit B)
I love this movie!!! It’s really funny if you have ever watched a soap opera! So many chars come back from the dead on American soaps! 🤣🤣🤣
I love that my memory of soap dish is now overlaid with katya superimposed on some of these amazing scenes in Unhhhh because that just feels right.
Alan Silvestri really has the most wildly varied IMBD I think possible. Predator AND back to the future?

Yesssss. My moms favorite Kevin Klein movie 🤩
Great review!
"I'm actually enjoying being offended". So refreshing to hear these days! 😄
Just watched this earlier this afternoon! It's a fun fun movie!! They should redo it, just fix the ending and it would be so fun!
Kathy Moriarty was also in The Mambo Kings.
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY!!!!!! 😁
Please do a But I'm A Cheerleader review. I heard Cathy Moriarty's voice and it brought me right to that movie.
Tootsie came out in 1982 and had the same premise with soap actors having to go live near the end of the movie. Speaking of Dustin Hoffman.
LOOOOOOOOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!
I can’t believe I now know two characters called Smee (Hook Smee and Star Wars Smee) 😂
I know Kathy Najimy in the HBO comedy special "The Kathy & Mo Show" with Mo Gaffney.
It's funny that you confused Hamlet with Macbeth, because our very own Alan Cumming did Macbeth on Broadway and he played all the parts. It was staged inside a psychiatric clinic and everything happened inside his head. I now wonder where the idea came from.
Ha! Just started the vid, but I watched this with my hubby last week! Can’t wait for y’all’s thoughts! Yay,
Hah I just watched this for the first time in over two decades a week or so ago. Still great. It made me long for what movies used to be. They don't make them like this anymore.
It's high time that this movie was reviewed.
Not you fixing the movie at the end!!! Lol.
Review Fatal Beauty! It's my favorite Whoopi Goldberg movie and nobody ever talks about it, although Jumping Jack Flash is a good one, too.
please watch everything everywhere all at once 🙏🏻🙏🏻
You really have to had watched Erica Kane on All My Children to really appreciate how much Sally Field nailed her.
I LOVE THIS MOVIIIIEEEEEEEEE
Speaking of Dynasty I love Matt Baume and his Culture Cruise series and I know he did a video on the gay plotline on the OG Dynasty and how the writers and importance of showing a gay character on prime time tv at the time and some of the plot lines. I can't recommend his stuff enough!
I would love a review of Hook :)
This is a kind of film that I believe that merits a remake. Its great but there are things that can definitely improved on.
YES
I always try to get my Marvel friends, who love RDJ, to watch this or Heart and Soul.
I miss the fun campy sensibilities of 90's cinema.
Can I just say you both look gorgeous
YESSSSS
That garment of Andrew's... want so much. Anybody know the make?
why is this on zoom?
I know Cathy Moriarty best from the ICONIC But I'm a Cheerleader! #RetroReview?
A month of Whoopee? I don't know if my boyfriend can handle it but hmmm.
Does it count as a trope if two amazing movies use dramatic reveals of non-heteronormative characters during a live taping of a daytime soap opera like this and Tootsie did?
This movie is just a master class of overacting! Also I do miss a 90s blowout hair style! Where the hair doesn’t move or has all the movement.
I need a full hour on what a babe Cathy Morriarty was in the 90's and still is a babe. I love her, she makes the best villain.
Question for the crowd has Cathy ever played notba villain? Has she ever been like Kathleen Turner and been an ingenue as well or just the bitch?

(One of my all time favorites 🖤😍🖤)
Corrina, Corrina with Whoopi Goldberg, it made me angry, especially the ending.
