The way your stop block is set up kick back and or a piece of wood flying up is inevitable eventually, you'll definitely want to stop the blade at the bottom if set up like this. The stop block should be on the left where you are holding the workpiece down leaving the offcut on the right of the blade to fall away naturally.
In the case of using a stop block the size of the block is a sure way to get kick back. Where when the blade is retracting the saw teeth will grab the work piece and draw it towards the fence. It can cause the blade to stall or even throw it towards you causing potential injury. I use a fairly thin strip for the stop block. Be sure to leave a bit space at the bottom against the table to prevent sawdust from collecting thus ruining the exact measurement.
