Are resellers bad for the retro community, let me know. Sooner or later we're all gonna be videogame resellers since we can't take this stuff with us after we're gone.

    Show-Me Retro,
Selling something you don't want anymore. Fair intentions. Going out with the intent to buy something cheap to sell it again (usually for more)... Reseller. But again, intentions play a big role. I think you laid out your intentions quite clearly, and receipts showing user ratings are a good way to back up the words you spoke in this video. Not totality, but strong to your point.
I often ask myself, where is the line? I think that line is different for everyone. Here's my line... People who buy something out at retail, usually as much as, or all the stock they can, often times during pre-order periods, just to sell it for way over retail price, because they know people desperately want it, that's a reseller I can't get behind. The term scalping is often thrown into that mix as well. This is the reason I never owned a PS5 or the latest Xbox. It took too long for retailers to catch up to the scalping, and I eventually became disinterested.
Grossly profiting off of people's emotions? That's where I draw my line.
At the end of the day, I think most people with a conscience eventually take that long look in the mirror to evaluate what their intentions are. You shared that look with us, and I think that's cool. To say all resellers are bad is folly. Stereotyping will always exist, because it's easy. But the wise will seek the truth behind the individual.
    Have a great one!
    vgv

I had intentions on mentioning scalping but forgot which is a whole different video. There's is a line like you said and I don't think I ever cross that. If I didn't feel good about whatvinwas doing, no amount of money would keep me doing it. As long as I'm having fun and yhe people I'm selling to are happy I will continue tonne a reseller.

Yes, your the reason why casual players can’t find used games for $10 and end up getting screwed buying it off you for $80

I think there are good and bad people in sales in general. I think how you conduct yourself ethically is what’s most important. If you can provide a product to someone where they’re satisfied then I don’t see where the harm is.
Reselling to me is cleansing. I hate having things I don’t need and if it can provide someone else with joy at a cheaper cost then great. There’s also a recycle factor that goes into reselling - you’re hypothetically using less waste that would find it’s way to a landfill eventually.

    • @show-me-retro
      @show-me-retro  Рік тому +1

Yeah, it's about being ethical and just treating folks with respect. And I agree about the cleansing aspect of reselling, it feels good to get rid of stuff... especially as I get older

I appreciate the honest reflection in this video. The word scumbag is harsh and I don't consider all resellers scumbags, but it's tough to collect in today's market, the competition is crazy. It's not just video games, almost everything is snatched and marked up now so the deals for true collectors have dried up. Vinyl records, DVDs, VHS, sneakers, concert t-shirts, etc... all of these have become targets for resellers. Once people figured out that selling on the internet was not that hard the barriers came down. I think the turning point was when Facebook killed Craigslist. Everyone is on Facebook and it made the whole process of selling items much less intimidating.
We are never going back to the way that it was 5-10 years ago, those days are over, but I am glad I got what I wanted back then. I am certain that I would not have half of what I have if I was trying to build a collection now.

You're right, things are never going to be the way they used to be. Everyone thinks anything from 1990 and earlier is worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Great video Pat. When I watch you and listen to you talk it makes me feel like I’m back home. When I resell items, my pricing can change radically based on who is wanting to buy it. If it’s someone I don’t care for, I may ask well over what it’s worth, yet 1 minute later a young kid might see it and I will just give it to him for free. Just because of his genuine excitement over it. (I got that from my dad…I’ve given away more than I’ve ever sold at yard sales for that reason). Just like making kids happy.

Nice video. Not a collector/seller. Personally, if someone lucked out in finding a pricey item at a low price, I don't think it's wrong to sell that item at market or even try to get above. People want to maximize their return. But..., There are nice ways to do it and scumbag. As someone else mentioned, I have issues with those that buy new stock completely up and resell that at insane prices.

100% do not think of YOU as a scumbag reseller, never once. You even make a great point here in how you lose sleep if you feel you've given somebody a bad deal and that's a sign of a good person. There are certainly those out there who do fall into that "scumbag" label as they don't care and they'll do whatever it takes to make money and turn a profit, and in some cases brag about it. There's often a very clear-cut difference between a reseller who's legit flipping towards a goal and also trying to hook people up with a good deal and there's nothing wrong with making money. But again, there are those bad apples ruining the bunch and giving it a bad rep, I mean look at scalpers, they make the effort to mold the market to cheat people solely for profit.
Also, shoot us a message if you have a moment--someone has been trying to reach out to you.

I appreciate your original comment and I meant what I said about feeling bad. The video probably should have been redone to get my point across better but I just was trying to give a different perspective on resellers. I also should have touched on scalpers but forgot to mention it and didn't have time to re-shoot. Thanks for taking tje time to share your thoughts 🙏

Pat, I would go to you if I was looking to buy some retro gaming merch because I trust your opinion on this area. So, no I don't think you're a scumbag or your pricing is out of line. You should make a profit after putting in the time to refurbish a used item. I think that's fair.

    • @show-me-retro

Thanks Paul. 75% of what I buy needs something done to it to make it worth selling so I appreciate you understanding where I'm coming from.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this and being honest. Yeah, I never thought of yourself or like GOT boys being what I would call Sumbag resellers. The guys who jack up the prices of things that are above market is where the scumbag aspect comes into play. That is what is affecting the market, we as consumers just need to not buy when it's so high and try and force the margin to come down to a more resonable level.

Totally agree, I tell people all.the time to not be overcome with fomo and spend more than something is worth... case in point Metroid Prime Remastered. A penny over $40 us tax is too much. Like you said, maybe if everyone stops paying high prices then prices will be forced to come down. Thanks for the comment Shaun 🙏

The resellers I don’t like are the ones who say they will sell you something and you get ready to meet them and then they say “they sold it “ or “decided to keep” when you know they found someone to sell it to for more.

So long story short. I snatched up a lot of 3DO titles from eBay in the early 2000's. Cheap / reasonably priced. Now I'm out of console / PC gaming completely, but I went and checked locally and online out of curiosity a few months back. Prices were insane.
I thought it was just because anything vintage / old had become expensive. It never occurred to me that resellers might have something to do with it.

When I used to sell used DVDs and games I always looked at sold listings. The prices for retro games are getting too pricey. Even common games for retro consoles are rising.

It's getting out of hand but like I mentioned some things are coming down. If people would just stop paying retail or higher it would force sellers to lower their prices but I don't see that happening unfortunately

I think the only one that are scumbags are the ones who buy cheap and turn around sell for more than its even pricecharted. Alot of times I find huge lots of stuff and buy cheap but then turned around and still charger under pricecharting if available. Hell, I just sold a coworker a N64 with all the cords and stuff and $40 worth of games for just $70. I mean the real scumbags are the ones who sell crap broken too and way too much
