Laura Branigan had a great voice, my favourite song from her is 'Gloria', it was used in the film Flashdance 1983. This song 'Self Control' is from 1984 and 'Gloria' is from 1982. Yes, very 80s as you said Anthony, a lot of these songs are just so recognisable from that decade aren't they? This song is very good, I haven't actually seen the video that often, so I'm not sure about it. Laura Branigan passed away in 2004 at the very early age of 52, the cause was a cerebral aneurysm, very sad indeed. Thanks for your reaction Anthony. 😊😊
Fun fact: both songs are originally Italian. Gloria is by Umberto Tozzi (1979) and Self Control by Raf (1984). Laura did excellent job by covering them.
William Friedkin directed this video. He just made the best L.A.movie of the 80’s “To live and die in L.A.” and not to mention “The exorcist” oh, and the academy award winning “French connection” with the best car chase scene in cinematic history.
We are here because it's interesting to see how "our" music hits a different generation. We get joy (aka - a hit of dopamine) when you like music we like 😄
There's a song calles María Magdalena that has the same riff. This is called Europop. I'm sure there's more than one song that took something from this one but Ive forgotten.
I don't recall as a teen in the '80s trying to figure out these music videos like Self Control. We just enjoyed the music and watching the music video. Back in the '80s, not every artist was going to spend a million dollars on a music video like Michael Jackson did for Thriller. That's why you see how the sets are cheap, cheap effects, but it doesn't bother me, but then, I'm a fan. They got people flying around on stage, light shows, fireworks now-a-days, but I don't care for the music, so all those effects are wasted. Bands like Journey also have a cheapish-looking music video for Separate Ways and I've never had a problem with it. It's the music that drives everything. This was a song created by RAF an Italian song-writer and singer. Laura sang it and made it her own, at least here in the USA, I don't know globally. The two songs sound about the same, except for RAF singing the original version.
Those videos at least tried to tell a story. Modern videos are bunch of bells and whistles and random, unrelated scenes. Sometimes less is more. I live 80s videos.
I never really thought about it much, but there were a lot of mannequins used in various forms of art in the 80s including a movie by the name Mannequin. I wonder how much of that had to do with both promotion and fear of technological advancements such as robotics and AI. You begin to question what is real. Continued excitement and fear over these same ideas continue today where it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish. Pretty sure that was not the intent behind this video (love Laura Brannigan though). That doll gave me a bit of Chucky vibes.😬
The 80's = great music in so many genres, but some outstanding fails, thankfully those usually stay buried. BUT the videos OMG 🙈 it's painful to watch some, you are SO right! Love your work, your insight & honesty✌🏼
Well this video is just about Sex play. With all the computer effects, your generation has forgotten the basic facts of life, Fun freedom, good Sex, life in general. If you don't get it, you never will.
Great song. Music videos were a new art form and they mostly didn’t seem to know what the fuck to do so they just threw a bunch of distracting, random meaningless shit on the screen.
The video was directed by William Friedkin...He directed The Exorcist and Midnight Cowboy...
Very underrated singer with a great collection of songs
Loved this song circa 1984. Her biggest hit was GLORIA.

If you ever played the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, you've heard this song.

Same with... Rap song from Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby" sampling Queen's "Under Pressure ".

Oh, this video was directed by the same director of The Exorcist. Very Eyes wide shut-esque before that movie ever existed 👁️

Another masterpiece...only in the 80s
The original diddy party
ABRACADABRA by Steve Miller, Big hit in America.

Grande música a dos anos 80.
Those were the 80s 😁
Watch the movie Mannequin 😄

Yes, very "Eyes Wide Shut". Today's generation overthinks everything. Technology is new, human needs, emotions and behavior never change.

It's only meaningless if you lack imagination and take everything literally.
