The Lost Vector W8! A 700 Mile American Supercar with an Insane Past - Ep. 11

  • This Lost Vector W8, chassis #017, personally belonged to Vector Aeromotive's founder - Gerald Weigert. When Vector was taken over by Megatech in the early 1990s, this car along with many other assets were seized, as Weigert did not want to relinquish control of his company. At the time, Megatech also owned Lamborghini, which they purchased from Chrysler. Thus, this Vector W8 made it over to Lamborghini USA HQ in Jacksonville at some point after its seizure by Megatech. Eventually, the car ended up in Europe and was titled to Lamborghini USA, after which it traded hands to a private collector. Jerry Weigert had a long existing lawsuit regarding this car, claiming it was his personal property and not that of Vector Aeromotive Corporation. Sadly he passed away in 2021 before the matter could be resolved. However, the owner at the time has settled the case with the family, and the car has now been reunited with its original MSO! Still more details to explore about exactly what happened with this car during it's 25 years of obscurity, but we're happy that it is back out in the light!
In the constant pursuit of pairing the world’s best automobiles with the world’s best collectors, CURATED Miami has specialized in Vintage Blue Chip European Automobiles since 2016 - specifically low production cars built by the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and more. The Vector W8 was hands down THE coolest and wildest car of the time. I remember watching the story play out over many, many years. Jerry was such an interesting guy, similar to Elon Musk today, and you just couldn't help but rooting for him and hoping he would prevail, despite the outrageous odds. Like Carroll Shelby, Jerry painted the same car in different colors to make it appear he had more prototypes built than he actually had, and he probably made more money from renting the car out for advertisements than he did from selling cars. Great video John, you have to have one of the coolest jobs in the world, and keep doing what you do!

Im still searching for any video proof that the car can perform anywhere near their claims, every footage is just a slow ride at most 50 looking. Until it’s proved otherwise these will just be moving art projects. He should have let the testers do it all when the chance was there, instead of permanently getting the reputation as a fake braggart.

what it's going to take is a collector with the balls (and $$$) to take a W8, restore it to and run it flat-out. That's the closest we'll ever get. Using gear ratio and power/weight ratios is just supposition.
Missing facts aside: it was and still is a captivating car. The idea behind it. The design of it... it creates a powerful emotional response in collectors of American muscle...errr now we call them performance cars. @@Journey_Awaits

Thank you so much for documenting the history of this car!
I had a chance to see a Vector W8 in 1990, possibly this very car because it was black on black. They were touring the car around the country to promote it at the time. A high school friend of mine and I found out that it would be at an Acura dealership in my hometown for one evening. We begged our parents to drive us there to go see it. Sitting in the middle of the dealership showroom it looked like a spacecraft.
I was able to sit in the car for a few minutes and I remember the transmission handle on the left side being one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Along with that dash display which looked like 1980s military avionics. There’s a 10 disc cd changer on the passenger side which dates it a little bit. To this day it’s the most amazing automotive experience I’ve ever had. They gave us signed posters for the car with Gerald Wiegert’s signature. I still have it to this day.

I met Gerald at Car's & Coffee in Irvine Ca on several occasions around 2012 to 2014. Back then he would bring either a light purple or a teal green W8 to the show. Gerald was very approachable and would answer any questions regarding his creations. For the most part many at the show didn't know what the Vector was or the history of the car, that's understandable when the best of the best would show up on any given Saturday morning. Gerald and the Vector were both a bit ahead of their time. RIP Gerald RIP...

Those early vectors are the real deal, apparently much better built than the latter, as the focus was on incorporating aeronautical engineering. In the early 1980's, my buddy and I went to the Cow Palace auto show (an annual event for us) and saw a huge crowd around the Lambo's as expected. We went on and saw This badass looking car that neither of us had seen before. No car Car Models and little fanfare, just a dude standing there. I figured it was a kit-car or something, cuz there was no one around. I walked up and asked."what is this thing, it looks awesome". The guy introduced himself and his car, the Vector. The dude gave us a full tour from front to back. I was blown away by the dude's knowledge, he was really kool. He even let me sit in it. .Fully impressed by the fact that every piece of that car was made in America, I shook his hand and thanked him for the tour... Reading a little more on the way out, it dawned on me... "Wait a minute, you're the guy!" This dude was Gerald Weirgart. He was so passionate about this car, we could feel it. He took like, 20 minutes with us (a couple of 20 year old gearheads) just to show us what Vector was all about. He told me that this was his personal car. I have no doubt that the car in this video is the same one. RIP Gerald, a true American visionary...

Between all the great supercars in the museum, it really stuck out. So sad about Jerry Wiegert's passing. At the same time it is great to see that his creations are still out there being treasured and drive. Every time I see a Vector video like this... Just makes me smile. The owners they met said the car was actually quite reliable and they would never let their beloved cars go. I wish some big brand would buy the rights and bring this back into production. May be too late as more countries are hellbent on banning gasoline powered engines just to look politically correct.

We got to go everywhere inside the building, including into the back storage area where there was a white LM002. Just beyond the LM002 was this black Vector W8 and next to it was a semi covered yellow supercar that had the curves of a M12. I've always wondered what car it was and it's clearly that yellow W12 in the video. Interesting that they were in the back and we were kind of not supposed to know about the Vector's being there.

My college roommate had a job at a crash testing lab close to Pomona CA. He spent weeks doing testing on two Vector W8's. At least one concluded with frontal impact with the dummies inside.Everything in the interiors of the cars they did crash testing on was whitewashed to show contact with the dummies. He ended up with the seats after the testing was complete. He promptly installed them in his 1978 Celica. They had specs of the whitewash on them forever, but they were nice. I was waiting for this video ever since John began hinting at it. I actually saw this very car at a Jacksonville Infinity Dealership back in the mid 90s. I found out later about how it was (allegedly) being moved around/hidden between dealerships in the area. It was probably the most surreal automotive experience I've ever had. The car was just sitting there. Nobody around it. Nobody came out while I walked around it and drooled. One of the coolest days. Glad John is going to get it refreshed and off to a good home.

I met Jerry and his stunning Vector car in person many years ago at the 1989 WORLD OF WHEELS SHOW in Miami at the Coconut Grove exhibition center. I have a publication book of exotic cars that featured an array of photos of the infamous Vector W2 which Mr. Wiegert personally autographed for me, that I still have and cherish to this day. I'm lucky to have taken a few photos of the car which could be the "actual personal car" of which he owned that ironically is featured in this video. Wow!!! I also have the VHS cassette tape he was selling at the event that features the Vectors build and features when he exhibited the car. I remember reading of his passing a couple years ago and was saddened greatly of an innovative pioneer of such an exotic car that was way ahead of it's time that put the standard of exotic car construction materials on the map to this day. I miss him to this day. Lamborghini's redesign of Vector M12 are not true to Jerry's design and engineering philosophy. Actually, they are embarrassing. The true Vectors are W-2,W-8, and redesigned Avtech WX-3 and concept roadster twin turbo's. Incredible cars.

Very nice! I had a tech/spec poster of the Vector W8 hanging on my bedroom wall, when I was a teenager, back in the 80's. The Vector poster was right next to the infamous poster of Heather Thomas in a pink bikini. Every male of a certain age knows the poster I am talking about...lol. All of my friends wanted a Lamborghini Countach back then, but I wanted a Vector. 😊

Back in 1992 I spent a couple of days in the company of 3 Vectors.
We were visiting from England, holidaying in California & Nevada and were staying in the Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley. How surprised were we to see three cars all together undergoing heat soak testing (where better than Death Valley).
There was a black one which we only saw for a few seconds, a red W8 and a silver WX3.
John, Vector guy I spoke to used to work for Lola back in the day.
He described the Vector as the only supercar with an airbag - no idea why I remembered that but there you are.
Still have photos to this day including both the red & silver cars parked side by side at Bad Water.

The Vector W8 was a crazy car. From multi-page-spreads in 90s magazines, hailing it as the next killer supercar, to the design and the unconventional ideas involved in its creation. I myself got an invitation from the Auto Technik Museum Sinsheim in Germany when they had a dark blue W8 on exhibit (iirc back then on a UK registration). They offered to open the inside and let me get a close look to take pictures - normally cars in that section of the museum were roped off at that time.
Sadly, when I wanted to go again years later, I learned that it was sold at an auction and iirc now resides in Switzerland.
Years before I actually modeled a W8 for Need For Speed 3 on PC - yes, the passion for this car was running wild.
Crazy to think that at that point these cars were routinely going for around 100.000$ on auctions. Nowadays... I dare not think about what they are worth. And what replacing parts would cost, how would one eve go about replacing a windshield that was custom made for this vehicle?
Cars are made to be driven, and the Vector was made to be driven hard, but you'd be in constant fear of rendering in inoperable.

The Vector W8 is the coolest and most badass car of all time. This is cooler than the DeLorean for me. The style is insane. There's something about over 500 horsepower combined with a 3 speed automatic torque converter transmission AND 2 turbos on top that just makes me absolutely lust after this car. The combination is so 80s and insane. I LOVE this car. I wish I could drive it.

I remember seeing a Vector W8 at an Auto Expo in the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island in the early 90’s. I knew that car was special as a kid. I never realized it was one on 17 worldwide though. Very interesting to hear about the Lamborghini connection. This is among some of the ultra rare cars I was able to experience in person. At 15 years old I was given the opportunity to visit ESPERA Sabarro School of Design in Switzerland for a private after hours tour. Where I saw nearly a dozen BMW M1’s, the ones that were co developed with Lambo before they pulled out of the project with BMW. There were complete M1’s, Procar Competition cars and several bodies in white. Then there were the one off Sbarro concepts like the Monster G, a Kevlar bodied off-roader with Boeing 747 wheels. Or the wedge shaped Challenger. They also had 2 rear engined hot hatches one with a V12 made from 2 - 6cyl motorcycle engines fused together sitting in the trunk area called the Super 12 and a Super 8 with a Ferrari 308 engine. It was an amazing experience!
