I felt my mom instinct kick in when I saw Hi Ren and it hasn’t gone away. Ren and Chinchilla have a song called How to Be Me about his friend who committed suicide. It’s so unique I have never heard anything quite like it. The live version is what I watched. 😊❤

Not sure........Jenny and Screech tale is very violent. Its a harsh true life tale. Brilliant but a totally different emotional experience. I agree How to be Me would be great.

People aren't used to people being so honest, especially strangers. When it happens, like with REN, our minds really struggle with figuring out how to deal with it. He has the gift of making us feel the way he feels.

Thank you for your genuine heartfelt reaction; you two are beautiful souls. "Chalk Outlines" touches me deeply no matter how many times I watch this video or hear this song. I can very much relate to this and many of his other songs as they describe my daily struggle over the past 25+ years. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. I would recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, the "How to Be Me" live version, as well as their busking sessions in Brighton. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad.
The studio version is also incredible. However, in my personal opinion, it does not come close to the live version. This performance is so much more raw, emotional, and visceral, and Chinchilla's performance here elevates the song to a whole new plain. I wish the live version would be available on Spotify.
Someone (Obj Owl @JoesTheBestInTheWorl) shared his interpretation, I think fittingly so, “The sound of the folding chair opening up fills the empty space with echoes emanating from the walls and then diminishes. Ren uses this to compose the song, with Chalk Outlines representing the empty space that he feels within. Chinchilla, who also emerges from the walls and echos Ren throughout and suitably for an echo, has the last word, leaving a dark empty space. It's dark on the gallows.”
Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics, including Sertraline, until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe, left me an emotional zombie, and the benefits were negligible. I still struggle with my mental health and physical symptoms daily, but I rather feel pain than nothing at all.

If you want to mix it up and do a different vibe, more upbeat - check his band's the Big Push live busking with Ren's amazing singing and Romain's magic guitar solos - I shot the sheriff, bongo bong, Englishman in NY, war pigs or his outstanding rap - bittersweet symphony (verve retake), power, or mixes with another amazing singer Eden Nash in Ocean and Humble - sooo good!

Trust me you're not the only ones who are lost for words with every Ren and Ren /Chinchilla songs. It's difficult to put into words such visceral feelings. Coincidently, my first feeling towards Ren was also wanting to give him a big hug, I live in London so I'm really hoping I get to see him busk one day as he's well known for doing that in Brighton. I may well just hug him from both of us 🤞🤞
The music industry, UK or otherwise, is nowhere near willing to embrace his honesty and truth. And I don’t suspect he’s interested anymore in feeding that particular beast, especially now that we’re lifting him up. ❤

I must of seen way over 100 of these reaction videos about Ren across Hi Ren, Sick Boi, The Tales of Jenny and Screech and Chalk Outlines and How to be Me... This reaction has eclipsed everything I have seen. Watching the emotion you went through is like watching myself in a mirror each time I hear this song...don't be apologetic.... You summed it up perfectly with "What is wrong with you Great Britain" as I can not for the life of me understand how talent like this could of gone completely unknown because he doesn't fit the "Pop Culture Mould" and is to "Real" for the industry - The gift Ren has to touch people with his words and voice is parallel to none...and to think we are just at the start of this journey!! How they met: In an interview, Chinchilla mentioned that Ren messaged her on a social media app and he liked her sound and asked if they could try singing together. He said something like, “no problem if you don’t want to, but if you do, I’d love to meet!”
She had not busked before she met him.

I keep coming back to this reaction. Y'all are wonderful people. If Ren and Chinchilla were a painting Ren would surely be the subject matter of the painting but Chinchilla is definitely the source of light in the painting showcasing all of the shadows cast, but all of the bare parts of Ren that he lets us see she helps us to see it so well. Ren is such a talented artist, so intelligent, so artistic, great guitarist and lyricist, brilliant singer and rapper. I am not into rap but I am drawn to Ren's performances because he is so real. The fan in me wants to tell him to keep producing his music, and the mum in me wants to give him a hug and tell him he will be okay. Regardless, I hope he knows how much he is loved.

I could be wrong, but I think Ren and Chinchilla have been friends for years and they used to busk together in Brighton. She's quite successful on her own as an artist right now and was on stage at festivals in the UK last summer.

I agree that there's something very special about his voice. Apparently he's a Jeff Buckley fan, so I think there's some influence there. He's definitely one of those artists with real integrity, writing songs that actually mean something, and with a voice like that to go with it we already know he's going to go far. I keep comparing him to Eddie Vedder and Jeff Buckley, because he has a unique quality in his voice and his writing that really sets him apart.
