*"I'M SPARTACUS! I'M SPARTACUS! I'M SPARTACUS! I'M SPARTACUS!"* One of *the* most iconic moments in film that has entered popular culture. Amazing how he has never won an Oscar. His son Michael carries on that great legacy. Lived to 103. Wow. An unbeliveable talent who will be sorely missed. Thank you, Kirk. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
But "He scrapes his face like an Englishman!" (The Vikings, 1958) As an Englishman, I find this racist and offensive. Dozens of other civilizations shaved in that time period. however, only Kirk Douglas could make be think otherwise for a moment and make me research it. RIP, you prejudiced old f^ck.
He lived a remarkable life and in many ways ahead of his time. I can easily imagine many of those clips shown done placed in current time and have the same impact. R.I.P.
In my opinion, *Out of the Past* and *Ace In the Hole* have aged really well. I re-watched both recently, and as you say, they definitely retain their impact. With the right script he was capable of uncommon onscreen menace.
McNulty's Sober Companion Thanks for mentioning those two movies. I’m looking for some quality viewing tonight to distract me from current events. Not familiar with those two and love going into a film brand new. And my way to celebrate a great actor.
@Commander Keen yes Kirk Douglas was a great actor and as well burt Lancaster, Charlton Heston, I cant name all the actors because there is plenty good actors I wii add one more name Robert mitchum. L
Lust for Life. that film changed, and charged my early artwork. I would put it on repeat, and drink. paint more and more. relating more and more. and the alcohol took hold and the film played, deeper and deeper I would fall into my works. Kirk, thank you for the drive. thank you for sparking my mind, and thank you, above all, for the entertaining inspiration. I owe you to no end. sleep well, I'm sure we will meet up later in time.
Interesting fact, I worked in a studio that had made an office out of the set of the Moby Dick tv series that ended up looking alot like a set from 20000 leagues under the sea, that TV series was the last thing Gregory Peck stared in, he was born the same year as Kirk Douglas, interesting parralels and something that brought people from that era closer to me
Here's to one of the greatest actors of all time! Kirk Douglas was not my absolute favorite actor, but I did respect him while he was alive. He was very versatile as far as roles were concerned. Plus, he has inspired me to become a better person. An example of this is when he said, "Men should not run everything". That has encouraged me to value women as not simply, sex objects. Women are of course, human beings, and possess many qualities and characteristics. Rest in peace Kirk, and I hope to meet you in the afterlife.
Rest in Peace Mr. Douglas. I enjoyed your movies. My parents named me after you. It's an honor to be named after you sir. Thank you for all the great movies.
I went to see “The Big Trees” at age 10. My dad came and got me half way thru the film. Fifty yrs later I got home from work and turned on the late show just in time to see the last half. My favorite is “The Man From Snowy River”. “He’s not a boy, he’s a man”. He’ll be around for a long time.
I'm Spartacus! RIP great man and legend! Lived a long rich life of 103 years that any man would be happy with. His great life should be celebrated as I wish we could all live such a wonderful life.

He never gets enough credit for being one of the first superstars who became an actor/producer. He took the power away from the old Hollywood bigwigs, made the right amount of money and played the roles he wanted. He's a true legend.
Kirk Douglas/Issur Danielovitch; actually hated such as vikings ......he was a jewish racist. He hated the white race and helped to destroy them in western Europe and the USA.
@joe green they said the same about Lex Barker . at least that the daughter of Lana Turner said it . Lex Barker , a movie star and a real war hero , recipient of 2 Purple Heart and wounded in WWII . as time goes by , all these accusations proved to be FALSE ! they said the same about Errol Flynn . it proved in court to be FALSE ! and all this alleged rape thing by Kirk is based on a anonymous GOSSIP on a blog . Natalie Wood NEVER named her attacker in case that an real attack occurred . NEVER . the sister of Natalie Wood NEVER named any attacker . so WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU MUMBLING ABOUT ? All you need to see if you do not know his work is 'Paths of Glory' and 'Lonely Are the Brave.' The latter is almost perfect cinema. He was an extraordinarily kind man and I know this from personal experience. He made the world a better place.
