My friend was in the meat rack at night once, checking out this guy for like 10mins. Then he walked over to get a little frisky, and it was a tree stump. Now that is the fire island movie I want to see 😂
Fun fact: this concept was commissioned as a Quibi script, and rewritten to be a movie. Which says a lot to me about the timeline issues, and also makes Mrs. Bennett's throwaway line about being an investor in Quibi a little more funny.
Hey Gen Z here, so I had no idea it was a pride and prejudice allegory so that was fun to know, so I didn’t compare it to that. And a tid-bit I noticed that only fans guy when we first met him had a black bandanna in his back left pocket, which in hanky code means he likes to film so I thought that was an interesting detail.
"does anyone wanna trade a crest white strip for a prep pill?" little moments/lines like that is what really made me love this movie despite some of its more obvious flaws. the comedy moments totally saved it imo.
@@okayimbackwhateverjones you’re totally right tbh. I didn’t watch with a critical eye at all the first time, and I didn’t see any of the flaws these guys are talking about. I absolutely love this movie.
@@okayimbackwhateverjones oh I thought when u typed “not really obvious flaws” you meant that *you* didn’t see any obvious flaws. Sorry for the misunderstanding!
I mean, Wickham in the original novel is also horrific. Georgiana was a CHILD (a teenager, but that is STILL A CHILD) when he seduced her, he's horrendous, so I thought this adaptation nailed it tbh - the other recent modern adaptation of P&P, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, also made Wickham post [redacted] online without Lydia's permission and addressed the shamey-ness of it all, so perhaps I'm just already used to that as a modern framing of the original story, but I do think it got the point across well about the manipulative charisma of the horrible human being that he is. Also, great review as ever!!!
I thought for sure you were going to mention how when the "poor" characters first see the big, beautiful house they realize their cheap bottle of wine is no good and throw it into the bushes where it makes the Wet Hot American Summer smashing sound...followed by someone screaming. Made me immediately think of you two.
Love the shout-out to the six-tape VHS set for Pride & Prejudice! I lived outside the US back in the 90s, and once the opportunity to travel happened, I knew I could finally get the miniseries. (Cost me USD 70 too!) And then… I proceeded to not watch it for about six months - just never got around to it, because I felt six tapes was just going to be so long (ah, the pre-binging era…). So I made a deal to myself to watch one tape a day, thinking that'll help me through it. Mwahahaha, I watched the whole set in one night - it was an hour per tape, and the adaptation so well done, you wanted more at the end of each tape. (The lake scene is on Tape #4) I then pushed the VHS set to friends, who also hesitated at a six-tape haul. Made the same deal: just watch a tape a day. The friends also thought that would be more manageable, and agreed. But of course, all of them watched it all in one evening!
I have a story about The pride and prejudice miniseries. A coworker from a job many years passed and I were talking about pride and prejudice. I mentioned I had never seen the BBC mini series and he lent it to me. Now in order for me to get the DVD collection from him he had me all but sign a formal legal contract that said that I would not ruin them or lose them and that under my care they would come under no harm. But damn was it worth it .
I was happy to see gay representation in a movie that was funny, well-scripted and well-plotted, IMO. I enjoyed Fire Island thoroughly. I was actually getting kind of a Nancy Meiers energy from the cinematography. I think there are some camp classic touchstones in this photography and directing. I am so glad to have heard your thoughts on this as well.
I don't know if I'll watch this movie but damn now I do want to watch Pride and Prejudice again, and then The Lizzie Bennet Diaries web series! Also very nice to see some gay Asian representations other than being nerdy or sidekicks
When I was in high-school 23 years ago I had a friend tell me he would rather be called a f*g or queer than Fairy or some other slur at the time. This was maybe 2002.
ive adored you two since 2018 when I was 20 and really depressed taking summer classes in community college anyways it isn't summer without summer camp!!!!
I was cynical going into this movie thinking it was going to be an early 2000 movie made for logo but it surprised me when I saw an early screening. It starts out like that but it touches on the gay cliques and the vapid judgements muscle Mary’s that exist in the community. But also talks about racism and body shaming that inhabits that world. When they showed up to that party and those rich gays looked down on the them was soo real because I felt that before. And also because the party was crashed by differently shaped gays it felt familiar to me. Even the dark room scenes and drugs were soo accurate. It could have used more sex scenes for sure but I think it captured enough to be sexy. Also how Howie wasn’t as sexually active made the character grounded that not all gays think about sex. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
The movie was fantastic at diversity but I'm bothered that we are still doing the funny fat friend trope. I feel his character should have been able to be sexual/romantic just like the other characters
@@Trevyyyyy as a plus sized person in the community I have plenty of people interested in sleeping with me. Lots of plus sized people do. How is it not realistic for a plus sized person to want sex and/or a relationship?
The rentals on FI are weekly, people stay out there for single weeks/weekends at a time. Having the movie take place over multiple weeks wouldn't work, 1- it wouldn't authentically capture a very specific experience that is FIP (the escapist appeal of being away on island for a limited amount of time and thus, making the most of that time). 2 - It would assume that all the individual characters and all the unrelated groups had booked the exact same multiple dates to be on the island, which would require advanced planning and a LOT of coincidence . Also, there isn't AS much hedonistic wild sex on the island as everyone assumes; most of it takes place in the afterparties during the late hours and early mornings. The daytime is usually spent on the beach, hanging out by the pool, stuff like that, etc.
I’m excited to watch this movie because I’m here for gay representation and Asian representation as an Asian ally, I’m happy to see it! I do think the problems with the film might be from trying to make it fit into the pride and prejudice archetype. Actually I think if this was more sense and sensibility based it would work better. Or much ado about nothing (which is Shakespeare but I recently rewatched much ado because I wanted to watch a good Branagh movie and omg! You need to do a retro review if not to talk about bad Keanu acting but at least to honor dame Emma)

@@carveylover I think they only talked about and used a keanu cutaway. But honestly after rewatching it, I want to talk about Michael Keaton’s acting choices because yes, keanu is bad at doing Shakespeare but Michael Keaton was eating every bit of scenery he could find
So happy I finally got to watch this review! I also enjoyed the movie, but you both wonderfully articulated the problems I had with it as well. And also, a quibble I have is that at the beginning Noah quotes P&P, gives a shout out to Jane Austen, and we also get a shot of his copy of P&P... and then the movie doesn't acknowledge how it literally is P&P. I kept on waiting for Noah to be like 'wait a minute.. oh my god I'm actually Elizabeth Bennet right now', and he never did! Missed opportunity! also I could not look at the actor playing Charlie without double taking and making sure Mathew Goode had not de-aged and wandered into a non-costume drama 😂
Thank you! I had pretty much the same feeling: enjoyed the film but was reluctant to recommend it and was having a hard time pinning what it was that bugged me about it. You however articulate it so well. 👍🏽 💕
I enjoyed the movie! Not perfect, but it was fun! I didn't even realize it was supposed to be a gay pride and prejudice, lol. It did kind of fizzle out for me towards the end, but overall still pretty cute and pretty gay.
Came here after seeing your review of Love, Simon- at the end you literally predicted a gay Pride & Prejudice 😂 so here’s holding out hope for an HBO Max Pride & Provincetown🤞
The fact that I was thinking if they would have Carriefied Joel Kim’s character’s career to justify the narration as the post it note was referenced was my sign to comment lol. It could of made the phone situation more of a big deal for Noah and incorporated resulting to handwriting and maybe could of been a device to like an I can be sophisticated without being pretentious moments in response to Will’s attitude somehow and maybe having Will writing him a letter could of added in showing a softer side to that character because he assumed Noah loves/appreciates handwritten letters because of the previous pretentious exchange. Also the fact that the character of Will feels ,intentionally or not, like a reference to another gay uptight lawyer from the city named Will, Noah being a writer in some way would of been a cute reference to the protagonist in Noah’s Arc.
My thing is that i really didn't care for the romance of the main guy, somehow he had way more chemistry with the villain. And i didn't buy the love confession of the charlie guy, the moment he hooked up with his ex i was kinda over it. I agree with Avaryl, i was like...sir, the moment the porn is on the internet it's there forever and this has way more complicated implications that can't be resolved with just deleting of the page. Other than that i did laugh with the funny moments, it was a perfectly decent movie, but it could have been so much more.
Ok just started the video I hope you liked the movie.. I loved it but pride and prejudice is my favorite book and I love all adaptations (I even enjoyed the zombie one lol) Edit: oK finished the video, I don't agree with a lot of the complaints, your ideas to "make it better" are great but I think would fit more for a mini series
Matt Rogers is also in the show I Love That For You on Showtime... highly recommend!!! (Please put Jenifer Lewis and Molly Shannon on FCI if they're not already there)
Also I was thinking about your comment on the lack of gay sex but imagine if someone did a gay movie that takes place during Folsom street fair! I would be down for that. Like it’s a young gay guy who isn’t out who moves from a conservative town to San Francisco for school who one day while exploring the city stumbles across the Folsom street fair and finds his tribe and becomes a leather daddy or leather daddy in training for even pup! Like to wang foo meets Tom of finland. That would be a fun movie!
So while I was bored at work I came up with a cute idea for my gay coming of age Folsom street fair movie. A young shy (possibly closeted) gay guy goes to San Francisco to go to fashion school and while there he can’t quite fit in (I kinda like the idea his family are ranchers and that he loves to work with fine leather goods) he gets a job at a place where he works with leather and his boss sensing who he is deep inside invites him to a leather bar and he finds who he really is and at the end of the movie, he creates a full runway show (I like the idea that his runway show be at Folsom) and the outfit are based on fetish gear and he is wearing a sexy fetish outfit too because he now knows he’s a leather daddy and he falls in love with pup who goes to his school. If anyone wants to elaborate, I’m fully down but this what I came up with
I feel like you guys are took hung up on it being pride and prejudice related. I really enjoyed the film and do agree with some of your points that could have improved the film. But maybe that is because I have never seen/read pride and prejudice and so was not comparing this to that
I enjoyed it a lot and wasn’t bothered by the voiceover etc, I had gone in with no particular expectations, even though I’m a Jane Austen Fan. I think they nailed the select few characters that they chose to translate pretty well. I do agree with the Wickham thing, the guy was was a legit criminal and was let go easy.
I don't care what y'all say. I've never seen pride and prejudice, but I thought the The chemistry between the characters and the writing were both great. I'm a straight dude and I have to say this was a damn funny movie. The funniest line was when the villain said... This is quaint, I thought every house on the island had a Jacuzzi. And the reply, I know, but we started to go fund me, so fingers crossed.
im too wholesome for me. it may be real.......for SOME, but this is so not my life. give me mahogany but make it gay. give me clueless but make it gay. that works for me. i want to support asian talent and i like the main two comics that are leads and magaret of course but not in this. instead of fire island they meet at a coffee shop and go from there :)
The movie is groundbreaking for the Gaysian community, periodt, and I don't think it's a film all about centering Jane Austen's characters and being faithful to it. Fire Island centers gay Asian-American love.
Being hypercritical of almost there media is so true I love video games and the ones I could write a thesis on are the ones that have so much going for it and could be fixed with some small easy changes.
So my movie theme for the month was obviously lgbt movies and I’ve watched quite a few so far. With that being said I really liked this movie because it was so light and ends on a happy notes (compared to many others).
I really enjoyed this movie and laugh out loud many times. Y'all like the movie as well, but ripped a new asshole for not being like the other "Pride & Prejudice" movie adaptations. Lastly, saying the movie is not sex positive is a strange critique when they literally talk about sex positivity throughout.
when i first watched the trailer i was so excited because i thought it was a legitimate gay horror/slasher film i was very disappointed to find out what it actually was ngl
The movie of Love, Simon makes me sad because the book is so good. There is sex or as much sex you can have in YA novel. The book was really good and written by a queer woman( I think) so the movie was a bit of bummer. But that is sometimes how it is when you are trying to make something for a niche audience mainstream.
i discovered that book in 9th grade in my school’s library and it literally changed my life the movie was so disappointing especially them not even casting a gay lead
Being a gaysian and never read or watch Pride and Prejudice before, I absolutely adored this movie! It resonated with me and I'm so glad to see some gaysian representation (which we don't see a lot of) and this film was it. Noah and Howie's characters both reminded me a lot of myself and my gaysian bestie. Their struggle with being gaysian in the toxic gay culture and their sisterhood, how they support and uplift each other. It's interesting hearing your guy's perspectives on the movie and the comparison to Pride and Prejudice eventhough I don't agreed with some of the critiques. I still love you bitches. I did really enjoyed this movie! Just wanted to let you guys know from my perspective. Happy Pride!
I really wanted to like this movie, but the plot felt thin, poorly acted (with the exceptions of Bowen Yang and somewhat Margaret Cho), and mostly an excuse for Joel Kim Booster to run around with his shirt off. Maybe it's just that this scene has already received A LOT of attention in gay cinema. The POC POV also felt betrayed by the fact that many of the POC's just fell into stereotypes. Opportunity missed.
I didn’t mind the narration too much and I truly loathe over narration in film and tv. It’s such a lazy tired way to convey info to the audience. Example is the Netflix show NEVER HAVE I EVER. over half the dialogue in a given episode seems to be narration from a disembodied character that isn’t even important to the show. It’s horrible.
tbh I kinda dread when y'all cover movies that are about and for gay people because they're always your least charitable reviews. It's kinda like you go "This is representation, this is serious, this is important for the culture" and set your standards higher than you would for most other things. Like watching this review back to back with your video on Dangerous Liaisons (another similarly flawed modern reimaginging), your approaches are like night and day.
Oh my gosh. I thought this was going to be a review of Fire Island. You were talking about so many different movies and things, I did not see a review of the movie in there at all. I couldn't tell what you were talking about. So I will help you. A group of friends go to Margaret Chos home on fire Island. You might know some of these people, but you would likely not hang out with them, unless you are a drug indused drunken club kid. Not one of them interesting, and way over the top gay. And, not one bit funny. One of the things about Bros was that the sex and drugs gave gays a bad name. But, this group of way over the top gays who's intent is to party and whip out their drug kits to get totally F'd up is relateable and funny? And does not make gays look bad? I'm sorry it makes us look horrible, and I absolutely hated that. Then they are surprised that one of them gets taken advantage of and doesn't know it, because he has zero self control. Did not feel sorry for him at all. And, really did not care what happened to any of these boys. I was excited to watch this movie for fire island and Margaret Cho. But she was the only thing I liked about it. And, the idea that a story about a group of friends going to fire island sounded fun to me. But, as I watched it, and the drug use and drunken douches started to flow, I am thinking why is she friends with these douchebags. OMG!! The only person I could relate too (besides Margaret Cho) was the shy Asian guy, and Maybe the lawyer who came out of his shell near the end of the movie. But, I think Yoda would say. Care about these other people I do not. Forgetable they are. Was it a bad movie? No. But, Bros was far better by a mile. I'm torn between a living color "hated it" And it was passable. 5- out of 10.
I know this is a movie adaption of Pride and Prejudice but I did not like this movie, I thought the whole movie was so blaza. Not characters to get invested in. Had to stay with X boyfriend due to Lyme disease? Then forced chasing-"I love you"-what? But, I love Joel booster-eye candy.
I love this channel, but this movie looked boring and this review was also, y'all talked about editing and sound and Pride and Prejudice like 95% of the time without really mentioning what made the movie entertaining or not. At the end of the review, basically the only information gained was 'it's a semi-gay movie about pride and prejudice, but not really, so watch it or don't' and that's about it.
Guys, your video isn’t a movie review of Fire Island… y’all just complaining that the film isn’t a direct rip of Pride and Prejudice. “Omg Darcy wouldn’t do that… Wickham isn’t like that…?!” I’m like BROOO… y’all just complaining… I mean I cannot even right now… the chick just be complaining and has NOTHING to offer in any of the videos, have you even lived?! Are you new?! Don’t act like you know when you have no f’cking idea… “this movie’s voiceover is explaining for the straights…” THEN your gay friend literally explaining everything to you… girl go home…
My friend was in the meat rack at night once, checking out this guy for like 10mins. Then he walked over to get a little frisky, and it was a tree stump. Now that is the fire island movie I want to see 😂

I really liked the color grading/palette and filming of it. But yeah agreed with a lot of your criticisms
You guys have got to check out "Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker," if you haven't before. Such an obscure and hilarious film!
I feel like you guys are took hung up on it being pride and prejudice related. I really enjoyed the film and do agree with some of your points that could have improved the film. But maybe that is because I have never seen/read pride and prejudice and so was not comparing this to that
(18:30) I think Andrew knows that things can be removed from the Internet ... And that's all I am going to say.
I loved peppermint in this. I kept wondering where the jokes were
I enjoyed it a lot and wasn’t bothered by the voiceover etc, I had gone in with no particular expectations, even though I’m a Jane Austen Fan. I think they nailed the select few characters that they chose to translate pretty well. I do agree with the Wickham thing, the guy was was a legit criminal and was let go easy.
Bridget Jones retro review, please?
Reading some trivia this was suppose to be a series on quibi. Would have worked better as multiple ten minute episodes? You tell me.
Ten minutes? Ew. #Yuck
I saw this on Saturday. I loved it.
I adore you two and your reviews, Happy Pride!
i think the "poor" thing was important for the writer, speacially for accuracy.
I was thinking Springbreakers but make it gay, no?
The movie is groundbreaking for the Gaysian community, periodt, and I don't think it's a film all about centering Jane Austen's characters and being faithful to it. Fire Island centers gay Asian-American love.
Being hypercritical of almost there media is so true I love video games and the ones I could write a thesis on are the ones that have so much going for it and could be fixed with some small easy changes.
So my movie theme for the month was obviously lgbt movies and I’ve watched quite a few so far. With that being said I really liked this movie because it was so light and ends on a happy notes (compared to many others).
Are you planning to review Three Months as well?
Loved the movie, love Joel and Matt and Bowen!
I actually really loved this movie!
i want a Gay version of Fantomina. A bottom keeps changing their identity to keep seducing the same guy.
You lose me at "Joel Kim Booster"
Absolutely no one else got Springbreakers... but gay ? Just me?
wooo go gay people
Conrad Ricamora is a hunk! Yet i cant feel the va va voom from him in this movie... i dont know why
The fox search light made me turn off the movie fr 💀
have you guys reacted to the queer as folk reboot? it feels... like a lot. a lot of tonal dissonance
Is it out yet? Didn’t realize
@@MovieBitches idk ive just seen the ads for it a couple times.
Thank you for this news I am googling now will be back in a moment
i dont know drugs so..............................
Comment as a sacrifice to the YT-algorithm
Wut
MovieBitches 🤣
OMG!!
The only person I could relate too (besides Margaret Cho) was the shy
Asian guy, and Maybe the lawyer who came out of his shell near the end of the movie. But, I think Yoda would say. Care about these other people I do not. Forgetable they are.
Was it a bad movie? No. But, Bros was far better by a mile. I'm torn between a living color "hated it"
And it was passable.
Lol think they ask should've just said the inspiration was Springbreakers and covered the P&P derivatives?
I love this channel, but this movie looked boring and this review was also, y'all talked about editing and sound and Pride and Prejudice like 95% of the time without really mentioning what made the movie entertaining or not. At the end of the review, basically the only information gained was 'it's a semi-gay movie about pride and prejudice, but not really, so watch it or don't' and that's about it.
I agree with this comment
Lawd... this is what happens when they try to claim it's based in P&P
