Once I’ve serviced a stop and closed the doors, it’s too late. Safety is *everything* to me, and it is YOUR responsibility to be at the stop on time. My response to latecomers is,
*”Congratulations, you’re early for the next bus! Happy waiting!”* 🚌 💨 🤷‍♂️

Our local transit agency has a policy that once the bus has pulled away from the curb, it is gone, and they have posted signs to that effect at some major stops. As I understand, it's to help reduce accidents: Before pulling away, the driver will have scanned for hazards all round and is satisfied it is safe to move. Interruping that for a late passenger disturbs that flow and increases the risk of making a mistake and missing (or hitting...) something.

It is rule for just about every transit system.
Had a man roll up with his bike and I shook my head indicating NO. So he rode to the next stop and boarded. To get back at me he purposely started eating food on the bus. I tried to explain to him my eyes are focused on the road and looking for an opening. Even though I was in a bus only lane still have to watch for idiots.
In the passengers mind your still parked or close enough to board which isn’t always the case.
Another situation. Two people see bus and run to the stop. I’m 20 minutes down and waiting for a green light. Yes once green I should have stopped. However these individuals were digging through there backpack which tells me we they’re not ready. Your not going to hold up a bus load of people. 2 people complaining versus 28 people yelling, screaming and complaining at you. I do what is safe and efficient to keep bus route on time. Often ignoring comments from passengers and if gets real bad I stop and say to them doors open feel free to use your shoebarus and walk, or keep your comments to yourself.
Keolis mission statement is, “Thinking like a passenger.” If drivers followed that fully we wouldn’t be on time, EVER.

I will never intentionally leave someone behind if I know they want the bus. Too many bus drivers are just like "Welp you should have been at the bus stop on time." That's just not how life works sometimes, though. I even stop when someone waves me down even if they are several blocks from the stop. Granted, I don't operate rush hour buses. It's one of the reasons I love the late late shift.

My rule...once the bus starts moving you've missed it...a sudden stop for someone beating on the bus could result in a standee falling...people aren't expecting the bus to make a sudden stop for someone showing up at the last moment. I only ever backed up my trolleybus once in service when a car cut in front too close and then parked...I had to back up to get around them...could have shoved them down the road I guess!

In training to get CDL for bus. Never back up unless you absolutely have too, never, never, never. Finally get a para run for the day, spend half the day backing up out of driveways.

People would never know what we as bus operators have to go through, we deal with things from passengers, supervisors and other bus operators too.

Def understand pulling over and waiting for a passenger. Especially if you know the next bus isn't scheduled for an extended time. But just pull over in a safe manner, spot and wait a few seconds for them to walk to you. I wouldn't make a habit of it because it could cause you to run behind schedule and if you stop at a non-curb area, it could be a potential hazard.

An idea for a future video. I think it'll be cool if you show and tell about the different hand signals we use to communicate when we are in route, like the supervisor is up the street signal 😂

Only places that require buses is like major bus terminal bays.
In Hempstead, Nassau County, NY at Rosa Park Hempstead Transit Center, buses backup.
In Jamaica, Queens at 165 St Bus Terminal, both MTA and NICE Bus backup.

Not backing a bus up seems like good common sense. Backing up is the most unsafe maneuver any vehicle can perform and should be used only in extraordinary circumstances.

Never back up the bus on the street. Stop and make the pedestrian walk to the bus, if the bus is not too far ahead. Otherwise keep going.

  • @tangosierradelta
    @tangosierradelta 9 місяців тому +1

I'm glad you now and then clarify these misunderstandings that exist under the general public.
Especially when having already serviced the stop, you can't keep stopping. (Unless conditionsnare safe and responsible and the time frame allows it.)
Often people come up running, and don't get me wrong: I rather wait for people running than casually walking up, but when late on the schedule it is wise to understand you wouldn't have made that bus when it would have been in time either. You're just late!
In the case of the video, this is clearly unacceptable bully behaviour of the motorcycle driver, as the bus had already left the stop. Sorry, but the old man either needs to be at the stop now in advance or just had to wait the next one.
This video may seem 'good Samaritan', but it actually might bring other people to do unsafe, illegal and insensible actions like in this original video.
By the way, the video is (likely) from Ukraine. Not Russia, as was mentioned elsewhere.

In this scenario and in similar scenarios, this passenger simply missed the bus. And as for backing up to pick up a passenger, that just doesn't happen. My company has a strict policy of not backing buses without a backer. So sorry for the elderly passenger who missed the bus, but he simply missed the bus. The good part about it is, there'll be another bus alone and approximately 20 minutes.

  • @randybooker5957

I have a question to ask bus operators, do some of the elderly people and people in general get on your nerves when you're about to pull off from the bus stop into the traffic? I am also asking have y'all had someone stop you in traffic with a motorcycle or with their car?
