- I spend 48 hours off the grid in someone else's Jeep Wrangler and take you along as I explore how they built this Jeep out, what gear they are camping and share my thoughts and options about the build. This Jeep is a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with the 3.6l e-torque engine, it has just over 8500 miles on it so far and it is the owners daily driver.

A tip for the bees: put a stick or a rock in the water so they have something to fly onto and then drink. That way they don't land in the water and drown. I keep a pan of water in my yard for bunnies and bees and have a rock in the center of it that sits just above the water level.

I spied his subwoofer when you were looking through the goose gear compartments in the back. Looks like he even has a decent sound system. That man is Prepared for everything, i love it.

I love all the "kits within kits". That's the only way to truly be organized. Nice rig.
I use all 5.11 tactical pouches to keep organized the MOLLE and GooseGear storage cubbies but when Roam Adventure CO came out with their new fitted Rugged Bags I had to get them. The bags do cost a little space however they also keep everything tight and limits noise while staying organized.
I particularly enjoy the cooking and camping aspects of Brad's videos.
That mess kit is a Boy Scout mess kit...Been using one since 1971...Looks like he's prepared....Good job....I can't get all that in my 2 Door...But I do the same thing...

Of all the brilliant mods I found the magnetic strip with magnetics lights the coolest. Probably the cheapest haha but so practical. Always fun to see how people find different ways to use lighting in the back
Any idea where to get these kind of light?
The dreaded rattling from the goose gear kitchen. He can spay the joints with dry silicon lube and it will quiet it down. 😊

I have been following the build of your sons Tacoma. I liked his Four Wheel Drive camper and reached out to them about a version that is compatible for my older Toyota Tundra. Got a very polite, "No". Did some further research, contacted GFC, and got a "Yes"!!! Hoping to take delivery in late July.
I love seeing problem solvers in Overland builds. Great job.
I remember using an iKamper Mini 2.0 at Moab last year. One night the wind was high, 40+ mph bursts, which is way over the limit. I didn't know until I woke up and saw the iKamper shaking like crazy. When I tried to get out, I noticed the ladder somehow got pulled in under the tent, leaving me stranded inside of it. I ended up getting out of the side window, and carefully climbing down to the hood and ground. That's when I learned the lesson, to enable weather alerts on my iPhone, and to use cords to keep the fold out section of the iKamper from rising, which causes the ladder to pull in towards the Jeep. Never had a problem after that.
I do like that the GFC ladder is completely removable and if the situation requires it I can pull it up into the tent ... sometimes you might have some shady fellow campers / friends LOL

Just saw this old video of yours. I had to chuckle as my AEV JL370 is so similar, save for the lack of overlanding gear. Yeah, the AEV build, with 8100 Bilstein upgrade is a great setup. Hope your friend still has it. For East coast off-roading, mine needed Steersmart parts with Artec and other products to protect the underbelly.
That molle panel on the rhino rack backbone system looks awesome.

“That’s the sound of freedom”…Yes sir it is. I have that same air compressor and was pleasantly surprised at the performance for much less money than most of the others of comparable performance.
That Napa / MaxTrac Compressor was a steal when it first came out for $119. It will out pump the ARB dual compressor but it doesn't have the build quality. The value offered was too good not to try it especially when Napa had a 15% off coupon and free shipping at Christmas 2021. Napa now had the same supplier make it all black and private label and raised the price to $179. If you notice, this manufacturer is also the supplier for other brands like MoreFlate and EZ Flate.
A good, longtime camping buddy's Summer Sierra Yellowjacket trick. If you are camping in a spot with a lot of Yellowjackets, pound a nail into a tree or trees next to your campsite. Hang a piece of raw bacon on a string tied to the nail. Place a bucket of water below the bacon. The yellowjackets will land on the bacon, if it is warm they get greasy, slide off and drop into the bucket. 🙃 Depending on where you camp in the Sierras. Yellowjackets have an affinity for Seqious. They build nests in the soft, spongy wood.
Rear bumper has water built in too! So awesome.
The AEV rear bumper and tire carrier for the JK / JKU did have that feature but, with the JL / JLU the parking assist sensors are in the plastic tanks. If you don't have that feature on your JL they are sealed and can hold water however, it was no the primary intention on the JL variant of this bumper.

I would like to suggest to start using their equipment also like cooking gear. This will also show us several cook options and your thoughts on them.
I offered :) Brad has a lot to cover and knowing how I am with equipment, I know I like to return things in better condition than received when I borrowed them ... that can be a lot of work and Brad is a busy guy and I think he feels the same about borrowed equipment.
Great tour and learned a lot from Rich. That’s why this format is helpful. Although felt like going through his closet 😅
I liked the gas caddy and rear bumper best. One great option that all OEM fail to offer is an auxiliary gas tank, like the first generation Bronco. The caddy is a solid solution instead of a Jerry can or rotopax.
So good to see a very lean looking but well equiped rig, everything has its place but zero clutter. I think its a good idea to do this with willing peoples rigs as there are only so many things that come to us, whilst others that we can learn from, always another permutation great idea Brad and cheaper than switching to a new rig to entertain your subscribers!. So Socal rig owners I hope they contact you. Best wishes great to see.
I work for Jeep. With that AEV upgrade ($20k) and those extra accessories; that’s a easy $100K plus overland Jeep. Rich is an amazing guy to let him borrow it.

A very nice Jeep! A trusting man to give the starting button to Brad!
He has left his 392 keys in my hands multiple times.
I also keep the passenger side of my jeep free of gear so that I can sleep in the jeep during bad weather or noisy conditions. I use the 60% seat delete goose gear platform. I slide the passenger seat forward and fill in the gap with a duffle bag of clothes. I use an inflatable backpacking mattress with egg crate foam and it is quite comfortable. When conditions are favorable I sleep upstairs in the Ursa Minor top.
We think alike. The GFC is a great tent and in great to moderate wind / cold conditions is excellent but in 40 mph winds or sleet / snow, climbing into the cabin is nice. The window blackout make it great even during the day but having A/C or heater at the turn of a key is a comfortable option.
This was a fun video. I’m in the process of deciding what kind of platform to build an overlander off of and your videos are a lot of useful knowledge.

Ah Yes, the CA Yellow jackets. I used to take a jug of water just to pour in a very shallow pan at an angle just for them so theyd stop dive bombing my beverage too. Great review of gear and setup. Like the ditch light tandem.

Titan fuel tanks makes an external fuel tank for wranglers. It's called the trail trekker II. It holds just over 12 gallons of gas. mounts the same way.

I have the same battery in my 2012 Rubicon and must say it would never be my choice again. Hope he has better luck, mine is 3 years old in August and with Covid didn't use it much for the first 2 years but it runs down in the garage in about 4 to 5 days. Reason for buying it in the first place was Optima reputation and the reserve capacity they talked about. May of gotten a bad one but doubt the 3 year warranty is much good with less than 4 months left, not to mention here in Harrison, AR not sure of a dealer. Think Autozone might sell them, have to check. Will charge up but then after a few days drops to 10.2 or so volts. The lessons that cost you money, you never forget. Smile!

I have been running Optima batteries for almost a decade and AGM batteries are not like traditional lead acid batteries and cannot be cycled under 11 volts and recover without issues. I would be checking for a draw if you are having it die. The jeeps with the dual battery system are notorious for having the secondary battery fail causing other charging or starting related issues. Its rare that a battery dying that is properly charged is a result of the battery itself.

Thank you and I do love STUFF! I think that is part of the journey in building out a rig like this. We all want all the things and then some of thee things get in the way and better things come along and then we find scaling back has some benefits too.

One of the bees was doing a back stroke… (the water) that was a slick idea, never thought of that.
I love the storage system but I would definitely make some spreadsheet on what each place has and have color coded bag or something to know what each one has because trying to remember one specific thing and having to open each place or bag that would be a hassle
I know its hard to see but most of the bags from 5.11 are actually "webbed" so you can see the contents. Even so, I honestly rarely have to think about it as I can see through the bag's webbing and know which compartment they are in. I also frequently clean and organize every few months so its pretty fresh in mind & straight forward.
The 6 webbed bags are 5.11 Tactical Convoy PKG cubes - They come in 3 sizes ("Sierra"- small, "Mike"- medium, "Lima"- large) and were meant to be suitcase organizers.
The 2 other bags are 5.11 Tactical DOPP kits - These are basically toiletry kits named after the '20's Military issued bags made by Charles Doppelt.

Excellent idea for future videos. I really like the “A” pillar lighting combo. I just installed a pair of squadron pros and I am definitely adding a pair of S1 lights installed like in the video. Thanks for that video detail.
The gfc tent is light which probably helps with this jeeps driving dynamics. I wanted one but I was concerned about what appeared to be the very easily removed and stolen tent. I asked the gfc owner to please consider changing the bracket to make it harder to steal the tent. He said it worked for him and mocked me very rudely. He eventually apologized but it was shocking to experience someone who seems to care for others needs and life so little.
Doesn’t surprise me. GFC has ran at least two “giveaways” that have been scams. Shady company. A free tent that ended up going to one of their personal friends and a giveaway truck/tent package and then after deadline said “we are going to loan it out, not give it away.” And then never did that either. Just giveaways to get more followers online.
I would never even consider them and try to warn others.

Very nice, and kinda the idea lurking in the back of my mind as my first Jeep! Just waiting to see if escrow closes on a piece of property I'm selling, then will put some serious thought into it. Sting Gray is just what I'm thinking about, but I hear that color has been replaced with Anvil for the 2024 4Xe.
Question...just how much headroom for sleeping is there behind the front seats? I'm six foot even, and know if I go with the hybrid model I'll have to build a platform in the back to match the battery height, but that will also provide a little storage space to boot.
No doubt those Cobra's had a lock on you just because they could! Many years ago a friend went for a ride in a NASA F-18 out of Edwards, and his buddy in the front seat locked onto a clueless motorhome driving down the Owen's Valley.
I am 5'7" and have no issue with the passenger seat seat back completely but the pouches do crowd me a little when I'm laying on my back.. As Brad pointed out my Rugged Radio GMRS radio does limits the seats forward movement but without that you can slide the seat up 7-8" more and tilt it forward. I am happy to measure it next time I'm messing with my GMRS or wring something.

That NAPA Maxi Trac compressor will out work the more expensive brand name compressors for a 1/5th of the cost
I have had it almost 2 years and its been a workhorse 35-37" tires is a 10 minute venture from stopping the Jeep to rolling out.
Sometimes a cold hot dog for dinner actually hits the spot when you’re tired😎
Nice clean setup. Love an AEV build too. All the way down to the skid plate can’t go wrong. What is the total length if you had to sleep inside?(Edit: front pax seat pulled all the way, back halfway 74” on the intewebs; not sure with the GMRS unit)

I actually quite enjoyed it. Brad knew about a lot of the obvious external mods, but seeing him discover a lot of the loadout and little details of what I did to make things better for myself and seeing the thought process he went through to find them was very gratifying.

So now that you have driven a Jeep with the AEV suspension and it being fully loaded, what were your thoughts? I recall a video you did a few years ago where you drove several Jeeps with different suspensions side by side and said the AEV was a little too harsh - but all of those Jeeps were relatively stock and empty of any additional gear. Curious if that opinion stands or if it is different with a heavier load as in this one.
Hi I have the AEV Dual Sport RT (The one with the Bilstein 5100s) on my JLU EcoDiesel and the ride was quite good, until the 5100s wore out after about 24000 miles. I load up my Jeep like the one in this video, and I'm certain I was over GVWR many times which is why the shocks wore out. Overt time I upgraded the AEV standard springs to the AEV Heavy Duty springs and replaced the Bilstein 5100s with Falcon 3.3 Adj Shocks. Now the ride is pretty stiff when unloaded but pretty nice when all loaded up.
If you watch the video again, you'll noticed the Jeep does have a lot of body sway over small bump at the 6:05 mark, this was my experience too on the AEV standard springs

Ahhhhh.......the bee's wanting water. That has happened to me a few times in desert zones. I figured out that same solution ! Yep......put out a water offering away from camp and that was it ! The other interesting thing that happened when I did that, Ants ! Ants went for the water as well. But they would get into the water and be trapped. Then I noticed the bees would get their drink, then scoop up a load of ants and fly off with them. Drink and a meal I guess.
Was out in Anza this past Feb for the first time. That place gets w i n d !!! But that's the part of what makes these places the landscape they are, like Moab as well. mmmmmmmm........sometimes we have to become one with those environments.
I recently did a lo-pro RTT mount on my JKU, customizing the mounting with the old style Rhino skeleton and a 7 inch profile Roof Nest. Sooooo much better than a rack (IMHO), but a lot more work.

The only thing technically on the Jeep is the rooftop tent; so, I would have to say the rooftop tent. 😀😂😀😂😀😂🤪🤪. Seriously, I liked the front bumper. As an idea, I put a ScanGauge II in my Colorado. Gives me the ability to monitor some additional engine parameters and also is a code reader.
The Stinger radio is capable of showing 10 additional gauges that are user defined so long as they can be read via generic OBDII on the Wrangler's CAN BUS network.
Go Fast Campers needs to make a topper for the JKs.

6200lbs boy that’s thick. These Jeep really should have a 5.7 option for a couple thousand upgrade over the V6
They have the 6.2L ... but with the 6.2L powertrain you pick up even more weight and no more GAWR. 6200 is the GAWR for the 3.6L eTorque and while its heavy its still within capacity. Gears will help.

Hey Brad! How'd your shopping trip go once you got home? LOL! We liked a few of the itmes shown here however, our favorite is definitely the AEV rear tire carrier with the 10 gallons of gas!

I have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler jk, 3.8L with 35s, and it feels super sluggish even with an upgraded intake. I want to regear but need to know more about it. Do you have recommendations and where I should take it to get regeared? my goal is to get it all built for Overlanding and hunting in the next couple of years, but I need it to run smoothly before anything; thanks!
The bees are probably solitaries in the rock face behind you, and, yeah, as said in other comments, stick a few rocks in there it saves them from drowning.
few good ideas in th Jeep. It's good to see how other people set their vehicles up and see what works and what doesn't, better to live a day/night in their shoes as it were...

Really nice skid plate
Artec bellypans are top notch. You get 1/4" aluminum (0.250") instead of the 16 gauge (0.060") steel and increased protection. More skid surface area, new heavier-duty crossmember, oil pan, transmission pan and exhaust y-pipe protection for just 11 lbs. more.
@@exhaustinglifedefinitely extra beef for more protection. I went with the under cloak last year and love it. Similar idea, it goes the whole length of the under carriage.

I have my radio there, but I can’t drop the glove box all the way open to get at the cabin filter in my bronco.
I clears fine on the Jeep but he nice thing about the magnetic mount is that you can move it to another spot if you need to without much effort
Goose Gear seat delete is something that I would do if I didn't have to take people in a Unlimited. I love the front bumper and the back tire with gas can.
Does he have any more information on what he uses for mounting the ladder to the back bone system?

It is one of 2 prototypes by Rhino-Rack. I had it on display for them at the SEMA 2022 show and was doing some durability testing and it should be coming to market very soon.

The Magnetic pads are from Scosche. The long one mounted on the rear window is called the MagicMount Elite Bar magnetic mount and the rear tailgate is MagicMount Pro.

Had a question about how the RTT sits on the Rhino Rack backbone 3. Btw I just order the backbone kit on the trail recon site. Is there a cross bar system between the RTT and the Rhino Mounts?

Yes there is. It is a GFC part. "RTT Aftermarket Rack Mount Kit." You only need 2 bars but the 3rd is just added peace of mind.
I would love to mount my RTT in the way shown here instead of the rhino rack vortex cross bars for better garage clearance. it does appear he used the bars from the GFC "aftermarket rack mount kit" but i wonder if all the RTTs that have those channels along the sides of the RTTs are standard so maybe i can buy the GFC kit to strap my RTT on to the backbone bases like done here. my tent is not a GFC.
great setup. any word on when that backbone molle is releasing. it would great to mount my roofnest ladder to as well. would love more info on how exactly the tent was mounted directly to the backbone as well.

Hi Brad, I noticed the Stinger radio. It reminded me that you put one in recently. In your last JK video, I noticed that the Stinger radio was not in the JK. My wife and I are considering that radio. May I ask you what your thoughts are?
I live in the Sonoran Desert and mitigate bees when out camping by filling a shallow pan with water for them. They flock to it (and away from me) like flies to honey. Just be sure to include a few rocks they can use to climb out in case they fall into the water. Works every time.
Hi Brad - Did you notice any leaking around the fuel caddy? I have the same fuel caddy and it leaks terribly from the cap. AEV says it's normal, but I've never encountered anyone on the trail to compare notes with. Could you find out from Rich and post his reply? It would be greatly appreciatee
