this was the single most awesome piece of children's television ever made. this program has strengthened my resolve to read folktales to my future children. they'll know all the greats: Svahtohor, Clulichlain, St. George, King Arthur, El Cid.

Thanks a million for putting this up. I was raised on this show. It's a shame they never released it on DVD and don't show it anymore. I would love for my kids to be able to see this some day.

i didn't know anyone else actually watched this show. it is such a integral part of my childhood and family memories, and its neat to see that was the case for so many other people too. "fool of the world and the flying ship" is my family's favorite, i can't even remember not knowing that story.

Wow I almost forgot about this show. I loved it as a kid. I'd Love to see "As Long As He Can Count the Cows" or "the silver cornet". Those were my favorite episodes. Thanks for downloading this one :)

Quality and inventiveness of this caliber would never be entertained in this era of "reality" tv. Which, in all honesty, is popular because its profitable - cheap and fast to make. Fuck consumer culture.

Sooooo Gooooood. If you have more of these around, please post them. WGBH has the series in it's archives, but, as far as I'm aware, has no plans to re-release them. Been looking for these for ages. Thanks!

I wonder if James Earl Jones was chosen to host this show because of his role in "Field of Dreams".

me too, only (retrospectively speaking) I wish the opening sequence had clips from Silver Cornet, or "As Long as He Can Count the Cows" or Frog/Toad, or Bill och Bolla (Bill and Bunny)

"If you listen closely, you can hear the voice of the centuries."
And if we can't hear the voice of the centuries, Mr. Jones reading the phone book will make for an equally epic substitution.

There's a scene in the intro music in which two little mice can be seen (a boy and a girl mouse). What's the title of that film in which they are? A long ago i saw this cartoon but i cannot remember its title. But i know that in that cartoon the boy mouse gets on an island.

'cause some public TV dimwits (Steven Keaton-like moguls) though Barney was a better show.
