This movie has one of the greatest jokes in a kids movie ... maybe ever? "If those are the teeth, that 's the tongue. So, that must be the uvula" "Ohhhhhh ... so it's a GIRL house"
This movie is one of few that actually made me cry. When Nebercracker talks the House in her final form I had tears running down my face. She just wanted to be left alone 😭
When I turned 18, I just wanted to watch whatever the hell I wanted regardless if it was an R-rated Tarantino flick or a G or PG-rated Disney animated movie.
I used to watch this movie as a young boy on cool, windy, spooky autumn nights. I made it a little tradition, just for myself, to watch this movie every October from ages like 10-15, and it was a glorious time. My love and affection for this movie are unending.
I remember watching this in cartoon Network when I was a kid. I'm going to be honest this is a very underrated movie in my opinion. And deserves to be a Halloween classic. 🎃
I didn’t expect monster house to hold up as well as it did for me, but ever since I saw this when I was 3, I’ve watched it at least twice EVERY year. I’m 19 now and it’s still a 5 star movie in my heart 😌
I actually played the video game a lot as a kid. Where Thou Art Dead was actually a bonus game. Putting in a game within a game was a novel addition for a movie licensed game at the time.
Glad you finally did this one. A huge fact of this film that gets missed often is that this is from the same creators who went on the make Community (TV Series), Dan Harmon and team.
I didn’t know this movie existed *until* I had kids. We all loved it and I’ve found myself saying “hey, you wanna watch Monster House?” to my girls many times over the years. They still love it.
I have a similar “Free Ticket” experience LOL. A long time ago, back in my teenage years, I found the Tremors movie collection during a trip to Wal-Mart. Upon opening it, I received not just the first four movies on two flip-sided discs, but also two free movie tickets to see Peter Jackson’s remake to King Kong. I guess that since both were properties of Universal Pictures, they decided this would make for a clever marketing gimmick at the time. Exciting, right? Well, the only issue there was that King Kong came out in December of 2005, and I bought the Tremors collection in circa July 2006. Go figure 😅. By the way, always loved Monster House! Another favorite of mine to watch during October.
the select screen for monster house was one of the scariest experiences I had as a kid i remember the house would slowly move and jumpscare me when it turned into the monster at random moments
I totally get what you mean by watching films through your kid's eyes and being able to appreciate it more. Took my 4 year old son to see the Phantom Menace in theaters a few months ago, HE LOVED THAT EXPERIENCE. Really made me appreciate that film more than I had previously.
I remember seeing this in the theaters, and I have always had a major soft spot for it since. Plus, it pioneered a lot of motion/performance capture technology that’s still used in movies today! So that’s a really fun thing to note
I was always too scared to watch this movie growing up. I watched it all the way through for the first last year, and I've grown to really appreciate it. It takes a lot of horror movie tropes and setups and introduces it to kids. It's a perfect horror kids movie. It's scary but not too scary and light, but not too light. I love the movie and Happy Halloween.
I went to see this in the cinema when I was 11 with my mate and it legitimately scared us. Haven't seen this for years and you've made me wanna go back to it.
This is an animated classic of my childhood. I was afraid of Nevercracker and the house. Over time through the film I realized the kids were going to overcome their fears and extinguish the monster. I’ve gone back to it many many many times over the years. It’s wonderful. This would probably be what I would consider a gateway horror movie if I ever have a child or children.
The story was written by Community creator/Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon and Scud the Disposable Assassin creator (and occasional writer/director of Community and Rick and Morty episodes, among other things) Rob Schrab; they are credited with the screenplay alongside Pamela Pettler, who also worked on 9 and Corpse Bride.
I watch this every year, I love monster house, quote it all the time. I think one of the rare movies that uses the motion capture animation and it looks good and I think because they didn’t go the “realistic” route with the designs. It almost looks claymation which adds to the charm.
Iirc, they initially sculpted clay models and then 3d scanned them for the movie. So that's why it has that stop motion look. Honestly helps it stand out from all the other mocap animated films at the time.
I've recently started a top 100 all time favorite movie list and monster house is number 1. My all time favorite movie. When I first saw it in theaters back in 2006, it blew my balls off. Thank you for covering it, Chris.
This film has remarkably beautiful cinematography and it's wild how well it holds up in some ways (like saying cops are useless and that society makes monsters by lashing out at disenfranchised people)
Shame this film never got a sequel where the remains of the Monster House were used in the construction of the hotel being built & the kids had to save the town from a Monster Hotel.
As a dad of a 1.5 & 3 year old I totally get you on enjoying movies differently for seeing how they make your kids feel & react! It’s a beautiful thing that makes me consider “oh that joke was cringe. Genevieve died laughing. It’s for her..:)” & even outside of that just movies I wasn’t as into I have a new appreciation for considering my girls can’t get enough. Being a parent is an amazing experience even for things as little as watching movies, stuff you’d never even think of before having them
I remembered this movie aired on Cartoon Network in some movie block, even if it's not Halloween. Man, it's been years. To this day, it's definitely a good horror film for the family to watch. And yeah, did the neighbors not hear a giant monster house walking through the town, chasing the main characters in the final act of the movie?😅
19 when i saw this at the cinema in '06 and it blew me away. There's so much nostalgic 80s fun in this, and the animation has such beautiful/funny and unique moments
This one is a Halloween classic for me and my family. I remember going to the theaters with me and my godfamily to see this. Now in my mid-twenties i still love it just the same. Great review!
Movies like Monster house, Cars, Chicken little, Madagascar and meet the Robinson really takes me back to mid 2000s when I was in school and would watch these movies whenever they were on tv. In today’s world you can choose whatever you want through streaming and I don’t feel as inclined to watch something over and over again now as I used to.
Funnily enough, despite it having (or at least approaching) the status of a good kids' gateway horror movie, Dan Harmon disliked the final movie because he thought it got TOO scary for kids.
Unrelated to the video and probably won't happen but I would've loved to see your thoughts on the new Tomb Raider series on Netflix. It's a pretty fanservicey show and I vaguely remember you mentioning being a big TR fan in your older videos. My kids didn't live with me but they came over every weekend and no matter what we did during the day, we watched a movie Saturday night. I remember being skeptical when I bought the movie not thinking I would like it but figuring my kids might. It has gone on to be one of my favorite Halloween movies period, and without those family bonding experiences I would've never known how great this movie was.
I watched this for the first time in college, expecting it to be light hearted and a breezy romp. It is a heck of a lot more hard-core than I was expecting. It takes its scares seriously.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed how strange it was that nobody in the neighborhood noticed how that house behaved, especially in the 3rd act when it actually started chasing the kids and then blew up. I know it's an animated kids' movie, but still.
