7.3's are pulling machines. Its good to see her doing what she was built to do. I can't wait to get mine back up and running. It sounded Great and the Scenery was awesome. Congrats on the great truck.
Great vid!! Thank you for all the info makes learning about my 7.3 fun
I do 65 when pulling my camper across the country in my obs.. people fail to realize that generally trailer tires are only rated at 65mph... Good video!
Yep, that is another big thing to consider!
😮...I thought trailer tires were rated for 55 mph? Has there been an improvement in the design in trailer tires?
Another good video Joe. Been on the same route many times pulling stock trailer / horses. Ordered my 7.3 with 6 sp stick and really enjoy it especially coming off the blue mountains. Mine is still stock until later on this summer
It's a good drive for sure. Nice country.
How much does your horse trailer way fully loaded and how does the 7.3 do pulling and stopping it?
The scenery is amazing!
Nice video. I've been slowly upgrading my 2001 f250 it's an auto trans unfortunately. My 97 powestroke is my welding rig 5 speed 534k miles basically stock except chip, exhaust the whole way, intake and wicked wheel compressor wheel. Im over weigh in 97 with all my welding gear, has a hard life but still runs pretty damn good. Got another 7.3 engine on the side lines with 187k to put in once my current one fails. Thanks for all your videos.

Any updates on your rig

Privet! Turbo sound nice!
14.8 mpg, hey that's not bad at all, I once had a little 4 cylinder Toyota best I could get was around 18 and it didn't have the power to pull the hat off your head, the Jeep wrangler gets about 14, and those that think I don't know what I'm talking about, I own 2 trucks a 2003 F550 7.3L and a 2016 389 Peterbilt and have professionally driven over 2 1/2 million miles 21 years. Thanks for your professionalism and honest straight forward videos! God bless and be with ya buddy!
I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Love the videos by the way.

Thankyou!
Yeah I'm on my second 7.3. Something with the engines if you keep them below 2000 rpms they do ok on fuel mileage About 65-68 mph with stock size tires and 3.73 gears.
Yup absolutely right me and my dad own a 2001 7.3 on 35s and it does great under 2k rpms
Same. I have 4 inch lift and 35’s if I go 65-68 I get about 15 mpg. If I go 70-72 I get about 12 and if I go 75-80 I get like 10-11

Much appreciated man
I don’t know what mileage you’ve been getting this winter but my 7.3 has been getting about 14 to 15 versus in the summer where I got about 17. So I think 14 is pretty good considering what you were hauling and the winter fuel. Definitely a solid truck man!
That’s right about where I have been this whole winter 14-15 range. I’m read my to be back in summer haha.
Living On Wheels I second that 😂
Greetings from nampa Idaho!! Also have a 7.3 of my own😉
My stock '99.5 F250 7.3 6spd 2WD Xcab Shortbed easily does 21mpg on the highway if I keep RPMs below 2K. That has me running at slightly more than 65mph, but 2K RPMs is key. The turbo starts to kick in above 2K and it wants to eat at higher RPMs.
Staying under 2k definitely makes a big difference
@@LivingOnWheels is there anyone to make the truck more efficient and also make good power? What about the trans?
I live in Northern California. I have my 7.3 1999 dually. You have to hit interstate 80 East . Elevation 6000 feet plus. The sierras can put a hurt on a truck.
Been to Boise Idaho ! You should visit Caldwell Idaho too ! It’s a nice state - texas is the greatest tho !
I drive a 02 f250 7.3 and where I stay is more or less flat land and top speeds on the highways of 65 mph so I get 19 mpg empty and with a load which the heaviest I've pul led is 6,000 lb car and trailer plus the truck is right under 6,000 lb and that gave me 13 mpg but the Cummins pulls a lot better with the fuel but he's got two less cylinders and he might not have as much power on take off as the power strokes or Duramax my truck is 357,567 mi. 100% original still one day I'll get mines up the way yours is I love your truck 👍
That is what I get with my e99 F350 crew cab dually. No mods and 330k on the dash. She's a farm truck and apart from oil changes, she's not very well cared for.
I'm on the High Plains and drive mostly off the freeway at 55 and empty she's gets around 19. When I first bought her a couple of years ago, I had to rent a trailer for my car. Combined trailer/car weight was around 6,000. Because I had just bought the truck and there was a lot of stuff wrong, I again kept my speed around 55 getting home. She did a pretty consistent 13 even with a bad EBPS, old oil, and an air box that has a touch more duct tape than factory spec.
This winter, I was getting around 17. I chalked that up to long idles. I didn't realize that there might be a difference in the fuel.
Yeah. Sticking down to the 55-65 mph range really helps with fuel economy. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave a comment 👍🏻
Yes thats about what I get as well. I have an '02 F-350 SRW with 4R100 with about 265k, all stock except slightly oversized wheels. I took a trip to mountains from coast and back with about 1200 lbs in truck and averaged 19.1 mpg. Since the truck makes max torque at 2k rpm, which is about 72 -73 mph, I keep it there on freeways when possible to get the best mileage and not hold up traffic, however I would not tow that fast.
Shoot..
I'll make that drive just for a cup of coffee, nice part of the planet man.
It really is a pretty great drive!
good job i like you and every thing you do i have 6.0 also 800hp
Thanks! Sounds like you got a sweet rig!
Great video love the time lapse trip. I'm have traced that route and know the hills and grades your talking about. I have been doing a lot of research and trying to find real world users that are not afraid to tell the truth or a non biased info on the parts they buy. I'm running a e99 7.3 2wd dully that is my tow vehicle. My camper is about the same weight empty as your load. I try to stick around the 65mph area. I do a trip to southern California every year from Boise and have since been looking for upgrades that will increase fuel efficiency. My first year was all stock with a tow tune and leaking exhaust manifolds I averaged 9.1 over 1800 miles. I fixed the leaks, added a ford AIS and and tried opti lubes XL formula last year and got to 10.8. This year I will have a new (reman) Hpop from terminator, late model 7.3 intake, spider, turbo with ebpv deleted, and bellowed up pipes, and riff raff fuel lines. I might dump the stock exhaust with cat for a 4" turbo back and see what that turns out. I scale at 23500 truck and trailer depending on what I am doing. Hopefully next year I will be able to swap the e99 stock injectors for the 160cc ones you have. Again thanks for the info and great scenery!
My7.3 E450 shuttle bus pulling a 27' enclosed car trailer weighed 23k combined. She did it but was not too happy climbing through the Appalachian mountains being only 180 or so HP. Really could use an intercooler because its easy to get past 1200°f, I even seen close to 1300° a few times
The vans chassis don’t have intercooolers so that’s not bad
Love your videos lots of information..just bought a 02 f250 7.3 ,245k, auto, 4x4,long bed,new rebuild transmission, new heads and injectors, runs good, just can hear my turbo whine like most I've heard. Any idea how can I make it super loud?
Turbo whistle is all about what compressor wheel you have. A nice billet wheel like KC makes and has in their turbos makes a nice whistle to it. Strait pipe exhaust helps a lot too
Your setup does a fantastic job keeping EGT's down! Maybe it's time for me to switch from DP Tunner!
I was super pleased to see how well it did!
You should be. Going 65 up any hill with the loaded goose I struggle to stay under 1200. If I keep the RPM's up to 2300-2600 it will cool off because of the increased airflow.
@@LivingOnWheels Yeah well I'd keep them exhaust temps lower... I'm an old diesel mechanic and driver all the way back in the 70's. And rear-end temps when pulling grades.
Daniel McQueen lower than 800-1000?
@@LivingOnWheels I don't let my turbo temps get over 800, I'm more about finding the right gear and speed to keep everything a cool as possible... Just the old diesel mechanic in me... and the 7.3 ain't easy to work on so I try not to break stuff :)
My 99 350 has a shift kit also, nothing like a 7.3 that down shifts at 35 mph with no load and level ground.
Empty 14.8 mpg (75 mph)
Loud 17T lb. ??.? mpg (?? mph)
Probebly 9MPG
Through my investigation, the 7.3 powerstroke can bumper pull 14,000 lbs. Hooking a gooseneck trailer to your rig you can increase that tow rate to around 20,000 lbs no problem. Given that gooseneck trailers are more stable than bumper pulled trailers.
I have a 1997 7.3 and 194000k miles I am 2 wheel drive and I pull a big 4 horse goose neck and I never change more then 2 miles per gal over loaded or empty
Im not sure if that means your towing mpg is really good or your empty mpg isnt great haha.
Thank you for the great and informative video. I am so planning a trip towing my camper. I have done a new intercooler (Mishimoto), and new turbo (Garrett GTP38R). I have the stock tunes that came with the hydra, and I have been monitoring my EGTs. I think they are a little high while towing up a grade while in the 25HP Towing tune. EGTs easily reach 1200 degress. Do you think that doing the EBPV delete will help? Thank you in advance. Turbo boos is at about 15 lbs while climbing a curvy grade.
Travel Trailer is about 6,500 lbs
Deleting the valve might help some bug I don’t think a lot. 15 lbs if boost seems a little low to me for that turbo with tunes. I would check for boost leaks, maybe intake filter restriction. Custom tunes might help some too.
@@LivingOnWheels Sounds good. Ill check for boost leaks, and go from there. Thank you so much!
@@jesusmontes2421 any updates?
@@camposvazquez there was a boost leak. Corrected that and now I get over 23psi of boost without a problem.
Hey bro! Long time no talk. A lot of people recommend injectors for the 7.3 and it’s one of the major mods I’ve put off simply because I live in California and don’t know if I could get away with it. Would I be able to upgrade my injectors without risking failing smog? Would I be able to put my tune in stock for the smog test with upgrade injectors? I’ve heard with upgraded injectors the truck needs to stay in a tune to run correctly. Thanks in advance!
Been a while indeed! Unfortunately I think you’re right. Basically all upgraded injectors are single shots and since you have a superduty you would need tuning to run them. I can’t think of a good way around this without swapping injectors for smog testing. Which I’m sure you don’t want to do.
If you can tuck your tuner away for the test then I think you could probably have a clean enough tune to pass smog. As long as your sticks arent crazy big.
@@LivingOnWheels I thought so. I’ll have to do a little more research and contact some tuning companies and see if I can get more info. Thanks man!
@@NoHalfAss might be able to check the different forums too. I’m sure it’s been asked by others.
16ltrs/100 towing is still awesome
What a beautiful drive looks like I-84! So how was the downhill run thru the Cabbage Patch?? A little pushy :)
It actually really surprised me. I didn’t feel like I was getting pushed around at all! Literally not once!
@@LivingOnWheels You need to try going down the Patch with 78,000lbs of taters :) Those run-off ramps do get used a lot :) Rookies! I was 14 the first time i went down that little scary hill!
Daniel McQueen hahaha yeah I was a little worried before hand but the truck performed even better than I expected! Dropping the trans down I hardly even had to use my brakes. If I had an exhaust brake it would’ve been even better!
Your truck did great, I am having problem with my truck on steep inclines it has about 1000 degrees EGT and 15PSI boost I have to down shift at this point I have no throotle left foot on the floor, and I drop down to 40MPH, The truck runs great on flat land 65 to 70 MPH and 800 degrees EGT, I am barely stepping on the gas. Would like to know were is the best place to start troubleshooting this?
I wouldn’t worry to much about 1000*. International rated these engine at steady use up to 1200*. If the truck is 100% stock then 15 psi is pretty normal.
Do you use your POWER TUNE TOY ..TS PERFORMANCE.. If yes ,what position?
I am using a hydra chip with tunes from 1023. Performance tune on the way out and tow tune back.
1997 f350 psd srw cc lwb 4x4 stock . 24,000 lbs 😁
I like the update. Have you looked into the banks trans control or the exhaust brake they make?
Not really the trans control because the tuning on the hydra also tunes the transmission. I have looked at the exhaust brake though and if I towed more often I would definitely be installing that or a similar one.
If you're looking into an exhaust brake, I would stay away from the Banks Brake. I had one on my 2001 7.3 6 speed manual, it rarely worked correctly and when it did, it wasn't very strong. I swapped it out for a Pacbrake and it is much better. It's stronger and rarely has any issues.
Great advice and insight! Thank you for sharing 👍🏻🇺🇸I have a failing/sticky EBPV that doubles as an exhaust brake...hahaha I can not wait to delete that while changing to the D66 turbo at the same time!🇺🇸🇺🇸
Eli Burr good to know. Thanks
Eli Burr What is the model number of the Pacbrake Exhaust Brake you have ? I’m super interested. Thx
What transmission cooler are you running? Nice truck btw
I appreciate it. It had the stock trans cooler for this.
@ Living on wheels , so both of my suicide doors on a F-250 same model and year as yours won’t open just wondering if you can make a video on how to open a stuck door for people with the same problem, oh and I really like what you did to your truck 💯🔥
Hmmm. Ive never actually heard of this problem. Im not sure if you can remove the inner panel or not with it closed. I would Imagine you could.
Its a pretty common thing in my area of New York for the doors to get stuck shut on extended cab pickups, rangers, super dutys, everything. Usually the bottom latch rusts and seizes shut. If the latch isnt too bad you might be able to spray it with some penetrating oil and work it loose. The 05 f250 I just got needs rear doors because the latches are seized solid and the bottoms of the doors are gone, so Im gonna beat on the doors or stick a torch up inside em to cut the latch off if I have to
Justen Heald - You know what I think I should’ve tried that first thx for the tip
I had the same problem with mine.
The latches are actuated by a cable and the plastic ends crap out.
I found this video:
ua-cam.com/video/3tAdn3vXZqg/v-deo.html
He shows how to repair them with bicycle cable parts, or you can order an aluminum cable end kit from Amazon or eBay.
It worked great for both of mine, but was a PITA to get hands into the door spaces.
Did you have a tunes on the truck for this video, or just stock.
During the video the truck had AC 160/0 injectors, a KC300X turbo, and custom tunes from 1023.
@@LivingOnWheels thank you, I am definitely going to get this turbo, I have the injectors and 1023 tunes as well

If your towing get a DMI cushion hitch or a Schuck cushion hitch. It will save your driveline.
Matthew Harris explain please. I’ve never heard of anyone saying that. Especially not my old wisened boss (dudes been trucking everything literally since the 70s)
@@kieran8720 if your towing and its jerking your truck it is very hard on the drivetrain. A cushion hitch lesses the jerks. It makes smoother. My dad used to chopper box wagons with a 1987 f250 with a reese hitch. It jerked the truck big time. We put a schuck cushion hitch in and it smoothed it right out. Made a huge difference. I get around 14 mpg, pulling it.
I could’ve run 75-80 but I didn’t want to. Not to mention, unfortunately there’s not a single highway in OR with speed limits the high.
Is that 14 mpg hand calculated?
@@LivingOnWheels You clearly don't live in Texas there are 85 mph speed limits. Yes this is hand calculated.

2nd 7.3 with bigger turbo & injectors getting worse mileage I have seen documented on utube.

@@dsstaang haha no I do not live in Texas. Currently in this commy state. If your getting those numbers pulling then you’re doing great. I don’t claim that this was the perfect setup. It absolutely put far more power to the ground then a stock truck and a bit more than a stock tuned truck. More power often doesn’t correlate to better mpg but it was plenty of fun to drive and made pulling easier. Based on your use for the truck I’d say you’re fine keeping it as it. I enjoy building but I still wanted to keep reliable/functional use of the truck. That’s why I built it the way I did.

My neighbour has your truck just stock. 373 gear's like mine.
I believe Mine's a little better on mileage because of the 373s & 35s put me in a little higher gear ratio.
@@dsstaang I appreciate it. Mine wasn’t built to crazy but an extra 100-150 HP to the ground over stock was fun. One nice thing about how I built it was I basically didn’t have to even look at my egts unless I had it floored. Which I never needed to towing because of the extra power haha.
Although 35s are heavy. The extra diameter definitely helps the gear ratio.
Do you have the 6.0 trans cooler on there ?
Not yet. It’s definitely on the todo list.
I have a few things to say about this video, your truck has 3.73 gearing I'm assuming... I watched your previous videos before but I don't remember if you said or not.
Yes. It does have 3.73 gearing. What is it that you have to say?
@@LivingOnWheels yeah alright I was just wondering because with that gearing no matter how you slice it and dice it going 75-80 mph turning the engine at 2200-2400 rpms... fuel mileage won't be that great. Where as on the newer diesels with 3.55 gearing going the same speed they're turning 1900-2100 rpms and oddly enough they still don't actually get that great of fuel mileage etheir.
Ray Dornbush yeah. I’ve actually thought about re gearing down to 3.55s since I very rarely tow. The emissions junk really hurts the mpg of the new trucks. Full deleted and not romped around they will definitely out perform. Even if they do get the same mpg you’re getting almost twice the power for it. But yes, anything over 70 and these trucks start dropping mileage.
@@LivingOnWheels just out of curiosity what do you think your truck puts to the ground as far as rear-wheel horsepower and torque with your current setup

33x12.5s

They were right around 3x4x8s
@@LivingOnWheels I hate 3×3×8 .Those are a pain to restack.
Matthew Harris that’s definitely understandable!
The only thing I do not understand is most test done with this truck is on mild incline's and on those type of hills you can go about 75MPH, but with a steep incline this truck produces 230HP with a raw wheel power of 190HP at 380ftlbs of torque there is no way you will do 75MPH up that type of hill with 14K or 20K behind you. The max I can go up a long steep incline is about 40MPH and I have to watch my EGT's and Trans temp. But I wish someone would make a video of what this truck will do. Please note on flat and mild incline's I get speeds of 75MPH too.
This truck isn’t stock which is why on the steep hills I was on I had no problem maintaining 75. I was probably pushing around 300hp to the wheels at this point. Trans temp I did have to watch.
thats your odometer at?
About to role 137k
I drove 65mph for 7 hours straight… when towing 16k lbs, ya, I’m gonna drive at that speed for that long.

Nice. I’ve been looking at a ranch hand for my 2015 f350. Close to 1000$ bucks vs a cheap one like 275$. Still debating. But cool. Love the vids keep it up.
From my experience Ranch Hand his FAR better quality than other cheap brands. I searched a few times a week for months for one to finally pop up for sale on craigslist and I jumped on this one once it did. Was able to grab my guard for $350. That would be my best advice. Just keep a close eye on whats popping up online.
Never go over 2500 rpm if you can help it😟 I’ve got 2 , 7.3s one with close to a million miles 994k ish always ran below 2500 rpm. Helps the engine stay healthy.
Changing your oil helps the mos and I think using a oil bypass filter.
Sand Asylum
You’d have to be MOVING to hit 2500 😂 I think at 70 my 7.3 hardly tacks 2 grand
She was staying under 2500 the whole time except maybe a couple points on the hills. Don’t remember exactly where she was at then. (Maybe 2600 ish) It was cruising 99% of the time right around 1800-1900 the whole time.
Sand asylum, the only time it got close to there was dropping into 3rd going up the hills. Other than that Mines the exact same.
Jonny Simpson not when towing 2500 hits real quick going up hills hauling a good load.

Look into bullet proof it
Company out of Arizona makes special parts for power strokes to improve old products that fail power strokes..
@@randykokko6292 do you know the company name in Arizona? Looking to extend the life of my engine as much as I can, any thing to help do that I would certainly appreciate. Thank you
No saw it on a utube video..for got the name of company
Bullet proof diesel is the name
Yikes 1,100???! Sheshhhhhh poor 7.3 🥺
International rates these engines to be able to run at 1200 degrees continuously. So I’m not worried about 1100 for a matter of seconds.
Pull 13,000 pounds daily,,, only a programmer
You’re luck you didn’t get pulled over. If you have a cdl you’ll get in trouble for being over weight but your you don’t have one you’re never getting one
If I was over the weight limit I might have been concerned about that.
Never seen someone move their top lip like that when they talk..
