I see people misinterpreting this movie. It’s not about undying love. It’s about remembering things even when it hurts. Because even love that fails is better than never having loved at all. That’s real. Eternal love is usually a fantasy. But doomed love, love that’s just good enough for now, that’s real
Though, I don't disagree with how you interpret the movie, I do respectfully disagree that others are misinterpreting this movie. Art is beautiful because others can relate and interpret it in a million different ways, even hundreds or thousands of years later. For me, and my troublesome relationship at the time, this movie relates to my partner and I being unwilling to let things go, even when sometimes we feel in the moment that we want too. That there will be bad and good, and so must be willing to accept the bad, if we want the good. Others have made it, and so can we. So, undying Love is a relatable theme for myself and others, even if it's not for you or others.
@@tonyc.8667 nah. The message of this film is pretty clear. People simply cannot understand that a love story could be more nuanced than the Disney idea of “true love”.

@@tonyc.8667 that’s not a line of reasoning that means anything. You see what you want to see in the film. That doesn’t change what the film is actually about
Disagree. That is part of the message, but that can be inferred easily in the chunk of the movie's material (i e. Joel realizing that he doesn't want to give his memories up as they are being erased). This closing sequence leaves interpretation much more open. This opens the door for them to re-open their relationship, even if they both know it will fail again. To me, it's pretty clear that this implies that it is more about retrospective "better to have loved than not loved" and it also speaks on whether love is uncompromising even when future failure is imminent.

She left me eventually. She had great reasons. I’ll never blame her. There’s nothing to even “forgive”. Eventually, she did just feel a little trapped. Eventually, “Ok” isn’t enough anymore. Eventually, I couldn’t think of her without breaking down and I wished every second of every day I could forget her and everything I ever felt. But those memories feel like coals(more so ash, really) of a fire that once kept me so warm, and happy, and safe, and secure. I’m still trying to build something with the ash, light a different fire with the coals, but honestly, most days I just really want her back. I hold whatever and wish I could feel that warm again. And then I realize how beautiful it was to have loved her at all, and to have been loved by her, and I feel the pain a little extra, a little bit of tears, and the warmth comes back in spades. I think the movie is beautiful for many reasons. One, the film production was impeccable. Everything from the wardrobe chosen for the script (Clem’s orange jacket and orange hair, and then a transition into blue hair after forgetting Joel). The set choices, the camera tricks, the colors. The transitions from real life to Joel’s mind, which gives you that broken mental state feeling when being in the mind of a man loosing hjs memories. The soundtrack being impeccable, the Melodie’s reflecting the scenes so well. Especially the scene where Joel is a kid and brings Clem along. The melancholy nostalgic tune. The actors played their parts perfectly, the actress playing Clem somehow making sure clems eccentricity still felt natural in every scene. Everything so impeccable. Then what the movie is about itself is beautiful. Although these two don’t really seem to be meant for eachother, the love they experienced was bound to happen. Even if they face an inevitable demise, the birth of their love also inevitable. This same thing being reflected in the Howard’s affair with the receptionist. How when two people have a relationship, it is meant to be even if what it is is tragic and temporary. The poem used for this movie is about a woman who experiences “eternal sunshine” away from society as a pious woman, I believe she’s doing this to avoid engaging in a forbidden affair or something. Although the words of the poem reflect quite the opposite of eternal sunshine. It conveys a bored, saddening, loneliness. The world she forgets and the world forgets her. Perfect poem for this movie. Which is to emphasize how important it is to engage your heart in the world even if it will inevitably be broken.
I absolutely LOVE this movie. I’m thinking about it bc of Ariana’s new album “eternal sunshine” - Joel saying “just wait” connects to Ariana’s song “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” Geez it’s just so good 😭 welp time to rewatch the movie
Oh god. What a movie. Love is so beautiful but it doesnt mean that it has to be romantic all the time. Love is everywhere. Even today that millions peoples are dying ❤ love is eternal ❤️

The mistake people make when falling in love is to search and keep looking for what you once lost. True love only comes once in your life, otherwise it's just company and/or worse, worse is nothing or being alone and learning to be self-sufficient. .

This movie turned 20 years old this year, and i've had the pleasure of watching friends get married and unfortunately some get divorced over that time. My personal opinion is that this film is a perfect relationship test for compatibility between two people. It is clearly able to be interpreted in either positive (the "okay" means "you seem awesome and amazing. And even if you eventually fall out of love with me and break my heart, clearly we 'click' on a deeply emotional level and I'm willing to risk it because you're clearly great.") Or negative ways (the "okay" means, "Yeah, we just listened to our past selves bitching about each other on tape so this is doomed to end badly so let's just call it a day.") And once you two have been together at least a 6 months or a year, it's okay for you to watch with your other and basically determine if at your core you're both optimistic or pessimistic about love/relationships. Over the last 20 years only those of us who're either both optimistic or both pessimistic about love have lasted. Every mixed variation has gotten divorced within 8 years in my experience. I'll be celebrating 13 years married and 17 years together next month. Just an observation.
1 of like 5 movie 🎬 scenes EVER that makes me cry nearly every time I see 😢 it bc it took me too long to figure out me to figure out how much I loved someone else
This movie hits so different when you're in a long term relationship. I watched this with my partner of 4+ years the other day and it's one of the best romances out there imo. They knew how it could end up and are choosing to love anyways, even with all the pain. That's real. Love is a choice you make every day.
This will always be my favorite film~ even as a horror movie lover~ the realness, the rawness.. it's so bare and honest, and true. In a world where love is ironically romanticized...Love is not easy, love is not butterflies and rainbows all of the time.. it's hard, and it can be dark, and it can be the most difficult thing to endure, because of the strength it takes to trust.. but when you find the love that is worth hurting for, worth fighting, and worth compromising for, the wait.. the time, the everything.. it's worth it. ❤️
Zizzy. I wish it wouldn't have happened. I wish we could make more memories together. I loved every moment with you. Now i think dreams are only way in which we're still together. Betrayal isn't what hurts after. These are the memories that hurt.
Its interesting how many people resonate with pain in romantic relationships. Confirmation bias will reflect that everywhere incl. in a movie like this. The same way, siding with the idea of struggle free love will reflect it everywhere too. The mind will then automatically resonate with happy go lucky easy love movies. Our beliefs become the glasses we see the world through. Honestly, struggle free, true love is possible to get, sustain and is so easy, if you have faith that such a thing exists.
Kate Winslet praised the writer for this film cause she once saw a fan with the line "I'm just a f--ked up girl who's looking for my own piece of mind. I'm not perfect." tattooed on her and that's how powerful this scene was and how so many people related to it so much.
When she says I’ll feel bored and trapped and that she makes men feel alive , clearly a borderline dynamic, been there and it’s painful it turns into a love / hate , I hate you don’t leave me relationship total brutality for both parties
Wanna watch this movie but haven't been able to master up the courage. It was suggested to me by the guy I like and he seems to be fascinated with the movie. Funny thing, his face and dressing style also resembles Joel so much (he knows it too btw) that every time I stumble across clips from this movie, I get reminded of him. Why is it bad? Well, because we're friends. Yep, friends. I usually stay by myself unless approached and he is the one who approached me, I enjoyed his company so I reciprocated. We bonded so well, so many hangouts, visiting new places, trying out new food, discussing ideas and getting to know each other. Only for him to realize later on that he didn't have feelings for me. So yeah we're friends. And he's still looking for someone he catches feelings for. It's funny how he's so romantic and full of love to give, it's just not going to be me. I've accepted it but I'm still scared to watch the movie because it'll remind me how much of a Joel he is. Only that I'm not the Clementine he'll go to such lengths for.
Maybe I have to watch this movie again because when I first watched it I absolutely hated it. Even this scene I don’t see it as some cute romantic this of oh I’ll be with you for no matter what I see it as two people who keep going back to each other even if they are no good and are stuck in this toxic loop
That’s kinda what it’s about. It’s about the value of love despite the outcome. As the old saying goes “it’s better to have loved and lost than never have loved at all”. The movie isn’t about true love. It’s not about destiny. It’s about two people who aren’t right for each other being happy that they loved each other even if they aren’t right for each other. And when it all falls apart they don’t need to hate each other, they can be glad they tried and hold onto and treasure the memories they had of when they loved and were loved. They can be glad they had the experience of someone loving them.
if you think we went back together after this scene or wish they were I believe you missed the entire point of the movie. On a side note, this is the one movie that convinced me that Jim Carrey CAN act. I never liked his comedy; the over eccentric characters he would play I always found annoying, but when he plays dramas that's where he shines.

Necesito, realmente necesito que me digas que me quieres y que no me dejarás ir...
❤❤❤
