Also, I was briefly homeless for a while there when I was young. I had a problem with alcohol and drugs. Food was never an issue. We would go to churches and get food. We mocked Jesus. We mocked the people who were there helping us, their stupid smiling Christian faces. We took the food with no gratitude.
Now I’ve been 13 years sober and I’m a “stupid” smiling Christian who has more gratitude then I can ever deserve.

Latino here, inmigrated legally to this country 6 years ago. It was HARD at the very beginning but my parents teached me values and I worked my butt off . Never stole or killed. Poverty is never a good reason to steal.

Im black and had both my parents, luckily. Always knew right from wrong. My father would turn my behind into lunch meat if i did anything wrong. Today, im successful because of both my parents, highlighting my father. I thought he was being mean to me growing up, but i understand now why he disciplined me the way he did with me being in my 30s now. Thank you Dad. I love you.

If somebody did get busted for stealing food and went in front of a judge, it would probably get dismissed and they’d get a warning and a reevaluation of their food stamp allowance. People usually steal because they can. It’s easy and they can get away with it 95% of the time.

Why does no one ever bring up West Virginia when this argument comes up? It’s 90% white, but as a state it has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the country, yet 20% of the population is living below the poverty line. Crime has nothing to do with poverty.
Probably because it ranks one of the lowest cities in the”cost of living.” Also 64 percent of people live in a rural area with low population density and high population age. Poverty alone is not predictor of crime. Other factors such as population density, low income and high cost of living, resources, healthcare, proper food, etc.

There are immigrants coming to this country legally with very little money or education and becoming very successful in under a decade. I've known a number of people who were very poor at some point in their life, they never committed any crimes. They got jobs and worked their way out of poverty.

The other day, I got followed home from the gas station because apparently I looked up at the cop and seemed suppspicious(according to him) I was 1/2 a mile away from my house when he pulled me over. I had a suspended license. So instead of allowing anyone to come pick my car up and have it driven home. I was arrested and had my car towed. Who's to blame? MEEEEEEEE I AM! I shouldn't have driven, granted I got let out soon as I got to the jail but if I wasn't driving I wouldn't have gotten in any trouble. If I wasn't white I could use the argument that he was stereotyping me, and conclude he was a racist cop.
My 80 year old father was followed home by a policeman who thought he had stolen some gas because there was a description of the perp, "white guy with a baseball cap." Turns out the cop missed the rest...it was a ~young~ white guy. To save embarrassment the cop then proceeded to give dad a lecture about how he shouldn't block private drives when he is pulled over. Dad: "I live here."

As a white person, I'm in the too rich for welfare and too poor to eat crowd. Some of this help doesn't apply to parts of the situation. And the Section 8 Housing has more requests for it than spots.
