  • Fly fishing one of NC's best trout fisheries....
    The Nantahala River cuts through the far reaches of Western NC in an ancient valley known as the "land of the noon-day sun". The slab crew made the trek out west to fly fish for beautiful Nantahala trout, catching all three local variants: brook, brown, and rainbow. Plus, CJ runs into a rare, river-going creature!
    Part 2: • Western North Carolina...

    Nice stream and fish although stockies. Fishing soft plastics isn’t really fly fishing. You could tie some San Juan worm patterns.

      Yea definitely, we actually threw some San Juan worms a bit but nothing was getting the reaction like those Berkley minnows. Appreciate the advice, we are learning more and more about the fly world!

      Ehhh we’re splitting hairs here. I use several different plastic items to tie flies. San Juan worm material is synthetic, it’s just not soft plastic.

    I got to fish there last year with my brothers for the first time and I absolutely love it, we had such a great time. Although we didn’t hook into any studs like the one y’all got, we did catch and release quite a few average size trout. I’m finally going to take the leap and move north so I’m definitely looking forward to learning more about trout fishing and getting back on some of those streams. Awesome video brother, looking forward to checking out part two and tight lines y’all.

    Just a heads up, great video but the use of the power bait is illegal during delayed harvest season, artificial fly or lure single hook non scented plastics power bait does have a scent to it, just a heads up in case you’re back out there during delayed harvest. Game wardens rarely check but if they do happen to pass by they do fine people pretty high prices for offenses, well made video though and definitely a lot of fun out there

    Do you always fly fish with powerbait? I'm mad at myself for never trying this.

    • @SlabDynasty
      @SlabDynasty  4 роки тому +1

      haha, genius right? But typically in the past weve thrown buggers, san juan worms, egg imitations, and various nymphs. We aren't huge fly fishermen, so still learning a lot about the different patterns and hatches!

    • @codyjohnson3587
      @codyjohnson3587 4 роки тому +3

      Fishing with Powerbait in delayed harvest is actually illegal. Artificial bait cannot be scented. I only know this because I had worms like that in my possession and almost ended up with a ticket in delayed harvest water. Just a friendly heads up

    • @SlabDynasty
      @SlabDynasty  4 роки тому +1

      Wow, didn’t know this! We actually fished with a guide here several years ago who used power bait, so this never occurred to us. Thanks for the tip!

      @@SlabDynasty from I think June till October you can use whatever because it switches the hatchery rules. But see when you look it up it just says artificial. But the game warden had another book that had the definition of artificial and it goes into more detail. But those worms are legit

    Nice fish man, when did you start fly fishing? I grew up trout fishing the rivers of the Northeast and New York and then moved to South Carolina. The North Carolina rivers are becoming my new getaway. I noticed you are fishing soft plastics, it does get the job however, flies are very different. Good subsitutes for those plastics could be:
    Fish imitation A.K.A Streamers: - Lefty's Deciever - Wooly Bugge - Zonkers -Muddler Minnow -Gamechanger
    Also catching a fish on a fly you tied is an amazing feeling.
    Tight Lines

      Started going on annual fly trips when we were in middle school, but haven’t really devoted serious time to learning the craft and getting familiar with flies. Lots of great rivers in NC, and great tips on the flies man!

      @@SlabDynasty any time you have any questions feel free to reach out id be happy to answer them. BTW I saw another video of you fishing a dry..... awesome to see man. something I picked up a long time ago while fishing a very technical river was to get up river from the fish and cast at a 45 degree angle off the bank towards the fish, as you go to drop the fly on the water give the rod a wiggle from left to right (look into Arial mends).

    First off, way to handle all of the comments. Putting yourself out there with a video gets a lot of attention, good and bad haha. I tie my own flies and really enjoy the "purity" of fly fishing so I was feeling the same as a lot of people on here but I also love catching fish. So, kudos to you for finding what was working that day. Southeastern fly fishing is kind of a different animal than the rest of the fly fishing country anyway so what the heck. Best of luck in your future outings!

    Sorry but I can’t watch you handle trout the way you are. Always wet your hands before touching them or you’ll damage the proactive membrane and they’ll die of disease. Don’t keep them out of water more than 10 seconds. Keep them in net and lift for the shot but don’t leave them out so long. Looks like your squeezing also. You may do a better job than the video shows but I just can’t support watching when other channels do a better job of protecting the trout for all to enjoy. I hate slamming you on this but I do hope you learn better handling techniques so I can watch another video make.

    • @SlabDynasty

      Hey Jeff, Thank you for the advice. We are definitely still beginners to the fly fishing world and learning new things every trip. We always treat any fish that we don't plan on consuming with care and respect. In this video, we felt like we did a good job keeping the fish wet and not keeping them out of the water for too long, but again, we are still learning and we appreciate your feedback!
