    How a Drake Fertilises a Duck Egg / Muscovies
    Backyard Muscovies, a duck and a Drake, need to mate if you want fertilised eggs to eventually get ducklings.
    A muscovy duck will lay her egg daily or every second day and once she is happy with the amount of eggs she has laid in her nest (even if you’ve been collecting them or they’re not fertile) she will probably go broody and sit on them for 35 days. If the eggs were fertilised and all went well, the eggs will hatch out with Muscovy Ducklings.
    Happy homesteading

    Thanks! We have a wild Muscovy duck brooding on her clutch under our front window. This was interesting to watch. I am pretty sure she is done laying. LOTS of eggs. Daddy has been around too.

    I have 3 drakes. Well, had. One went to freezer camp yesterday. My sweet boy, Dave, is very gentle with the girls while m Hoss is not as nice. He & some of his ladies are probably going to the single mom across the street because one drake is enough in a large suburban backyard. Their mating practices are a little disconcerting if you've never seen them. This video will help a lot of people understand it.

      I made this video as I was getting many questions from concerned people about ducks they thought were being attacked or drowned by a Drake…..

    At least they are doing it on dry land. Where I live we have ponds here and we have one behind our townhouse and I saw 2 ducks either mating or the one was trying to murder the other by drowning. They were mating in the water.

    the female let's him get on top of her, because she knows her role. when she doesn't want, she runs from the male. the death cases and brutality that people are talking about in the comments occurs if the male is waaay older than the female. if they're around the same age. they breed with no problem.

    What's the different of the 4 toes and 5 toes?

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  Рік тому

      Muscovy ducks and all ducks are supposed to have 4 toes.
      Maybe your ducks have bred with Phalacrocorax auritus (the Double Crested Cormorant) somewhere along there linage? Or are the inbred and it’s a deformity?

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  Рік тому +2

      Approximately 7 months when your females will reach maturity for egg laying. The boys are later to reach maturity, however they are extremely eager, earlier and the more boys you have, the more the Males will have to prove.....It's like they are in High school.
      I will make a Muscovy Duck Video for you.

  • @tylerstrong1776
    @tylerstrong1776 11 місяців тому

    Do u clip one wing to stop them from flying? Ours fly up in trees at night to roost lol. These are my first two I've ever raised and ones really big and the others about half its size so I'm assuming it's a male amd female. They both have little Mohawks so that kind of threw me off bc I was thinking only the male did that and hisses. The smaller one makes a slight chirpy like noise. It is so hard to describe. I came on looking to see if muscovy mate for life and if they can mate with other ducks like Ancona bc he keeps mounting them. None are laying yet though.
