This is the role debut of Renée in Manon (the official video available on DVD in the same production was 2 years later with a partly different cast). This is definitely a signature role for her and with this performance she instantly entered in history for this part.
This document is part of a large project aimed to make available to a large audience for the first time many precious testimonies of great opera singers in memorable performances recorded live in the 90's and early 2000"s. This project has been made possible thanks to the support and generosity of a group of friends devoted to opera. A special mention here for Julia, a most devoted fan of Renée, whose dedication and generosity was instrumental to make this project possible.

Beautiful Renee! I saw her onstage as Manon in New York, and she was extraordinary. But my gold standard for Manon is Beverly Sills, who did not have the lush voice of Fleming, but seemed to have the Gallic charm (and better ease in French style) than anyone else in the second half of the 20th century.
