this film deserved more that just one award. i mean the editing of the film how joel's memory changed from one another, how michel gondry directed this masterpiece. this film was ahead of its time and the academy couldn't recognize that. it was so brilliant.

As if back in 2004 the competition was that much harder. It's nothing to do with that. It simply comes down to the fact that an indie movie like ESOTSM is allowed to bag awards only in few categories, most notably screenplay and supporting actor/actress.
I honestly believed the studio’s didn’t have much faith when it comes to the movies award chances. It was released in March instead of November (the perfect time for award contenders) and the only one really campaigning for the movie was Kate Winslet and her team. It’s amazing the film got that Original Screenplay nomination as well as Best Actress.
My absolute favorite film, and one of the most creative, passionate, beautiful and touching films ever committed to cinema. As the A.V Club said, "it's that rare film that shows us who we are, who we were, and who we are likely to be."
i think michel gondry deserved his part in it, his ideas and impact were very clear throughout the film, and this wouldent have existed without gondry's friend and his ideas.
He should have 'won' for everything he's done so far. Pretty sure he doesn't give a single shit though. It's clear that he does it for the art and not to pat himself on the back
Look boy, you seem to be New here, even if he says he doesn't care about the oscars, he does, and he should, because a lot of people care about the oscars. If charlie wins he gets promotion and promotion means more sales at the cinema and awareness of him, and that would be amazing, because then he can make more movies and the way he wants with not so much of a restriction in budget so
+diego Martinez for writers like Charlie promotion is irrelevant. Most of his movies are low budget and big studios don't fight to buy them cause they know his style is not commercial. And his scripts are so good that he would sell them without any promotion.
You're wrong. He does care about winning, because he doesn't want to loose and winning means more opportunities for him. His films are not low budget at all
+kenneth merced calo Nope. He doesn't. He said numerous times that the Oscars are "phony" and that he doesn't like the Oscars. His latest movie, Anomalisa, had an 8$ millions budget. Coraline, another movie made using stop-motion had a budget of 60$ millions. So yeah, that's pretty much low budget for the same type of film. It doesn't seem like the Oscar gave him the opportunity to produce the movies he wants cause he fought hard to get Anomalisa produced.
One of the rare times the oscar actually went to someone who really deserves it. Kate Winslet should have won that year instead of Hillary Swank. This was also Kate's favorite movie. And Jim should have been nominated too.
Kate Winslet should have won that year by a country mile... I like Swank but damn that was such a BLAND performance in an absolutely bland Eastwood movie...
@@bradtaulbee5928 Sensational? Such a boring performance played by a boring actress with ZERO range. Winslet performance in ESOSM has soooo many shades of greatness that Swank could not even dream of accomplishing
When I watch a movie directed by someone famous, I think about how the director did it. But this one, I watch because Charlie Kaufman wrote it. And think about how he did it.
Like what Sam Jackson said. You can't film anything without the screenwriter. I think it's important to regard both. A director's vision cannot excist without the writer's imprint.
+Gustavo Horn Although best original screenplay is pretty damn good consolation to be fair! Not like they just gave it best sound mixing or something (which it totally would have deserved too)
Are writers THAT undervalued and underappreciated? The screenplay is the most important part of a movie. Without the scripts, directors and producers would have no movies to make, actors would have no roles to play, and audiences would have nothing to see on the screen. Seriously, a "consolation prize"? It's not as if both screenwriting awards are considered to be among the top five awards or something. I have heard that there are fewer stars on the Hollywood walk of Fame than there are for animals. I honestly didn't believe that when I first heard it, but I do now.
Charlie Kaufman should have 4 Academy Awards by now wtf. Adaptation, John Malkovich, Synecdoche: New York, and Eternal Sunshine. And a 5th Oscar for Anomalisa

It's a deep film. This film fascinated a lot of people. It's the movie which shows the power of love in a great way and with sci-fi genre. You can't decide whether it's a romance or a sci-fi coz the director portrayed it equally and beautifully 👍🏼👍🏼🔥💯💯 Plus it's a great turn and suspense

Just as nervous, awkward, and anxious I would have expected after seeing a few of his films. Incredible writer though, and the dude has aged super well.
Eternal Sunshine has gone down as probably one of the most innovatively written and directed films in history. The emotional components...the absurd components....the awe-inspiring complexity of the screenplay...the playfulness...and even the darker components like re-visiting already erased memories....this film was on a whole new level and the only filmmaker who would go on to transcend it even further is non-other than Charlie Kaufman, himself, with the film *Synecdoche, New York,* which Roger Ebert called one of the best films of the decade. Kaufman is a Genius and it's not easy to get such a name. Eternal Sunshine represented the time when he blended all the experimentations of post-modernism in perfect sync with Hollywood sensibilities about love stories and was still able to be completely truthful and honest through the medium, never resorting to depicting the titillation of sex, romance, or young dashing rich actors to do so. In so doing, he's given a thesis on Love and relationships that actually convey wisdom in our lives, making us realize that even if love is tough, nonsensical, and downright repetitively tumultuous, and even dichotomous both its cathartic and non-cathartic elements, it's still something that needs to be truly experienced.
It should've won best screenplay, best editing, best directing and best film. As for the actor nominees: The competition was very, very strong that year. It saddens me that Carrey didn't get nominated, but Clint Eastwood on the other hand did.
John Travolta presented the Original Score award for Finding Neverland and Samuel L Jackson presented this award for Eternal Sunshine. Both movies starred Kate Winslet

Jim Carrey should get nominated at least . His emotional character is just so brilliant
He should've won for The Truman Show

I truly believed he deserved the nomination over Clint Eastwood for Million Dollar Baby in my opinion.
The academy hates Jim Carrey definitely. He has deserved several nominations but he hasn't got it

The Trueman Show
