This isn't just a review. For those of us that bought this bike and felt like they were going crazy only getting 40 miles out of charge. This video adds sanity to the crazy 200 mile range. 100% agree with everything you said. It's a fun bike, but they need to change their range claims. 15mph = 200miles / 30mph = 60miles / 50mph = 30miles is more realistic.

Also keep in mind that batteries are graded. Like usually vape batteries are like a B+ or abouts. The high grade A+ batteries are usually sent to companies with high end product’s… like a battery pack for a cordless Dyson vacuum or something. Obviously they used high end batteries (and other components) when this ebike broke the world record. But for $6600 is just insane and just using the world record as a cash grab. The one thing I like about this is the bike has good size… I’m 6’3 205/lbs and I’m having a hard time finding a bike that fits my frame

People who have no clue how things work simply hear what the producers of the thing says the thing does. They rely on these producers to inform them, educate them. In a dishonest world, this does not happen.

Guiness, who run the records book, started out in the UK where the legal max speed for an ebike is 15.5mph, the same speed as the entirety of Europe (25kmh). So a speed based on the maximum legal for a vehicle to be classed as EPAC (the ebike class, rather than the moped class) is entirely fair and reasonable. Under the classification of the country where they are based, and all of Europe, a vehicle is only truly an ebike if it has a max motor power of 250w, has no throttle that eliminates the need for pedalling to reach speed, and has a max speed of 25kmh / 15.5mph. Anything above that is a electric moped, or electric motorcycle not an ebike.
Many states in the US have a legal speed limit of 20mph for an ebike to not need a moped/motorcycle license and registration, tax and vehicle insurance.

I'm skeptical that they even got 200 miles at 15mph if it only gets 40 miles at 30 to 50 mph, only way I can think is maybe they used non standard wheels / tyres, indoors therefore no wind, temperature at 25C. Super smooth surface, I know they used a velodrome.

    • @fnorgen
      @fnorgen 2 роки тому +2

@@ash0787 I don't think you appreciate just how much of a brick wall air resistance really is. The aerodynamic drag force increases with the square of the velocity, so if you double your speed you will burn 4 times the energy to push air over the same distance. So getting a little over 4 times the range at 15mph vs 30-50mph is perfectly reasonable.
Not that it really matters though. Any decent cyclist could comfortably maintain such a relaxed speed on flat terrain all day with no electric assist. Range estimates for e-bikes just gets really dumb since real world results are extremely influenced by local conditions and riding styles.

Hi Inja! Excited that you dig the power and throttle on the Top 3.0 bike, and it brought you so much fun!
In regard to your comments on range, you are correct in that different riding and driving conditions effect ebike range.
The 200-mile range claim was proven in 2017 by Delfast’s achievement of the World Guinness Record. This past June 2022, we decided to retest the bike and (in ideal conditions) and reached 232 miles on a single charge.
Our record-breaking range performance of 200 miles was set under optimum conditions: temperature was 77 degrees Fahrenheit, on a smooth track, with an experienced rider focused on keeping the speed and pedal ratio in balance for maximum range.
No doubt, that range of an e-bike in everyday use is not about ideal conditions, since it can be affected by several factors. Battery capacity, power output, speed of travel, weight of cargo, amount of pedal assist used, incline or decline, conditions and type of terrain, as well as temperature and other weather-related factors. All of these literally affect the e-bike performance in that or another way. And let's not forget each e-bike owner's personal riding style.
Sometimes people accelerate their bikes in such a way, that a few minutes later only half of the battery is left :)
To answer all the questions regarding range, we’ve put some educational information about it on Delfast’s website: us.delfastbikes.com/delfast-is-the-worlds-longest-range-ebike.
Also, we are available 24/7 at bikes@delfastbikes.com or 925.384.2010 and we will gladly share all the details about e-bike performance to help you and all riders figure out how to maximize their bike range.

As a lot said, appreciate the real world ride review, makes sense given the size battery the Delfast has (If I remember it was a 72V 20amp hour). I went with a Huck Stinger3000 at $6k, at the time it was the biggest battery I saw (72V 50amp hour) I got almost 80 miles on it when I "Real world tested it mix between road and bike lanes" which was a blast, but those last 15 miles was on low battery the whole time giving me range anxiety but still went strong and pushing 45mph at the last 5 miles. Now I saw online custom batteries for it (72V 75amp hour). My hope is they develop a better battery/power source sometime in my prime time. These bikes are a real blast, but damn they are expensive, but I'm really thankful I was able to get one and enjoy it for a 50 mile run every once in awhile because I have family and job that occupies most of my day so to squeeze out 2 hours of open road what else can a guy ask for.

I mean it does take a lot more energy to go faster. I have a Tesla P85 from 2013. I have only really range tested it in the cold and there's a big difference between going say 55 and 70. At a steady cruise doing 55 over the course of 15 miles I averaged about 3.8 miles per kilowatt. If I could keep that up that would be 292 mi which would be above the normal standard range. I did do it with the heat and seat heater off just to maximize it, but even with them I get about 3.2 mi per kilowatt which would have still been 246 mi range. If I bump my speed up to 70 and cruise at that I lose 25%+ of my range. I go from 3.8 kilowatts to 2.8 with no AC or heat and probably 2.3 with. That means at 70 I can go between 177 to 215 miles. I even did a trip recently where I drove 150 miles at 70 throughout in 25° weather with the heater on at 78°. I left with 100% and 150 miles later I was at like 12% at my destination and had to charge.
I do agree that all ranges even for cars should be done a different speeds. I believe Tesla tests theirs at 55 or 60 miles an hour to get their range. The EPA does it slightly differently and so does the European group. But I would love it if Tesla would step up and do speed testing at say 35, 45, 55, 65, 75, and published those results. Because I know at like 35 I can get over 4 miles per kilowatt at a steady state.
Also I think the battery is in a lot of these things should either be bigger to maximize capacity or in this example where they had a 200 mile range I think they should get rid of the battery and have a super capacitor option. If you can get like 40 mi range with a super capacitor everybody would be fine with that. Because they can get to where they are going plug it up and charge it as quick as possible.

I have an electric bike not nearly as powerful as that one. Mine does as advertised if you read between lines of said advertised range. I live in a lot hills and 15 miles from work and ride to work at least 3 times a week. Between line advertising, 30 mile round trip I get home with little under half of the battery left sometimes less, using psa and me pedaling the whole way. My bike claims 60 mile range. So I can see 60 miles plus if like you said if I kept it at 15mph or less. Using throttle only which I've never done would not give me much range at all.

    • @MrMduchesne23

THIS RIGHT HERE! 15mph while pedalling! it's an e-bike, not a motorcycle! why would you expect to go 200 miles on battery only when pedals have been provided and need to be used in the city/street settings?
The complaints on here remind me of when people bought plug-in hybrid cars and complained about the poor fuel economy....as it turned out 90% of them never plugged the cars in so they were running on the gasoline motor 100% of the time instead of electricity for the 1st 100km.

Honest review. Better to find a good ebike builder in your area and have one built to suit your needs. I build powerful lite ebikes. Weight is the key and amp hours capacity. High power bikes in Los Angeles California builds some great ones. I’m 170 lbs but most Americans are 200 plus. That will greatly affect your range. Ebike technology needs to evolve with some new more efficient battery management and drive motors. But we’re getting there very slowly. Maybe the gas price crisis will pump some capital into that.

Complete disappointment in the manufacturer's range quote. You are right, range specifications should be done at every 10 miles increment (10mph, 20mph, 30mph, 40mph, etc., then top speed range). But Delfast, unlike all other e-bike manufacturers, did get right what most consumers want, that long range capability and the belt drive. Now they just need to convince BYD to sell them their Blade battery so the e-bike can be charged on the road at an auto charger. This way we can use the e-bike for cross-country bikepacking. Imagine not having to bust your ass going against the wind or uphill on a bikepacking trip. Or not needing to use your car everywhere you go.

The reality though is typically the average commuter is only going to be traveling through the city and in most all city's the speed limit set's around 20 MPH in the the city street's so going 25 MPH like most E-bikes is realistically all you need. Pushing to 28/ 30 MPH is only concievable on roads that would allow for it but anyone getting an E bike probably only needs 25 miles one way max and 25 back and that would be for things like work are the rare occasion where you need it to visit a friend but even then I doubt most will travel 20 miles even. If this bike was 4 grand it would be a hell of a deal.

You will break the rear axel like I broke mine and you'll have to replace the motor stator just like I had to replace mine. It's a major pain in the ass so you definitely want to put Loctite on those two rear bolts that hold in the rear axle. Another issue is every time your rear fender goes backwards it's hitting the major cable that's coming out of the motor if that motor cable gets cut you are screwed. I just noticed it at the end of your video when accelerated your rear fender went back so you definitely want to take care of that right away and probably avoid any jumps even small jumps off of curb this bike is not meant for that
