  • We are finally getting into peak egg laying season for our Muscovy duck flock and it's time to get these breeding pens setup so we can separate our two Muscovy drakes with the hens I have selected for them to give myself the best chance of producing the rare Muscovy colors I am hoping to hatch out this year.

my wife and i are enjoying your videos, we live in the northern lower peninsula (Cheboygan) we got 5 muscovy ducks last week; we put them in the barn, and the first night one of them disappeared. that was weird. the other 4 are doing fine, and i've contacted the breeder we got them from; to acquire 2 more hens. i wish i'd known about muscovy ducks years ago, we were/are trying to be self sufficient; and had a large herd of meat goats, my wife had a hard time eating goats we'd raised. i think muscovy ducks woulda been a better choice, they've replaced the goats for meat. i think my wife won't have a problem eating our ducks. what part of west michigan do you folks live on?

good morning ! Another person and myself both have similar problems with our Muscovy ducks. I bought 3 hens to go with a drake I had, and only 1 hen will mate with him. She just finally started laying 2 weeks ago, but the other 2 aren't laying, nor will the drake breed them. He and the laying female bully the other two badly. Any ideas on what might be going on ?

Morning Sheila! Are they all Muscovies?? Are they different colors? Do you know approximate ages of all the birds?

@@FableHillFarm yes, seemingly. One is a lovely lavender , the drake is a black pied, and the other 2 are supposed to be hens the lavender hatched out last fall. 6 months old in Jan, so they'd be 9 months old now. They should be laying by now. The lavender just started laying about 2 weeks ago.
The two young ones looked white when I got them, but they are developing soft reddish coloring lately. Could they have been younger than the seller thought, maybe ? and this is adult plummage coming in ?

Good timing..my muscovies are just about to leave the brooder. I'm trying to figure out exactly where they're going. I bought them for bug control but I'm scared they'll fly away.

You can clip their wings, but the best thing to do is to keep them locked in an area for several weeks so they learn home base and always feed them in there so they want to return. What kind of acreage do you have? Are you in a rural area? Any water nearby?

@@FableHillFarm we have 17 acres but it's long and narrow property and we really only use the front 6. There is a pond further back but we don't venture out there more than once a week. The ducks we really bought to keep in the goat and cow enclosures to eat the flies that accumulate on them. Not sure if it will work well or if they'll just leave us. The plan was to eat them at the end of the year.

Yes, enjoyed the video! Can you share more about breeding ducks for meat? Thinking the drakes will harm the baby ducklings 🤔 but don’t know.

Hi Honey - how is everything going? I am getting over being sick so trying to get caught up on UA-cam and get back to everyone. I will definitely add that to my list of videos to put out as soon as I can! I have never had issues with aggression in my drakes, but I have heard stories of drakes hurting ducklings. I cull for aggression and if I had a drake show aggression towards ducklings, I would not permit him to keep his head lol
