Here’s hoping they actually fix the issues you highlighted.
I still don’t see it being worth the price. They’re a few years too late with all of the much cheaper alternatives
While I am glad this addresses the black level issues, this also does expose the HORRENDOUS over saturation of the image's green channel that you'd see on cheap HDMI adapters like those for the wii.
Like I said on MVG's video I really do hope we get a MK-II of the XBHD to address these issues, as I genuinely do love the idea of this being a 2-in-1 solution for both capturing footage and also making LAN parties much more easier to manage. As the old saying goes: If at first you don't succeed, try again.
Definitely something I hope gets fixed. $189.99 is a steep price for an inherently flawed device with so many problems.
I'm hoping everything gets ironed out easily and the adapter becomes the gold standard for OG Xbox accessories. Being able to bring ONE Xbox and plug in three others to it without any need for a crossover ethernet cable or switch/router to create a LAN is awesome.
I knew it would likely be a full vs limited range thing once everyone was talking about it on MVG's video. Hopefully they do fix it! I think this adapter would be decent if the video output was correct, and if the price were a bit lower. If you don't need 2 HDMI ports and the ethernet ports, the Xbox2HDMI is the way to go. Much cheaper and works great
"Price was waaaayyyyy lower" lol
I've got a Electron Shepherd on the way - do you know what surround sound is like on it?
@@MatWilson2612 I don't use surround sound but I've heard that it works great too. The early revisions of the adapter didn't work with 1.0 Xboxes with surround sound but they fixed it so now it works with all Xboxes
This was my exact thoughts when I saw MVGs video, But I would still see it as a flaw with the device. All these older consoles did output to the legal- or limited range. And so should the adapter. Also, considering people don't know how to deal with these settings it's much better with a washed out image, rather than a cruched image for those who don't set their RGB-output up proporly. (Let me guess, 99% of people). Anyway, I still find the price of the device a bit crazy, I will stick with component > GBS-C instead. That device has line-doubling, motion adaptive de-interlacing, advanced integer scaling options for 1080p... for the low price of 65$ from Ali Express.
It's mind-boggling that this thing costs as much as it does while offering so little, and with such a glaring flaw. The GCHD is a line-doubler and costs less. Why couldn't EON fit that feature into the XBHD that costs more?
Great review! I'd love to send you one of my Xbox2HDMI adapters so you can see what all the hype is about!⚡
I bought the XBOX2HDMI along with the Wii2HDMI adapter and it works perfectly and I have been loving it, thanks!
good old full vs limited strikes again
Every time
it is still way too expensive a product to make reviewers not know that they had to set their TV and capture to full range RGB for a console that never used that in the first place
All the contrary, i think black crush means the Xbox is outputting full range RGB and the device is limiting the rgb levels to limited rgb. That is why the TV´s and capture cards will default to limited intead or full range rgb.
@jsr734 the Xbox doesn't have full or limited range, it's the hdmi conversion that does it
Yeah this makes a lot of sense. I fed it through the Tink 5x and it looked great on my monitor. Didn't even think to turn my TV on and see how it faired.
how? tink5x doesnt have hdmi input
HDMI to component box
I recently got a really good hdmi to comp converter@@Spazbo4
Why go from analog to digital with the Eon adapter, then back from digital to analog with another converter, just to pipe it into a Tink 5X? There's plenty of component out options for Xbox that can go directly into the Tink 5X and bypass all the extra conversions.
I have the Xbox2Wii adapter mentioned at the end of this video, that works great.
I have the Xbox2HDMI adapter. Didn't have any visual problems unlike this device. Tested 480i to 720p Xbox games. All displayed well.
John Hancock showed both HDMI signals at the same time, one monitor showed correct colors and the other monitor was dark.
I noticed that too
That shit killed me, "Why can't I see Sgt. Johnson?" I really wish they'd make a snes jr hdmi adapter
I saw Macho Nacho teardown, it's a piece of trash. They even scrapped the chips.
I'm just lucky I found an official Xbox Component cable at a local pawn shop I visit regularly for only $20.
When i first saw reviews for this i actually had the same thinking. Back in 2010's i had a GTX 670 that had the same issue. Every driver update it would change my video range from full to limited on my pc. But my brain has gotten older and i totally forgot about this. But my take on it is how they will respond since a ton of these are already in the wild. This isn't like a $20 or $40 piece of hardware it's almost $200. I don't expect everything to be flawless, but companies seem to be forgetting the simple things. Sending copies out to testers help with you know testing the product on more devices. I think they used it on their limited devices and found it worked fine. Or there was an update later in the dev cycle and something happened. Not everyone can change this setting on their display. I have a samsung Q80T and I don't have that setting. But Samsung does have a service menu but you need the full remote control which they don't give you have to buy it separately.
As always good video and here's hoping Eon is a good company and offer a fix for the people that bought this product already and pull any thats already on sale.
I’m a massive diehard fan of OG Xbox. I hope this can be improved in a new revision. Anything to make OG Xbox more accessible now, the better.
i got reccomended this. great job doing the video
Thanks!
I picked up a pretty cheap xbox hdmi cable back in the day.
However, the best HDMI output for an og xbox requires modifications to the console as far as I know. I think it actually has a digital video signal that can be directly yoinked before it is converted to analogue.
I love seeing someone still playing Xbox games with the Fatty controller. It was so comfortable back then!
I had a feeling the Limited vs full range would be the culprit. Hopefully this can be patched with a firmware update.
Hey Eposvox, can you recommend a decent GC component cable please? :)
Honestly no. I have the official ones and the Carby cables and the Carby have a noise problem, moving pattern down the frame
WELL WELL WELL.
Let's see how many people walk back their hot takes on this thing :3.
fixing the HDMI black level doesn't work on most samsung TVs.
Samsung only enables this feature when an RGB signal is incoming. but as soon as YCbCr is incoming it is greyed out :( So if the EON Adapter doesn't transcode to RGB you're fucked on most Samsung TVs
You can get a network switch for like 20 bucks with the other adapter and call it a day. Seems very much not worth an extra $120, especially considering the issues with brightness.
What do you think about the Xbox2HDMI (newest model)? I got an OG Xbox version 1.0 and it works amazing. How does that one compares to the EON? Thanks for the details on the video.
We need comparisons
I have the xbox2hdmi and find no need to explore other options. Never mind one that is so much more expensive…
@@RedHorseAdventures I have the Xbox2HDMI too and it is truly a marvel.
For component cables what scaler do you recommend?
This is good to know because black crush on devices does truly suck when it happens
I have the Hyperkin HDMI cables officially licenced by Microsoft. I also run it through an M classic upscaler. It looks awesome. I don't need something for a capture card or lan parties.
I'll let Eon know the stop making it, as you're already covered.
If you do the Hyperkin with the Mcable it is too dark on OG Xbox. I have not tried with the Mclassic...
@@bushcry1 to me it looks good, the M classic is a newer device compared to the M cables. The M classic also makes the Nintendo Switch look more vibrant.
Great job sir!
Thank you kindly!
If EON can get a 2nd revision out that has all issues resolved I will happily purchase this right away.
You fixed the cost?
Could this potentially be "fixed" with an EDID emulator? In between this thing and your TV?
It'd likely confuse the EDID emulator for the same reasons and output the same honestly.
There is a bios mod that forces a minimum of 480p
Just like I pointed out in my vid lol glad to see I'm not the only one having it show up fine.
What's the game @ 1:21? Thanks! And great coverage!
James Cameron’s Dark Angel
That's one expensive Solar Eclipse simulator box.
if its competition is $40, they just added a 10/100 hub.. should be $60 max, I would buy 2
Anyone know what the game being played at 1:27 is ?
James Cameron’s Dark Angel
@@EposVox Oh wow you could have given me a thousand years and I'd never have guessed that ha thanks for the reply
This sort of issue on an adapter with this sort of premium price point and from a company with shady marketing and build quality issues in the past = hard pass.
theres a non powered hdmi adapter for low as $13 "from china" plug and play , personally tested on 1.0 1.0 1.4 and 1.6 awesome video on 70" 4k tv and 32" 720p tv , it is using MS9288A chip that wii2hdmi xbox2hdmi and many others use
Could you share a link to it?
Someone know the name of the game his playing at min 1:21?
James Cameron's Dark Angel
@@EposVoxthank you some much
TBH I see a lot of these sort of boutique products with headscratcher technical issues in the audio hardware world. They're expensive and often have bizarre menu systems, inconvenient or outright dumb physical design issues, or just over complicate something that cheaper devices do in a simple fashion. For what you're getting out of this particular adapter, I honestly think the price is fine. But yeah, they really need to do a 2nd revision that addresses the output range issue because it frankly shouldn't be an issue. I know it's a complex problem that if they could solve easily they would have, but at the same time, just because a product is worth paying a premium for doesn't mean the people selling it should get a pass or cut corners on basic features. It seems like they're targeting people running LANs or capturing footage to begin with, so I guess they just assumed giving those folks full range and hoping they can figure it out makes sense. But it being so consumer friendly otherwise compared to existing HDMI mods makes it attractive to people with a lot of money to spend and not a lot of technical expertise...
What's the game at 7:30? It looks really cool.
Unreal Championship, an Unreal Tournament spinoff
@@EposVox Cool, thanks!
You mean there's only ONE?
Yes, otherwise it functions as intended
My friend where are now in late 2023. Selling something like this for 200 dollars without any kind of scaling is not acceptable
Pinecil, good flux and leaded solder. You'll have those mods installed in no time.
I have a good soldering iron. Tools are not the problem.
@@EposVox Flux, leaded solder then. Leaded solder helps a ton
again, gear is not the issue
@@EposVox Well best of luck to you. Its really not as hard as people think.
So how does the Xbox2HDMI compare to the Pound cable/adapter?
We’ll all pound cables are a joke so literally anything is better
Stretched widescreen is an abomination!
Nothing in this video showed stretched aspect ratios…
This is not a fix
How to fix it? Buy a much better superior device! The retrotink! which basically allows any console ever to work!
And also requires figuring out and setting your RGB Range correctly, just FYI :P
@@EposVox and yet... still better than this limited EON device 🤣
Don't buy it!
...there! It's fixed. 🤯😊
MVG must feel pretty bad rn lol
Not really? He's correct about it being a problem
@@EposVoxOn a consumer level for sure, but acting like a know-it-all, and not recognizing a common bug due to limited / full rgb range, is not a great look xD I love his content, but it looks like video signals aren't his strong suit.
I didn’t get the feeling he was acting like a know-it-all in his video. It was pretty fair IMO
So all those reviews didn't even test it probably, good to know not to trust these reviewers.
I would not say this is a failure from reviewers to test it properly, just a lack of willingness to explore the very real problem. Outputting RGB-limited with full RGB range is simply wrong. Yeah it’s not hard to validate this as the issue, but it’s still an issue with the product. What typical consumer would want to spend $200 on a product that doesn’t perform basic functions like matching the video input RGB range? Of course this can be corrected with different video sink settings / EDID flags, but the reviewers are testing it like an average consumer would use it.
The reviewers tested it just fine. This is on EON for releasing a ~$200 product that doesn't work right out-of-the-box, in a market where similar products cost ~$40 and don't suffer from the same issue.
I'm planning on using monster cables and a gbs control, cheaper than this and looks much much better, but yeah the xbox2hdmi is a great pick as well, really cheap in comparison and very easy plug and play solution, I'd go with that but I want the upscaled image of a line doubler
I won’t touch monster cables these days
