    Before I could buy products like conditioners for my hair, the only way for me to moisturise my hair was with water and shea butter. I would apply water to my hair then coat in an oil. And it worked! Of course my hair stays moisturised for longer now that I have conditioners with humectant and stuff. But the basic principle of water and something to retain the moisture, works.

    Do the ends of our hair lose more moisture? Just curious. Also, I've noticed that increasing my water intake has helped with any scalp or dryness issues. Lastly, your hair has gotten so long! I have fine, natural hair so i'm wondering if I should get trims more often than the standard because 4 months later, I'm still at the same length after a recent salon visit.

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  2 роки тому +12

      The ends of our hair do lose more moisture. They are the oldest parts of our hair and are generally more porous than the rest of the hair strands. Hydration is both and internal and external process so drinking adequate amounts of water is definitely important. As for trimming your hair, that should totally depend on the state of your ends. If they are healthy and you aren't experiencing excessive breaking, knots or tangles then there's no need to trim more often. Thanks for watching.

    I can't spray my hair with water then add product on top. It will dry out and break (trust me I've tried LOC/LCO method). If I let my hair dry after washing then add a leave in, gel or hair grease neat on rotation my hair is fine. I've been doing this for approximately 5 months now and my hair is thriving. No more direct water for me until wash day lol.

    Per a chemist I listened to recently, 'conditioned' and 'moisturized' are synonyms. So your hair is not stiff when it's conditioned, is the same as saying your hair is not stiff when it's moisturized. Conditioners are moisturizers, etc. My favorite way to condition my hair is water and sealing with shea butter. It makes a lovely fluffy twist out as well.

    Hi and thank you for the video. I always love watching them. For this topic I think most of us are misleading. Comparing sponge could be a good example but hair does not behave like a sponge, does not behave with water the exact same way a sponge does. How long can our hair retain water that has been added manually? Is it even a good thing to try to make our hair retain water... when hair naturally has a minimum-maximum water content in a healty state of (7-15%) depending on the humidity in the air. Many brands or people like to compare moisturizing skin with moisturizing hair when talking or using humectants who have been tested on skin not hair. But again hair and skin do not behave the same. And even if we take that example. How long does our skin stays moisturized? 10/20 hour max? Even if you don't wash your face you feel the need to re-moisturize within 10/15 hours. So unless you moisturize your hair morning and night... Is trying to retain/trap water long term even possible? How long? And is it even so important?
    I see the positive part of moisturizing/hydrating to help me manipulate, comb, style, re-shape, my afro hair easily and without breakage... In that sense I think water/ hydration/ moisture is important four our afro hair but not to try to trap water long term. But oils, butter and/or conditioning ingredients (btms, behentrimonium chloride, some polyquaternium, some silicones...) that we find in every conditioners/ masks/ moisturizers are what helps me long term to maintain healthy hair less susceptible to breakage by keeping my cuticles flat, lubricated, and in order just like sebum does.
    We keep saying we need to trap water. But for what purpose? Do we lack water or do we lack sebum?
    With humectants or not our hair moisture content is really dependant on the humidity content in the air but it does not prevent black women who live in dry area to maintain healthy hair too. To me focusing on moisturising our hair long term/ trying to trap water in our hair long term, trying to chase long term moisture is pointless and time consuming.
    So I prefer focusing on other areas when it comes to maintaining healthy hair. Moisture !!!! was a goal of mine when I went back natural by following what I saw online. Until my mum asked me why I kepy adding moisture so often.... She made me realize that as a child and a teenager she never did that to my natural hair and it was super healthy and long too. She used moisture just like I use it now which makes my life much more simple with the same result. I do everything on wash day and don't add anything unless I need to re-shape , re-style. Of course I also wash my hair on a regular basis.

      Can you please give your routine or something?

    • @HereDiianas
      @HereDiianas 2 роки тому +1

      @@harleyqueeen Hi I have a very similar simple routine to UA-camr Tiajonay. Look her up. I also make videos but mainly about beauty/skincare and healthy lifestyle in general. So for my routine; it is wash, deep condition, put my hair in a few braids when it is still wet to stretch it. I always twist the end so it's easy to unravel. When it is slightly damped I undo the braids to apply an oil/butter mix on the strands then redo the braids so they get more stretch andand smoother. The next morning I remove the braid and put my hair in a loose bun usually. I sleep on a silk pillow case but don't do anything special to my hair during the work week usually. I just adjust my loose bun in the morning and add water/oils/butter on the edges as needed. On the weekend I'll just redo the braids on Sunday and unravel them Monday morning to get the hair stretch again for the next week in a bun. Usually I don't need to add more/butter oils or just a little bit when I redo the process. But I add a little bit of aloe juice with a spray bottle to help manipulate my hair and finger detangle at the same time while redoing the braids.
      So on the next wash day my hair is not that tangle. So I usually have my wash day every 2 weeks. If I am lazy every 3 weeks. Sometimes I might choose to wear my hair out in braid out for a few days. I usually do that close to my wash day. Also sometimes I do mini twists (2/3 weeks) or box braids (4/5weeks) Before styling I use the same technique to stretch my hair so it's easier and faster to part and style hair.
      Also I only comb/detangle with a wide tooth comb in section on wash day before applying the shampoo under hot running water as it helps the comb glides easily with bigger sections.
      Seems complicated when I write it down but it's not when you do it I promise. It's just little tips that make the entire process easier.
      Hope it helps.

When I do remoisturize and lock it with oil, my hair feels hard and stiff, makes noise, and if I touch my hair or try to separate my clumps, I get mad frizz... and my hair is too greasy, but HARD). I wash every 4 days. Deep condition weekly with heat. Protein treatments every 4-6 weeks. Am I doing something wrong? I've never taken care of my natural hair before and I'm 62. I'm 15+ years chemical free and stopped using hot combs and flat irons in May 2021. Thank you for this content. I just want to be able to keep my hair moisturized. I made it halfway to mid back length but never mastered the moisturizing aspect. I don't know what products my hair like and what oils work best for me. I have almond,grapeseed,olive oil and this oil mixture from Naturallclub. Coconut oil dries my hair instantly so does my 5 month old baby’s hair.
    Edit: My ends weren’t bad,when I went to get a trim before cutting my hair,I retained a lot of length. My hair was past my collar bone. I recently cut my hair due to the stylist giving me heat damaged so I’m back to twa. I don't really mind because I can start my journey on a fresh start doing it right this time once I DO figure it out lol

    I love that you break down the science of our hair & show us how to utilize methods for our specific hair types on top of that. It's rare to see anyone pull out scientific facts when talking about natural hair & it just doesn't make sense to follow a tutorial when you don't even understand the biology of your own hair. So thank you thank you thank you. More influencers should do research like this before making videos saying what will & won't work.

    Thank you for this video it was just in time. I started my locs recently and wanted to moisturize my hair. However I noticed it kept getting dry. The only thing I was doing was spraying it with my rose water and aloe juice mixture, I did not necessarily add oils on top of it. So now that I know that I need to do that I think my hair should feel a lot better. Thank you for the advice! Have loved your channel for years 💚

      If you can you should also look into getting the pH Stabilizing Spritz. It helps your hair stay moisturized for longer. It’s most beneficial for people with Locs

      Whenever I first discovered Green Beauty I was so fascinated that I binge watched a lot of her past videos. I got caught up and gained so much knowledge. She was the one who helped me finally figure out my hair porosity. Once I knew that, it was so much easier figuring out the store bought products that work for my hair and the best ingredients for my DIY creations. She's a gem 💎 and a Blessing. 😇

I would moisturize with the loc method but something changed and my hair just wouldn't absorb well anymore. Literally the next day my hair was all dry again and if I tried adding more moisturizers my scalp would be overwhelmed and I had to wash it out

    If oils/butters seal water in, how do humectants pull water from the air into you hair if there’s a coating?

    • @bdh711
      @bdh711 2 роки тому +1

      It’s a slow process, just like how after some time the hair with oil on it will eventually end up dry

    • @ctay4sho09
      @ctay4sho09 2 роки тому +2

      Everything that is described is being done on a molecular level. We see our hair as a whole, but consider each individual hair strand. We can’t see how it absorbs moisture on that level. Our hair moves. As it does so, the cuticle layer moves. Acting against the environment. We can’t see the moisture evaporate. We just know it has when our hair feels dry as a whole.

    • @tmcknight1035
      @tmcknight1035 2 роки тому +7

      Shouldn't be using raw oils and butters in the first place. Hair products with humectants and oils within them will do the trick. No need for that greasy residue that comes with using oil/butters as a sealant.

    I wonder if you could do a video on why aloe vera does NOT agree with some people's hair for moisture. I have H/P fine medium density hair 3/4 ABC and I've tried the A/V, fresh, diluted, mixed with water, olive oil and it just makes my hair feel really hard and crispy! I had to D/C the next day as it was causing my hair to break off.
    It seems to be a favourite for a lot of Naturals - But not me. It would be good to know the science behind it
    Thanks in advance...Julia

    Shampooing your hair brings water in, condition er closes the hair cuticle and seals the water in, putting oil on your hair lubricates it , oil doesn't add or "seal in" moisture lol

      @Halima’s World It (clove) is but what do u do about the smell? I infused avocado oil w/ cloves 4 a while. My hair loved it. My stylist kept asking me about the smell. My positive results helped me 2 ignore her until…I noticed! It (clove) does have a…less than floral aroma. I tried lavender and that made it more like a used bathroom 😂 . Now when I use clove, it’s in a prewash mixture. My hair is relaxed and longer than it has ever been. I anticipate it hitting my bra strap by Summer if I drink more water and moisturize more consistently! I saw this latest Greene Beauty video as subscriber who shares the link as often as I can!

I've seen a few videos about how hyaluronic acid is very helpful for moisture, since it holds x1,000 its weight in water ( I personally use it for my eczema and my lips 'cause winter always hits me hard). My question is have you tried hyaluronic acid for your hair? If yes, does it work well? I’m curious to know if one day it will be discuss on this channel. Peace & love 💕
